Ubuntu :: Empathy Slow To Open Chat Window?
Apr 26, 2011
I'm currently using Ubuntu Natty and have noticed a severe lag - sometimes upwards of 30 seconds - when opening a conversation window in Empathy. Is there anything that I could do to speed it up a bit?
Computer Specs AMD Athlon 64x2 3800+ (2.4 GHz)2GB (512MB x4) DDR-400 (PC3200) nVidia GeForce 7600 GT KO (PCI-express; restricted drivers)

Is there any command that would start a new conversation with a certain "friend" in empathy's list?

I get a problem when I try to connect to jabber chatroom. I tried to join a chat room in the following way: "Buddies > Add chat...", set the name of existing room (it exactly exists), server and group to what I want to add new chat in my contact list. The room isn't protected by password, therefore I didn't set password. New contact was added to my contact list. But when I try to open chat's window by doubleclick on this contact nothing happens. I also don't watch any error messages in pidgin's debug window while I'm trying to open chat window. Attempt to click on "Join" in contact's context menu or join a chat by "Buddies > Join a chat room..." also don't yield results. I use pidgin v.2.6.1 on Slackware 12.2. What's wrong?

The title practically says it all, I'm using 9.10 Ubuntu fyi, when someone messages me in empathy, there is a pop-up top-left that says "so and so says xyz" but sometimes when I'm not looking, this may come up and only when I click on the mail icon I realise someone was trying to talk to me.

i got my facebook chat working in empathy, but for some reason i can not add my friends from this protocol into a custom group. I have my gmail contacts in a group, and my aim buddies in a group, allowing them to be minimized, but i cannot get my facebook friends to go into a facebook group for some reason. I can right click the friend, and create a new group called "Facebook", but the friend will not move to the group when i hit close.

After upgrading to 10.10, the newer Empathy (or possibly telepathy-butterfly) doesn't seem to be allowing me to create a group chat over the MSN network.
It has always been a little cumbersome compared to other clients (open a chat window with one participant, select Coversation | Invite Participant, type in their name, add...repeat for each participant). But now the "Invite Participant" menu item is always disabled. I've tried removing/re-adding my account, rebooting, and a few other things, but no dice. Lots of googling doesn't turn up anything current.
Is anyone else having this issue, or is this isolated to my setup somehow?

I like Empathy, but when I quit the program the chat-bubble in the top-right corner (on the indicator/logout applet) stays. Is this a bug, or is there a way to fix this?

I'm an Ubuntu user and I always chat on Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk and Facebook accounts using Empathy (with the fact that there is no better alternative; pidgin is heavy for me). I have noticed long earlier that all the chat histories are saved. However, just today I discovered that I couldn't delete those histories. Hitting the clear option from the right click fly out menu doesn't permanently remove the history. I can see them again when I try to look for previous conversations.
I believe there is a way to permanently remove chat histories from Empathy.

When an msn contact pastes a multiple line piece of text(couple of lines or more) into their client and sends it, the message fails to display in my empathy chat window. If the window is not focused there is a notification for the message, consisting of '...' in the notification bubble, but no text appears in the window. The same thing happens(or rather doesn't happen) if the window is focused but without the notification.
However, if I look in the chat history for that conversation the pasted text shows up where it should. I noticed this 'problem' in Empathy in karmic previously, so I'm not sure whether it is a bug or a feature, which is why I ask here rather than making a bug report. Using Lucid updated earlier today. This doesn't happen in pidgin, and it's quite annoying, but I would like to keep using empathy.

In Fedora 13, Empathy 2.30.1-2 doesn't connect to Facebook Chat, giving just "Network error". Of course, I know that user must set his username in Facebook.

1. My status selection has disappeared from the contacts menu (See #1 on picture). This lead me to a desperate search on how to delete/reset any config files for empathy. Tried to complete-remove and then reinstall it. This though didn't remove the settings or repair the glitch but instead led me to my second problem.
2. After reinstallation, this redundant little notification icon appeared (See #2 on picture). Cute... now how do i get rid of it? how to reset any empathy settings (problem one would at least solve then... I would presumably think?

Set aMSN to chat account in main menu instead of empathy.
Is it possible? To integrate aMSN into the key communication menu that is. aMSN is superior to empathy for one clear reason, file transfers work!

I've got a problem occurring with my openSUSE 11.3 // GNOME Empathy Chat Client. When I try to connect to my Facebook account, my client tells me that I have a Network Error. Last time I used the client at home, it worked perfectly fine, but when I'm at work it doesn't.
Now, you guys may say that my work's network may have ports blocked, or the firewall is blocking its use in some way, but I find that hard to believe. My reasoning? I am able to connect to my Facebook account thru Empathy at work on my previous Ubuntu 10.04 system with no problems. I have also been connected to the same chat accounts this whole week on my openSUSE 11.3 // KDE 4.4 Kopete chat client. My Empathy connects to my Skype with no problem also. So, do any of you have any ideas that could possibly solve my issue? I love being connected to my Facebook chat at work because I don't see anyone nearly as often, and it's a great way for me to keep in touch with them.

Chat notifications on Pidgin and Empathy, for when I receive a message from someone while the chat is minimized, are slow. They could say "Hello there" "How was your day?" "For me, it was good" (Three messages in a row). I open my conversation after the last message was sent. I see a bubble that says "How was your day?" then another that says "For me, it was good".. But I already had the Conversation opened.

I like the bubble notifications when someone sends me a message.. but they're so slow. If someone sends me a lot of messages in one minute, they'll take a few minutes for a bubble with each message to popup.. and there's no way to close it and tell it to shut up..Is there anything I can do about this?

Sometimes when I start empathy the menu is missing. I've had globalmenu installed but I've removed it and set it so that the menu is showing in the window anyway. But that might still be causing problems--I don't know. Is anyone else witnessing this behavior?I notice that hen I open programs in a terminal I get the msg:Code:Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "globalmenu-gnome": libglobalmenu-gnome.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directoryIf it were a bug globalmenu caused, I find it odd that the problem has only occurred with Empathy.

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
