Ubuntu :: Can't Install 10.10 On New Computer

Oct 23, 2010

I just put together a new computer, started to install win7 and then tried to install Ubuntu.

Ubuntu (The installer) tells me that I don't have at least 2.6 GB available drive space...

I have a 640GB SATA 3.0 HD and the only thing on it is win7. On previous versions of Ubuntu this was never an problem. Ubuntu always helped me with the partition.

I have tried both the 64 and 32 bit versions of Ubuntu 10.10 and get the same result.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reformat Computer And Install 11.2?

Jul 22, 2010

At the moment I've got dual-bootable machine with WinXP (25GB on hard disk) and openSUSE 11.2 (20GB on hard disk). After saving the important files on my ~/home I want to wipe off all data from both my partitions and then install WinXP (with 15GB) and openSUSE 11.2 with 30GB. The problem is I'm not sure how to go about doing this? I'm guessing the problem will be the boot process. I installed openSUSE on a machine that already had WinXP and I didn't change any boot settings so it must still be controlled by XP. So presumably I'd have to:

1. Remove openSUSE first and then remove XP using the XP CD.
2. Install XP again
3. Install openSUSE on another partition as I did before but with different partition sizes.

Or should I install openSUSE first before XP? I think I'm more confident on installing XP first since I've already done it earlier. The only other complication is that this is my 'laptop' screen is broken so I use an external monitor. This is what prevented me from formatting my computer earlier.

Thanks.

I want to install Ubuntu Server on my server, but I can't move my monitor. What I have tried to do:

1. Install Ubuntu Server onto Computer A.
2. Move Computer A's hard disk into Computer B.
3. Boot Computer B without a monitor.
4. Use SSH to get a remote terminal. This is where my problem is.

Is this possible? I told the installer to install the OpenSSH Server, so it should work, right?

Ubuntu :: Won't Install After Computer Repair

Jul 30, 2010

I got my laptop repaired (by the manufacturer). Linux would install fine before, but not now, as all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. Note, I've only tried KDE versions of software since my laptop came back, so I don't know if that's the problem. I tried linux mint 9 and kubuntu 10.04. And all I get after a while is described above. I also tried some different install options, because I'm able to get to the menu to choose which type of install I want, but the other options led to the same thing, and it would sometimes display a bunch of numbers and then "EH ok" or something. the numbers on the left keep increasing, and eventually I get to the splash screen, where it freezes, and repeats the process.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Won't Install On 2nd Computer?

Jan 5, 2011

I installed 10.10 on my laptop with little problems. I abootm now trying to do the same on my desktop.First, my hard drive has Windows Vista installed, but it won't load the OS so I figured I could load ubuntu from the DVD and install that instead. When I first load, after my HP splash screen, I get a quick linux v. number and then load to a purple ubuntu splash screen. If I don't hit enter on this screen, it will go to a blinking cursor shortly after.

If I do hit enter, it asks my language and then gives me the options to try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check disk, check memory, boot from HD. and then the F key options at the bottom.I cannot load any of these options, it just moves to a blinking cursor. However, I was able to remove the quiet splash and get some code.It was much easier for me to take pictures of the code. So here it is. This is the code that scrolls down pretty fast after selecting install ubuntu.

I then tried the try ubuntu without installing option, and I recieved the same code.I tried the check CD utility, and it froze also. I took this picture of the last lines of code i could see. It's weird that this DVD worked to install on my laptop but not on the desktop.

Ubuntu :: Won't Install On One Dell Computer

Mar 14, 2011

Tried to install Kubuntu on a Dell Dimension 2350, 2gb ram, 250gb hd, single core intel 1.6mhz processor. It's opening screen comes up, tested drive, memory, and choose install, and there it sits, for hours, just Kubuntu logo, and the dots light across the bottom.

What I tried: Wiped the HD (same result) Changed CD/DVD Drive with new one (same result) Made new Kubuntu CD (same result) Checked and changed ribbon cables for new ones (same result) Checked all settings in the bios (same result) I tried putting in the XP install CD and it loaded. Wiped Drive again. Put same new CD/DVD drive in another Dell (this one a Dimension 5100 dual core), and same Kubuntu install CD and it installed with no problem.

Ubuntu :: Install Onto An Older Computer?

May 16, 2011

I'm trying to install Ubuntu onto an older computer. It has 1GB of RAM.

I couldn't get the disc to boot up on start up so I got Ubuntu to fix that for me with the handy feature it has on the installation disc.

However, when trying to boot up Ubuntu from the disc, it gives me this error:

try (hd0,0): NTSF5: error: "prefix" is not set

Waiting for about two minutes seems to ignore this, however, as it goes straight into the Ubuntu start up screen. However, after being there for a moment the loading bar stops loading and it seems to stop working in general.

Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install 9.10 On Computer

Apr 5, 2010

I'm trying to set up a simple computer that will be used to run an IRC bot only. All it needs is an active internet connection, some processing power and for Ubuntu 9.10 to install correctly.I've got all of those BUT the working install When I run the installer, I have to use Safe Graphics Mode to be able to get it through the setup screens (not much RAM). Everything is great, except for that when it starts up the partition manager during the install, it says it can't create a ext4 file system also, it says it has a problem with creating 2 other partitions and that Linux won't be able to detect changes until a restart.

Ubuntu :: Install/Setup For Computer To Be Sold?

Feb 15, 2011

I have toyed with the idea of building some systems with Ubuntu to sell locally. Most of the systems I see advertised in the local papers seem WAY over priced, so I thought I could make a few bucks by selling competitive systems. However, I would rather send them out with Ubuntu on them. Maybe the $100 savings over the other OS might get a few more people trying out Ubuntu.

However, I would rather have the system installed, but have it go through some of the questions from the normal install to set up the user accounts, computer name etc... I would not want systems going with with usernames and computer names that I selected.

I have done some searching, and have found "how to's" for making your own install disk (custom packages already part of it, back grounds etc...) but that is not really what I want. Plus, an install like this could then be an easy way for local computer shops to sell computers with Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Security :: Computer Shutdown During 11.04 Install?

Apr 29, 2011

My laptop randomly shuts off, at first I thought it was an issue with the laptop overheating but during the install of 11.04 I made sure the laptop had a fan blowing on it constantly and checked it and determined it couldn't have overheated. My problem now is that I was able to use a live cd to access my old files but was presented with only two files stating that my files were encrypted, I'm don't ever recall encrypting my files and so I'm without a passphrase.

What I'm wondering, is there a way to gain access without the passphrase? Or is there a way to fix the corrupt install?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install On Brand New Computer

Jun 7, 2010

I did it the wubi.exe way this time and I installed ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on my brand new HP dual-core 64-bit with win7. I was super happy to see it install too, because I've definitely missed using ubuntu in the past few days while setting this computer up.

However upon reboot, I see the usual "choice" menu. I choose ubuntu... it then goes directly to grub menu. I click the generic (I also tried safemode too) and I then only get full screen of code with a blinking curser at the bottom. Nothing else happens so I eventually have tp hard shut down. I sure wish I could screenshot all of that code... it's way to much to type out though, sorry.

I already tried the i915.modeset=1 and the i915.modeset=0 after quiet splash tricks, because yes, I do have an Intel. It's a brand new computer though, I thought only older intel cards had thar problem?

I also tried a fresh install of 9.10, even 9.04 (with live cd's that I know work)... same thing. A screen full of code after clicking "Try without...."
