Ubuntu :: Change Key Mapping In 9.10?

Jan 17, 2010

I have found that the <Enter> key on the numeric keypad does not act the same as the <Enter> key on the main keyboard. Confirming a file copy in Gnome Commander for example. Using xev I found the following

Quote:

Main <Enter>
------------
KeyPress event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x5600002,
root 0x25d, subw 0x5600003, time 44244330, (50,55), root799,113),

[code]....

So based on some research it seems I should be able to edit my ~/.Xmodmap to assign the same key (Return) to keycode 104 - the keypad <Enter> key. Except - I have no .Xmodmap. Did it move in Ubuntu 9.10? Do I have to create it? or does Ubuntu 9.10 use a "better" method of handling key mappings?

Ubuntu :: How To Change Key-mapping For Apple Keyboard

Jul 21, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.04 (Netbook Remix) installed on Asus EeePC 1000. Sometimes I use Apple Wired Aluminum keyboard for comfortable typing. There is no problem for me with netbook's keyboard, but i want to change the keys for the Apple one. For example: make F1-F12 keys really work like F-keys, not control keys; make Fn key to work like Insert key, and swap Cmd/Alt keys.

So, the main question - is it possible to change the layout of apple keyboard without changing the behavior of netbook keyboard? If not, then maybe there are some "switchers" that can constantly change mappings from one to another and back? And, at last, if there is no such tools, then what is the easiest way to do it manually?

Ubuntu :: Buttons References - Use The <Super>ButtonX (<Super>Button1 For The Enabled Compiz Screenshot Plugin)?

Jun 5, 2011

how to use the <Super>ButtonX (<Super>Button1 for example for the enabled Compiz Screenshot plugin)? I also notice there is configurable buttons 1 throught 20 under the various options. At first I thought the ButtonX was a mouse button. Maybe it is with some anticipation of there being eventually being a possible 20 buttons on the mouse. I know the Super key is the Key with the Windows logo on it. But I don't know what to do to get the needed Super Key / Button combination. After having enabled Compiz's Screenshot plugin by its default, I don't get an image after hitting any of the Super key and mouse button combinations. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

CentOS 5 :: Change Keyboard Mapping On Login Screen?

Mar 4, 2009

I just installed Centos 5.2 with a netinstall usb key. I had no Belgium keyboard mapping available during installation, so I chose a fr-latin1 layout. Now this is the default keyboard mapping for the gnome login screen, and for every new user on the system. How can I change this to a Belgium keyboard layout? I can change it for myself within my gnome session in Preferences>Keyboard, but I haven't found how to change the "global" or default setting.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get Sound From M-Audio Firewire Solo (using FFADO And JACK)?

Jul 20, 2010

I'm a complete Linux newbie - only installed it yesterday, and have spent hours trying to get my M-Audio Firewire Solo sound card to work. I can hear nothing at all. I know nothing of Linux, but am willing to learn. While I learn though, it would be nice to listen to a little Hall & Oates. I've got to the stage where the error messages I'm receiving don't bring up any results on Google. Here's what things look like (watch out, big pic):

Those sample rate errors appear in the terminal when I start ffado-mixer. I'm running JACK with everything set as I think it's supposed to be, except that 'Realtime' is unchecked.If I start JACK running with 'Realtime' checked, it tries to launch and fails, saying "JACK is running in realtime mode, but you are not allowed to use realtime scheduling. After applying these changes, please re-login in order for them to take effect". I don't know what more it wants me to do - i've already added

@audio  rtprio 100
@audio - nice -10
@audio  memlock unlimited

to /etc/security/limits.conf, and selected the 2.6.31-11-rt kernel on GRUB bootup. I'm a member of 'audio' and 'disk' groups like'm supposed to be. Have I not got the connections right in JACK? Have I got some sample rate settings wrong somewhere?I'm not even bothered about low latency with the realtime kernel right now, I just want to hear some sound

Debian Installation :: Gateway Solo 5300 Freezes At Install?

Apr 12, 2010

how something doesn't work. Just so I feel better (and hopefully you too), I <3 you Debian. You've worked wonderfully on many projects and experiments before. Here we go.

Gateway Solo 5300
Intel Mobile Pentium IIIe 900MHz
256MB PC100 SDRAM
Random 10GB 2.5" IDE drive (currently contains WinXP Pro)

For the very short time I could boot off the Debian 5.04 i386 CD, I'd choose the default settings to boot to the installer only to have it freeze about 3-4 seconds in. I tried a few of the compatibility options, but I can't remember which. I set up a quick and dirty PXE server using tftp32 on a Windows machine and used it to successfully boot to the Debian installer from PXE only to have it freeze in the same spot. I'm now running the installer using whatever was included on the Debian CD to modify Windows XP's boot.ini to load grub and (inherently the installer) and it is again freezing in the same spot. Ubuntu does roughly the same thing, but only gives me a blank screen.

I'm fairly skilled with Windows (been using since Win 3.1 and 6-8 years old) in the command line and graphical environment and I know enough Linux to make me accidentally type "ls" instead of "dir" when I'm in Windows' command prompt and enough to get around in terminal (apt-get, more/less, grep, pipes, make, etc). I'm sure Debian will make better use of my rather limited 900MHz proc. I'll do my best to understand the technical jargon.

The installer only manages to get to about here: (I get to type this out manually. Ignoring timestamps. Bear with me.)

Freeing initrd memory: 11977k freed
Simple Boot Flag at 0x36 set to 0x1
audit: initializing netlink socket (disabled)
type=2000 audit(1271025644.848:1): initialized

[Code]....

Googling the last few lines suggests the problem is with USB. There is no option to disable the onboard USB controller and additionally, there is no option to boot from USB. Thinking the problem might be IRQ conflicts, I've disabled the Serial and Parallel port from the BIOS in a desperate attempt to free up IRQs slightly. The CD-ROM drive can be removed and swapped with a floppy drive or extra battery. I've removed as many devices as I can, the full list of which is just the CD-ROM and PCMCIA wireless card.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't See Icons After Installing 11.1 On Gatweay Solo 1450

Mar 28, 2011

I've used Ubuntu, but haven't done anything fancy with it. I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on an old Gateway Solo 1450. It works great in Failsafe mode. When I try a normal boot, I get my background with a beautiful resolution, one or two of the icons in the lower right corner appear and that's it. Nothing else shows up on the screen!

These are my machine's specs:

1.2 Ghz. Celeron CPU
128 Kb. cache
256 MB RAM PC-133 (why I went with an older version of OpenSUSE)
10 Gb. Hard Disk
Intel 830-MG chipset
Phoenix Bios
Intel 4X AGP Graphics core

Jul 23, 2010

web browsing is going SUPER slow in my samsung N150 netbook with dual boot(win7/ubuntu10.04). Windows counterpart working flawlessly.

Into the details:

The problem is, i go into a website and it seems to renderize by chunks, ie i enter my favorite PC hardware forum and it is like this when loading: Processors...1sec....Vid cards....1sec...Memory...and on and on until the bottom of the page is reached. The normal behavior is: Click...forum loaded ,as on windows.

By default i use my wireless conection, but also tried wired one to no avail. Also tried it from the live cd and i have the same problem. Some sitess like google, gmail and ..... load normally(instantly). I've tried disabling ipv6 as adviced in several parts and had no results. I used the default firefox 3.6.6, firefox 3.6.7 and chrome with the same results.

Ubuntu :: How To Use Super Key As Standalone Button And Modifier

Nov 21, 2010

Predefinations: From here on in, I will refer to the "Windows Key" on the keyboard as the "Super Key" (Linux terminology)

Consider a user's experience in Windows:
* UseCaseA: Accessing the start menu --> "Super Key" open the menu.
* UseCaseB: Open the "run dialogue" --> "Super Key" + R
* UseCaseC: Open win explorer --> "Super Key" + E
* etc.

In GNOME/ubuntu however, apparently there is this odd limitation in that the "Super Key" cannot be both a standalone key, and a modifier key. Is it still the case? Currently running Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. Apparently in KDE this works, and in Windows it's worked since Windows95. How can we achieve this functionality in Ubuntu/gnome?

I dismayed to find that Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 no longer allows a user to assign the Super key (Windows key/Mod4 key) to keyboard shortcuts.

There seem to have been a number of unfavourable changes to UNR 10.10, but this is the worst. Super key functioning is essential for launching applications for many users.

I am no longer able to use UNR and I must uninstall it today. I think this is a shame, because I have always wanted to support it.
