I cannot log in into Ubuntu anymore. I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed. My log in setting was 'automatically log in'. Later I upgraded to 10.10. When I changed the password settings to 'Show the screen for choosing who will log in' I cannot log in anymore. When I restart the laptop I see a screen with my name. When I click on it I hear a short sound and cannot enter a password. I made a short video of the log in procedure: [URL] When I go to System->Administration->Login Screen I cannot 'Unlock'. So I cannot change the setting back to Automatically login.
The way I log in into GUI is to:
- go into recovery mode
- log in as root
- log in as myself
- start 'startx'
Since yesterday, Ubuntu boots into X-Windows. The violett background is there and also the mouse cursor. However, there is no login window, anymore. There is no possibility to login.I already tried something, but so far I was not succesful. I reinstalled plymouth, ureadahead and gdm. There could be a reason why my system does not work anymore. Yesterday, my root directory filled up to only 50MB free space. Now there is again 5GB.
sorry, I don´t know abt systemsoftware at all. My neighbour that installed the pc here, has moved away abt a year ago. I cannot login in ebay anymore. I can get the lists, but as I need to login, for buying of checking my messages, it starts connecting, but than ´hangs´ and does not come any further. I found a tip, to upgrade the browser, but HOW ?
I mostly use iceweasel, but chrome and conquerer do the same
Just before Lucid was released, I installed karmic on a vanilla VM in 64-bit mode, and all was good. Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?
I've been using ubuntu for months now and it was really frustrating dealing with hardware issues. Just when I thought everything's going ok, today, when I boot up, I am greeted by the following error: "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly, you will need to configure these yourself."
Selecting "run in low graphics mode for one session" doesn't work. It looks like it's loading something but nothing. I tried various options like "reconfigure X" and none of them works. I can login the console find though. I have a backup from a month ago but I've changed a lot since then.
I was trying to install PlayOnLinux but it froze at about 85% after it downloaded via the Software Center. So I had to shut the Software Center. The PlayOnLinux did install despite the fact it froze at 85%. I can't install any more stuff bec the Software Center seems opened all time some how and I get the "You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software." error.I tried the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" command it gives me this, looks like it's stuck at some connection. I'm pretty new to Linux.

I have ubuntu 10.04 and lost the ability to use synaptech package manager. I was able to use it yesterday and everything was fine;however, yesterday evening it stopped seing my internet connection. I am connected to the internet I can surf the net, but when I try to use ubuntu software center it says "Failure to download package files" and in the in the details it says " cannot connect to [my ip address]:8080 ,now 8080 is the port that i remember closing like this $ sudo uwf delete allow 8080", so i tried to open it with $ sudo ufw allow 8080" but that didn't work, so i tried $sudo iptables -F even though i never installed firewall but that did nothing either.
I have this major problem with the latest version of Ubuntu (10.10). Since I applied this automatic update Ubuntu won't startup anymore.I am 99% sure it's something to do with the graphics drivers. I have an ATI Radeon HD5850. I can still boot up in safe mode in one of the older kernels of Ubuntu. But with the latest kernel I can't even get into safe mode. What I want to do now, is to remove all traces of any potential drivers and then reinstall them. What is the best way to do this?
Having enjoyed Ubuntu 10.10 for about a week parallel to Win7, I can't boot it anymore. I suppose it's because of the following: on win7 I have the Acronis Disk Director Suite (version 10.0). The Acronis OS Selector comes with it. So I thought it might be a good idea installing it before I install linux to be able to switch between the OS's afterwards. Then having ubuntu installed I ran windows and uninstalled the OS selector as I saw that ubuntu has it's own bootloader and the Acronis one didn't even run. I restarted my Laptop and win7 started automatically. No bootloader anymore. So I installed the Acronis OS Selector again and it can't even find linux (It was able to find both OS's before...) even though it shows the linux-partition (I ran the predefined installation where ubuntu partitions on its own) is still installed. So Ubuntu is still on there I just can't run it.
Where did my Ubuntu bootloader go??? (I NEED Ubuntu cuz Windows7 doesn't support my soundcard...)
Accidentally, I deleted Windows root files. I do not know why, but I cannot recover them. The point is that I had installed two versions of Windows XP Pro SP2, so from grub I had other step before starting one Window versions. But now grub does not detect windows, and if it could, I would not be able to start it because of the lack of the files at root.
The result of bootinfo gives:

I do not know what happened to sdb5. Is it a way to avoid reinstalling windows?
I've been using Ubuntu 9.04 for a few months now after switching over from XP. I've figured most issues I've had via Google I guess about a week ago, everything I download whether it be from Firefox Or Transmissions won't show up on the desktop screen. When I few the folder in Nautilus, same thing. I can see the files with the 'dir' terminal command. I did try using 'sudo' to lauch Nautilus and was able to see my files. If I drag them out of the Nautilus window and on to my desktop, they appear. Keep in mind, I know the files are in MY directory and are owned by me. Any clue to what is causing this and how to fix it?
After long while Vmware is not working anymore.. I think because some upgrade a while ago.. but when I try to run the configure.pl then I get this error.. does anybody know what is wrong?
I have had my server for quite some time now with a website running, but just recently I cannot connect in any possible way. Even from the server itself. I've tried the domain name, ip address, and internal address but it always comes up cannot connect to server. The only thing I can think of is we recently installed nortan security suite on our main computer. I've checked all the settings however and I didn't find anything wrong. Does anybody have any idea what may be causing this? I'm a little tempted to just re-install everything and start from scratch.
I installed Burg and it worked for some time. I installed some apps that I can't remember anymore and closed my comp. I restarted my computer today and Burg does not work anymore, Grub just start like before. I tried to reinstalled Burg and it changed nothing. When I check Burg-emu it shows me the right thing, like if Burg was working. Did it happened to somebody else?
my desktop cannot be locked anymore. Furthermore, after waking up from suspend, I am straight in the desktop, it does not ask me for my password anymore. The screensaver also does not activate anymore either. I'm still using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Latitude D820.
My computer had been running just fine a couple of days in a row. I had a problem and decided to reboot. But all of a sudden Ubuntu does not boot anymore!
The error shown is:
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found Try passing init=bootarg Under it it shows Busybox v13.3 (initramfs) [etc])
[then a couple of rows mentioning removable disks which is my card reader. And finally just a blinking _ sign.
I have ubuntu 10.10 installed. And I discovered GDM theme's as news as linux is for me. But is it true i can't install gdm theme's anymore ? only change background and colour?
I've had Ubuntu Netbook as my OS for about six months or so now, and suddenly it won't open anymore. I have a partition so that I can open Windows 7 if I want, but ever since I updated it last night and have restarted it, when I go to open Ubuntu it returns me to the screen to choose which OS to open.
Got a boot problem on a sony vaio with ubuntu 10.04. All was working fine, and now, suddenly, it can't boot anymore....

It looks like there is no disk in the machine. Yesterday, there was one... So I boot with a liveCD. and have a look with fdisk: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -lu Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x598c9b19 .....
With disk utility, I can find my swap partition 4Gb, my system partition (Ext4, 20Gb), and 476Gb of freespace.
Not sure exactly when it started, but when you try to click on any icon on the desktop, like Computer, or my home folder they will not open anymore. The screen act like it will but then nothing happens. I can use Dolphin to brows the file system, but I hate it.
I'm running Natty Beta, I did a dumb move by attempting to enable desktop cube from Compiz Config, and it disabled the Unity plugin. Now I can only see my desktop, I can't get any panels or even Unity to load. I can't even edit the compizconfig file.
I was messing around with trying to install themes and I must have knocked something important in compiz settings as now I am unable to move my windows around on my desktop.
Now whenever I open an application, however it opens I can't move it.
