Ubuntu :: Cannot Run Windows Anymore
Feb 7, 2011
Accidentally, I deleted Windows root files. I do not know why, but I cannot recover them. The point is that I had installed two versions of Windows XP Pro SP2, so from grub I had other step before starting one Window versions. But now grub does not detect windows, and if it could, I would not be able to start it because of the lack of the files at root.
The result of bootinfo gives:

I do not know what happened to sdb5. Is it a way to avoid reinstalling windows?

I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows
150gb ext4 | Free 600gb | RECOVERY 31GB NTFS | HP_TOOLS 108MB FAT
What can I do to recover my windows back?

My primary OS (Windows 7) which I had installed before ubuntu is not in the Grub Menu and I can't figure out how to boot it up. (It's not in menu.lst either)
I just installed ubuntu, I partitioned it by shrinking my window 7 partition (in windows) and formatted the free space for ubuntu. I can see the windows file system and access the files (143 GB Filesystem in Places) but I can't boot to it

I have dual boot Windows XP pro SP3 / Ubuntu 9.04 and I only use the Windows to download torrents because the download speed on Ubuntu is terrible...
But by accident I pressed the power button when I was downloading in Windows and since then Windows won't boot anymore. Is this a Windows problem or is it maybe that it srewed up my grub? Because I can still select Windows in the grub menu but it stops at "Starting up".

I need to use bluetooth, but for some yet unknown reason I don't seem to be able to switch on the bluetooth-card (it should be as simple as to press the Fn+F6 buttons on the keyboard to switch it on though and then the bluetooth indicator should light up, which is not happening, but I don't know if this is because of (X)ubuntu) and Ubuntu says it can't find the bluetooth card. That's not what I wanted to discuss now, but I think some history is always welcome when trying to do fault-finding I thought I maybe might be able to do it from Win7 . So after months of not having booted Win7 I thought to give it a try, but I get stuck right after the grub boot-screen. All I get is a blinking cursor for minutes and there's no HD activity. Then I booted Xubuntu again and it needed to do some check, which I passed and Xubuntu started as normal. This check was done by "Keys". I don't really know what this Keys is, but since a couple of days I always get this word below the word Xubuntu in the boot-splash-screen. This is only after I installed WinFF or DVD::RIP. There was some error during install telling me that it needed something with 'keys', so I entered the command quoted, something was installed and then the rest of the installation went okay. I've been looking in the bash_history files (user and root) but I can't find the command which I entered to install this keys-thing anymore, which is of course strange on itself.
Now I've got the idea (I'm not sure though) that I can't boot Windows because of this keys thing, but I have no clue how to get rid of it. Or could there be other problems causing Windows not to boot?
I really hope someone can help me getting back in Windows again, because losing the Windows partition really is not fun, even though I hardly use it. I can enter the Windows partition from Linux with a file manager though, so it's not vanished. Just wish to be able to boot Win7 when I need it.

I can't access my files on windows from ubuntu anymore. I was able to do that some time ago, I'm not sure what changed. I can see the shared folders, but when I try to open them, and authentication window appears, asking for the login, password and work group. It doesn't get passed that even though I enter the correct information.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on one (physical) hd and on the other one Windows. On both drives grub is installed to boot both operating systems. When I wanted to install SP1 for Win 7 I had to add a bootable flag to the partition from which Windows boots, otherwise the installation of SP1 does not work. I did so by booting into Ubuntu and using gparted to add this flag. After doing so the update for SP1 worked without any problems.
When trying to boot back into Ubuntu grub complained that it couldn't find the kernel anymore! I tried to boot into a Ubuntu minimal cd and to restore grub using chroot, update-grub and grub-install which didn't work. I still had the problem that it was Unable to boot Ubuntu putting me in some minimal system called initramfs. It seems however that the uuid of the partitions changed. I guess this happened when I added the bootflag to the windows disk.
Next thing I tried was to tell grub not to use the uuid for loading the kernel by uncommenting something in /etc/default/grub. Then I got the kernel booting but it suddenly stops (I guess when it is trying to mount the root file system) saying that the concerning uuid does not exist putting me into initramfs again. The strange thing is that there I coulnd't even manage to mount the root partition using /dev/sdb1 (on which it is in my case). Any way to restore the system again without having to reinstall it.

I'm using a dual boot system with Fedora and Windows XP. Until a few days ago i could boot in Windows or Linux choosing the option during boot. I have updated Fedora with common updates these days and now i can't boot in Windows anymore, because there are no entry for it anymore to the boot menu.
The graphical boot configuration tool (i'm using Gnome) only lists three different kernel for Fedora but any entry for a Windows partition. Here is how my disk appears:
I'd like to know why this occur and, mostly, which is the most easy way to restore the dual boot

I have Linux Mint and Windows 7 installed on my laptop, and recently tried tinkering with EasyBCD, to use the Windows multi-boot loader instead of grub. Well, that didn't work out too well, because I ended up with the Windows boot loader with two options, Windows 7 and Linux Mint, however the Linux Mint entry just redirected me to grub, which wasn't what I intended.
I tried to put things the way they were, with grub as the only boot loader, and figured I'd do so by setting EasyBCD to skip the multi boot screen and going straight to the Linux Mint entry, which corresponds to grub.Well, now when I boot, I get the grub screen, but if I select the Windows 7 entry, it just redirects me back to grub, so I can't access Windows 7 right now. What can I do to fix this? Can I edit the Windows boot loader from within Linux?

I installed 11.2 a couple weeks ago on a machine at work, and thru YaST connected to the domain. I was then able to add a printer, and thru nautilis browse to windows computers with shares. Something changed about a week ago and I've played with everything I can think of, read lots of tutorials, and still can't make it work. I'm about ready to format and reinstall from scratch and try again, as I'm out of ideas.
So the way it was before, in nautilus if I clicked on network it would give me a list of all sorts of computers on my domain, and if I clicked on one of the windows machines it would ask me my username/password, and after I entered them, I'd be in.
Now, in nautlis if I click on network it shows me "windows network" and if I click on that it gives me a list of all sorts of workgroups and domains (or something like that). If I click on the one with my domain name, it asks username/password but it doesnt work.
I've tried leaving the domain and rejoining, I've enabled and disabled kerberos, ldap, samba, everything I can think of - although I dont think I had to change those at all from default the first time.
I dont know what I could have done between when it worked and now. I did allow some installation of updates. Shortly thereafter I noticed ssh no longer worked, and after playing with it forever I couldnt make it work, I uninstalled openssh and then reinstalled it from the repository, and it worked again. No idea why it stopped working, but maybe it's related to this domain problem, I dunno.
My main goal at this time is to be able to access windows shares from the linux machine. I don't care if I have to login to linux with my windows domain account or a local account (although all the documentation I've followed said that I should be able to login with a domain username/password too).

I was trying to install PlayOnLinux but it froze at about 85% after it downloaded via the Software Center. So I had to shut the Software Center. The PlayOnLinux did install despite the fact it froze at 85%. I can't install any more stuff bec the Software Center seems opened all time some how and I get the "You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software." error.I tried the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" command it gives me this, looks like it's stuck at some connection. I'm pretty new to Linux.

I have ubuntu 10.04 and lost the ability to use synaptech package manager. I was able to use it yesterday and everything was fine;however, yesterday evening it stopped seing my internet connection. I am connected to the internet I can surf the net, but when I try to use ubuntu software center it says "Failure to download package files" and in the in the details it says " cannot connect to [my ip address]:8080 ,now 8080 is the port that i remember closing like this $ sudo uwf delete allow 8080", so i tried to open it with $ sudo ufw allow 8080" but that didn't work, so i tried $sudo iptables -F even though i never installed firewall but that did nothing either.

I cannot log in into Ubuntu anymore. I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed. My log in setting was 'automatically log in'. Later I upgraded to 10.10. When I changed the password settings to 'Show the screen for choosing who will log in' I cannot log in anymore. When I restart the laptop I see a screen with my name. When I click on it I hear a short sound and cannot enter a password. I made a short video of the log in procedure: [URL] When I go to System->Administration->Login Screen I cannot 'Unlock'. So I cannot change the setting back to Automatically login.
The way I log in into GUI is to:
- go into recovery mode
- log in as root
- log in as myself
- start 'startx'

I have this major problem with the latest version of Ubuntu (10.10). Since I applied this automatic update Ubuntu won't startup anymore.I am 99% sure it's something to do with the graphics drivers. I have an ATI Radeon HD5850. I can still boot up in safe mode in one of the older kernels of Ubuntu. But with the latest kernel I can't even get into safe mode. What I want to do now, is to remove all traces of any potential drivers and then reinstall them. What is the best way to do this?

Having enjoyed Ubuntu 10.10 for about a week parallel to Win7, I can't boot it anymore. I suppose it's because of the following: on win7 I have the Acronis Disk Director Suite (version 10.0). The Acronis OS Selector comes with it. So I thought it might be a good idea installing it before I install linux to be able to switch between the OS's afterwards. Then having ubuntu installed I ran windows and uninstalled the OS selector as I saw that ubuntu has it's own bootloader and the Acronis one didn't even run. I restarted my Laptop and win7 started automatically. No bootloader anymore. So I installed the Acronis OS Selector again and it can't even find linux (It was able to find both OS's before...) even though it shows the linux-partition (I ran the predefined installation where ubuntu partitions on its own) is still installed. So Ubuntu is still on there I just can't run it.
Where did my Ubuntu bootloader go??? (I NEED Ubuntu cuz Windows7 doesn't support my soundcard...)

This seems to be a kind of epidemic.
We are at least 3 people on the French Ubuntu forum with the same issue which has just appeared...today.
We start our laptops and they don't boot, we have just the message:
"* Stopping System V runlevel compatiblity [OK]" ...and a blinking cursor.

I've been using Ubuntu 9.04 for a few months now after switching over from XP. I've figured most issues I've had via Google I guess about a week ago, everything I download whether it be from Firefox Or Transmissions won't show up on the desktop screen. When I few the folder in Nautilus, same thing. I can see the files with the 'dir' terminal command. I did try using 'sudo' to lauch Nautilus and was able to see my files. If I drag them out of the Nautilus window and on to my desktop, they appear. Keep in mind, I know the files are in MY directory and are owned by me. Any clue to what is causing this and how to fix it?

I have had my server for quite some time now with a website running, but just recently I cannot connect in any possible way. Even from the server itself. I've tried the domain name, ip address, and internal address but it always comes up cannot connect to server. The only thing I can think of is we recently installed nortan security suite on our main computer. I've checked all the settings however and I didn't find anything wrong. Does anybody have any idea what may be causing this? I'm a little tempted to just re-install everything and start from scratch.

I've been using Thunderbird for a while. Well today it wont open anymore.
I'm just getting a very small and empty window frame, but that's it.
I've tried the command line with -safe-mode, didn't work. I've tried the command line with -profilmanager, didn't work.
The weird thing is that when using gksudo thunderbird, it does open (but of course with an empty profile)
How am I supposed to "repair" what seems to be a broken profile ?

Under it it shows

[then a couple of rows mentioning removable disks which is my card reader. And finally just a blinking _ sign.
