I've got a Toshiba Satellite a505s6020 that's been running ubuntu 10.10 flawlessly for some time now. However I've come across something I can't figure out. My laptop has an internal web camera, but I'd like to use the Microsoft HD lifecam here > [URL]. The microsoft usb cam works just fine in skype, and what gets me is the chat rooms "options" let's me select the usb cam, but still runs the internal. Other than disabling the internal? I'm all for disabling the internal if It'll make the USB one work in the chat.
Today I wanted to make my webcam work in a flash chat. I added myself to the video group and added export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so to my ~/.basrc file Then I loggued in again... and the problem is:
If I open a shell and start firefox from there (as a regular user), webcam will work ok. If I start Firefox from the top bar, it will NOT work. I checked preferences and it does not seem to do anything weird anybody has a clue? It seems weird to have that pretty top toolbar and not be able to use it.
I use skype and other video chat rooms like tinychat and have alway notice windows user doing cool webcam effects. I want to know if there was a program in ubuntu that would allow this.

I am on Ubuntu Lucid (updated till date). I am using Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic Recently I am not being able to run Cheese (webcam tool). When run it is crashing. Upon starting it from prompt I noticed the following error : libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits The program 'cheese' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

I checked in Skype and there the webcam is working fine. I tried with Camorama but that always gives an error "Could not connect to /dev/video0, please check connections."

I have a problem making work a webcam. At the begining, after the instalation of 10.04 in a new laptop, the webcam did not work but with a lsusb I see that the webcam was Webcam 5986:0241 acer. I was not able to config neither use the webcam with any application. After lots of test and forums reading I could not do my webcam to work, and now when I do a lsusb my webcam does not appear.
I have a standard Fedora 13 system where it is runnign fine, there it uses the uvcvideo kernel module and gives me a picture in resolution 640x480. Then I have a second system, based on Fedora 8, stripped down to a minimum size (it is working as headless system) and with a self-made kernel 2.6.33.5 that has compiled in i2c-core, v4l1, v4l2 and uvcvideo. There the webcam does not work, as soon as I try to access it with "webcam" of xawtv package I get an error

Beside of that v4l-info tells me, that it can handle a resolution of 176x144 only (instead of 640x480). Beside the difference of the resolution the output of v4l-info is identical on both systems.
I want to use my laptop's built in webcam as remote webcam and I don't want to use FTP and post images to a www and use php script or sth, I want to make it accessed remotely as a fast stream and if there is a way I would like to use it with Windows XP - Microsfot Windows Messenger.

I am having problems with ffmpeg. My goal is to capture a video stream from my webcam and feed that into a webcam-capturing program. But to get that to work, I will need ffmpeg to work. I need the following command to work, but I get an error:

First off, I really like Empathy. I use it to combine my Facebook and Gmail chat contacs. Very cool! 1 problem, I can't login to qq.com chat. Has anyone had success doing this?
I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on a Acer aspire one netbook with built in cam and mic, I am using skype to have Video chat but i only hear static when i did a test to the home computer, I can here voice but they can only hear static from me
Is there any gnome tool out there that will allow admins to talk with logged in users? Without it being amsn, skype, or gtalk... I'm looking for something like the 'talk' command but GUI based.
i got my facebook chat working in empathy, but for some reason i can not add my friends from this protocol into a custom group. I have my gmail contacts in a group, and my aim buddies in a group, allowing them to be minimized, but i cannot get my facebook friends to go into a facebook group for some reason. I can right click the friend, and create a new group called "Facebook", but the friend will not move to the group when i hit close.
I have been using Meebo.com for a long time now and like it but I want to find other chat websites. I don't need the integration with other IM accounts like what meebo has.
After upgrading to 10.10, the newer Empathy (or possibly telepathy-butterfly) doesn't seem to be allowing me to create a group chat over the MSN network.
It has always been a little cumbersome compared to other clients (open a chat window with one participant, select Coversation | Invite Participant, type in their name, add...repeat for each participant). But now the "Invite Participant" menu item is always disabled. I've tried removing/re-adding my account, rebooting, and a few other things, but no dice. Lots of googling doesn't turn up anything current.
Is anyone else having this issue, or is this isolated to my setup somehow?
I have got facebook chat to work in pidgin but I am having problems connecting it. When I first open pidgin it gives me an error it says at the bottom "You require encryption, but it is not available on this server." if I keep clicking on reconnect it will usually connect me at some point but it can take a long time I'm wondering on how to fix this. So that it will connect automatically
