Ubuntu Installation :: Wipe The Slate Clean And Start Over?
May 28, 2010I need to wipe the slate clean on my computer and start from scratch. I have too many issues and school is just around the corner for me, I've got a huge workload and don't have time to find solutions to my problems right now. I recently upgraded to Lucid but that only escalated my woes. The simple fact is my machine is getting too old and it's time to upgrade everything, which won't happen until fall. So for now I simply want to downgrade to hardy because it will be supported until April next year and it is very stable, plus I think it is the release that my graphics card got a decent resolution on (ATI, need I say more?). I'm somewhat of a noob, but I've got my wits about me and have researched the forums for many hours to find solutions, but to no avail. I don't want to go into details about what issues I'm having, I just need to know how to remove ALL kernels off of Grub and start from scratch. Any links to comprehensive tutorials would be ideal, or if someone knows of anything else that will work,
P.S. I love Ubuntu and am a lifer. The philosophy behind it as well as the community are supreme and will someday rule the universe,

Jun 7, 2011I was deleting some space off my C Drive and I believe I may of accidentally deleted Fedora, or some of it! I have a dual boot with Fedora and Windows XP so when I started my desktop up it would load into fedora by default or I could press a key to load XP! (It rhymes!) Now, however, it instantly loads up into "Grub"
And that's it! Run, Or Exit, or anything really, doesn't work! Except Reboot! So I'm a little stuck. It's an old PC and the Windows XP disc is long gone, if I ever had one! I had this thought that perhaps if I reinstall Fedora from a CD it many bring back the old command prompt and let me get back into XP again? Or, is that crazy talk??

Jan 25, 2010I messed up the first installation of Fedora on my server. My setup is as follows: Fedora and Gnome - NFS system, No dual boot (Windows or anything) Fedora ISO DVD downloaded No kickstart or other tools. how to set this up, from the time I insert the disk and have it boot up (configged already to boot from it). I know how to wipe it clean at intall time. Is that the root directory? And, is /boot the actual boot directory? I'm just having a hard time uderstanding that. As I said, I just want a quick itemized list, step 1, step 2, etc, from partitioning, creating file system, mounting, etc. in the right order.

May 16, 2011I was dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04 just fine for about the last week but then ran into some issues and decided to reinstall Ubuntu. Now after the install I get this error: error: nu such device: d38af2a9-740e-4d3c-b267-2a3848e5d319 and it goes into the grub rescue command prompt screen. I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu about 6 times now, complete installs. I have tried changing boot priority multiple times. I installed off a thumb drive and left the thumb drive in after install, took it out after install.

I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Jan 15, 2011So I wanted to get rid of ubuntu 10.10 on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop as I wanted to make some hd space. Its a dual boot with windows 7. I deleted the ubuntu partition and expanded the windows partition to fill the whole hard drive again. When I restarted my laptop I got the "error: no such partition. Grub rescue>" message.
I tried inserting my ubuntu 10.10 boot cd but whenever I boot from the cd I get the exact same grub rescue error. Is it possible to remedy this situation from the error? I am currently unable to download a windows recovery cd so I'm stuck in the grub rescue page unless its possible to fix this mess from the error prompt.

May 6, 2011After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

Jun 5, 2009I've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.
I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst
and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place?As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.
CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?
Mar 21, 2011I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot

Mar 19, 2010I am trying to boot up linux on a SATA drive. The SATA drive already had some other linux. I 'fdisk' the SATA drive and cleared all partitions. Now tried to CD boot with linux, it copied over to the SATA drive, however, when i tried to boot from harddrive, it gave me a GRUB Error 22. Why does this happen ? Shouldnt the linux have created its own partition ?

Mar 9, 2011i've worked with Linux for a while now, but never in a double boot kind of way (except using wubi), and i'm still kind of a newby.i have 2 harddrivesfirst one has only 1 partition; Windows XPsecond one has 1 empty partition, simple storageand another partition where i installed fedora core, and GRUB is also located on this harddrive.I changed harddrive priority to my second harddrive, result:GRUB comes up, no problem, but when I try to boot windows, it tells mentldr is missing ctrl alt del to continueso i changed the harddisk priority back to the way it was, where the first drive containing windows is first priority... but then, no GRUB.i've tried editing the grub conf,i've tried fixboot/fixmbrtl;dr:no ntdlr when linux harddrive is main priorityno grub when windows harddrive is main priority

Jan 12, 2010I installed The latest and greatest Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and everything is clicking along just fine except one annoying feature that I am unable to get my finger on.I have quite a list of choices at bootup. I updated a couple version of the kernel and there is this memtest thing...twice... Then my family also uses windows 7 so that is the default at the bottom of the list set to boot after 3 seconds to keep the nagging to a minimum.
I would like to know the cleanest and safest way to have the list only show the current kernel option and the windows 7 option if this is even advised. Would it be best to have a backup (Previous kernel) in the list? *just in case* Is it safe to seek out the old kernel by version number and uninstall? Will this remove the entries in the list? Is editing the list and leaving other options installed wise? Is there a gui grub2 configuration tool with these advanced options? I have StartUp-Manager, but there is no options to change the list.
Im looking for the best/safest option to get this done because I now see another kernel update image in the update manager and it is going to increase the size of my list once I find the time to update. Im a bit green and scared I will ruin a good thing here. Everything is working perfectly so far and I realize one click and it could all be over.

Feb 24, 2010A friend of mine asked me to install ubuntu on his system as he finally got enough of all the flaws and problems in his vista. I said no problems ill have ubuntu up and running in no time! Well this is 2 days later and still nothing, he's computer refuses to boot from cd, i been changing the boot sequence allot but no indications of it wanting to boot the cd at all, whatever i try. So i made a bootable ubuntu usb-stick, doesnt work everytime i boot but sometimes... i get the load-up-screen, select install ubuntu, go ahead with the install, everything goes like clockwork. "restart is needed" sure, i restart it. grub says something like cant boot, or nothing to boot on hdd.. and thats that. ive reinstalled it several times (10+), trying ext2,ext3,ext4, partitioning it diffrently, ive tried it all. i even took out the scsi hdd, and tried an old ide-drive i had, gave me the exact same error..
i dont have all the specs but ill write what i know:
GA-ma78gm-s2h gigabyte motherboard
AMD Quad 3ghz
4 gb ddr
500 gb scsi
Ubuntu :: 10.04 Clean Install Causes Grub Unknown FileSystem
May 7, 2010I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and during the upgrade it asked to install a new version of grub or keep the current one. Thinking that I should just upgrade the grub just to make sure that I had the latest version I decided to do it. So I told it the partitions to use the ubuntu, ubuntu swap, vista, and vista recovery.Finished the upgrade and restarted.I tried to boot into both the vista, and vista recovery but I noticed something weird. Grub switched the names, the actual vista install is called recovery, and when you tried to load it, a blinking cursor would appear for a split second and then loop back to grub. If you tried to select the vista recovery now called vista it would just sit at the blinking cursor for infinity. But booting into ubuntu worked.
So I decided to wipe ubuntu and do a fresh install of 10.04. Went through and set up the swap and ext4 partitions at the end of the hard drive(because I would like to expand the windows directory should I ever be able to boot into it). Now when I start up and select vista recovery now called vista it sits at the blinking cursor just as before.

Dec 11, 2010I reformatted my root partition and boot partitions and installed ,averick but zhen I boot I get a grub 15 error. I might have made a mistake on the partitioning screen zhen I selected /dev/dsa6 for the GRUB bootloader - this is my dedicated /boot partition - and don't know how to fix it now
my current fstab is code...
By mounting all partitions one by one I can see now that everything has moved around so that
sda is the bigbastard drive - 500GB - that was sdb previously
sdb is supersize/basckup and was sdc before
the paritions on sda have moved to sdc
I have no idea hot to put everything back

Nov 20, 2010my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

On every installation I've cleaned the MBR and made new partitioning at all for a single system. Tried to partition the disk manually and tried the "use entire disk" option with the automatic wizard. Same results on all cases, when the installation process goes well at all.
I've tried also to leave the computer some hours with the "GRUB Loading." message, but it doesn't move and remains with the same screen/text. Cursor remains blinking all the time under the GRUB message. In all cases Control+Alt+Del works to reboot. With hundreds of installations made, I've never found the same situation. It would be so strange to be a hardware issue.

Sep 9, 2010I use wubi 10.04 installed on my xp drive. the other day my pc froze while surfing the internet. I used the following key combination to reboot my pc (this is the first time I'm trying it), but when I selected ubuntu, I don't get the grub boot menu, on the other hand, I get a little welcome message to the grub prompt and "grub>"How do I fix this and boot into Ubuntu?
