Ubuntu :: Chat Notification Bubbles Very Slow ?

May 27, 2011

Chat notifications on Pidgin and Empathy, for when I receive a message from someone while the chat is minimized, are slow. They could say "Hello there" "How was your day?" "For me, it was good" (Three messages in a row). I open my conversation after the last message was sent. I see a bubble that says "How was your day?" then another that says "For me, it was good".. But I already had the Conversation opened.

Ubuntu :: Alternative Apps Using The Mail And Chat Notification Icons?

Dec 19, 2010

I enjoy the convenience and the simplicity of the mail and chat icons in the GNOME notification bar. But I am not sure I like Empathy; and I certainly prefer Thunderbird to Evolution. Can I use the mail icon to launch Thunderbird, and to be notified of new messages from Thunderbird? Likewise, can I use the mail and chat icons to control and to receive notifications from another IM program like Pidgin?

Ubuntu :: R"move" The Chat Button Onto The Notification Bar?

Jul 2, 2010

Because I only use chat (Empathy) and not evolution (I use gmail, I know you can put it into the mail applet but I have a Android (smartphone) and it notifies me there)

So my question would be how do I "move" the Chat button onto the notification bar and out of the mail applet?

Ubuntu :: Click On Notify-OSD Bubbles Doesn't Bring The Related App To Front?

Dec 7, 2010

I was expecting that notify-OSD bubbles behavior to bring the app displaying the notification, when you click on them. But in my case, when the mouse pointer enters the bubble, it fades out a little, and when I click on it, nothing happens.

Is that normal? Why doesn't a click bring the related app to front?

Programming :: IDE Features: Function Declaration In Info Bubbles?

Jun 3, 2009

I can't remember what it's called, but this feature of VC++ basically catalogs all the functions of a project, lets you right click on a function and go directly to it's declaration or definition, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. it also gives you an info bubble of the variable types as you're typing a function's name.

this is a very convenient feature, and I'd like to use it with KDevelop, or really any full C++ IDE for linux. does such a thing exist?

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?

May 3, 2010

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?

Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Ubuntu :: Empathy Group Chat Over MSN?

Oct 14, 2010

After upgrading to 10.10, the newer Empathy (or possibly telepathy-butterfly) doesn't seem to be allowing me to create a group chat over the MSN network.

It has always been a little cumbersome compared to other clients (open a chat window with one participant, select Coversation | Invite Participant, type in their name, add...repeat for each participant). But now the "Invite Participant" menu item is always disabled. I've tried removing/re-adding my account, rebooting, and a few other things, but no dice. Lots of googling doesn't turn up anything current.

Is anyone else having this issue, or is this isolated to my setup somehow?

Ubuntu :: How To Install QuickCam Chat

Sep 28, 2010

I have (finally) been able to install Skype. I have a QuickCam Chat (M/N v-uap42) and I have the installation disk for windows with all the drivers on it. I have converted my machine to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It has an Intel Celeron M processor.

All of the explanations I'm finding are telling me to put stuff in the terminal window with the assumption that I know what they're talking about it. I don't know what a kernel is or does or how to find out which one I have. I don't know what a tar is or does or how to find one. I'm looking for a simple 'for dummies' type of explanation on how I can get my webcam to work. Any suggestions?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Create Video Chat App

Jan 11, 2010

I have been tasked with the job of finding a way to create a video chat application on Linux to use with our health software. We are basically just wanting to add a video / audio component to the system. I have been using Ubuntu a long time and have decided to use it as our platform for the new software. We currently use Emblaze VCON with our software on Windows and I want to eliminate the need for Windows completely. We supply the hardware so if I can get good quality video chat integrated into our software then I am all set.

I have been playing with some apps like vlc, cheese and luvcview. I am quite impressed with the video quality I am getting so I know Linux can give our users a great chat experience. I even tried Skype 2.0 beta and that worked great too.

I see the software working just like Yahoo or MSN does. I provide a list of users and whether they are online and when you double click on their name they get a ring and prompt to accept the incoming call from "Joe". If there is an engine already in place that we are free to use and bundle with our paid product then that would be great. I am really ignorant on GPL licensing so I want to be careful on what we do. Also, I think this method is best for the connection... I like the idea of a server which receives input from all clients and tracks their online status but when you make a call to the other person it communicates p2p style to minimize hops and server load. We will be controlling the firewalls on the hardware but not what this hardware may be behind, ie. Router - so I guess I need something that can tunnel through / around such obstacles.

I would really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction on what I could use to do this and also not have to worry about licensing and Intellectual property violations. Btw, I don't see the need to modify the software if it can handle the p2p chat out of box and do it well. I will write the components to handle online / offline status if the "engine" doesn't handle this.
