May 15, 2010

pyramid@Pyramid:~$ cvt 1366 768
# 1368x768 59.88 Hz (CVT) hsync: 47.79 kHz; pclk: 85.25 MHz
Modeline "1368x768_60.00" 85.25 1368 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync
pyramid@Pyramid:~$ xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.25 1368 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync
pyramid@Pyramid:~$ xrandr

I'm trying to boot Ubuntu from a LiveCD in a computer I recently bought that currently has Windows XP on it. The Ubuntu menu comes up when I boot but it always snags on an error "failed to restore CRTC configuration -22" or something like that, and just goes on ad infinitum.
I tried running Linux Mint too and had the same problem, which makes me think it's an issue with the computer itself - which is an Averatec, if that helps.

I just Install Ubuntu for the first time and am having problems setting my hdtv's native resolution of 1280x768. I have tried editing the xorg.conf file with no success. Video card is an Nvidia 8600GT. Also I have a dual boot with Fedora 12 and it runs at 1280X768 with the same xorg.conf file edits i have been tring in Ubuntu. Here is my current xorg.conf file:
Code:

Identifier "Default Screen"

I cannot get my desired resolution and refresh rate in Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid). I want to run at the best my poor monitor can, which in Windows (XP through 7) is 1152*864 with a refresh rate of 72Hz.
I want these setting in Ubuntu, and many grey hairs have been produced in trying to make it happen. I can get the correct resolution, but not the refresh rate.
I'm using the proprietary Nvidia drivers, which are up to date.
System info:
I have a CRT Monitor connected to a laptop via the VGA connector. The monitor is a 16" AOC brand (this is all I know, and for all my efforts I cannot find the manual for it from just this information). The graphics card is a GeForce 9600M GS
Things I've tried:
Using the regular default drivers Editing Xorg.conf in all manner of ways (seems to always be ignored upon reboot. I don't get that). 3 days of googling Asking at the Ubuntu forums.
How can I do this, if I can?
how all of this works, how xorg.conf and the Nvidia program interact and such.

Other info: The X.ORG Foundation v1.6.4. How can I get the desired screen resolution?

I need to find notes on how to achieve higher screen resolution via Xorg.conf and some other fixes since I just installed the NVIDIA driver... seems out of the box, my resolution is horrid, though theres an added NVIDIA Server and my dual monitors aren't configured to work. I used this tutorial to get the driver installed.

Basically I want to change the resolution on my computer as the desktop is partially lost off of the screen. The needed resolution is not available so I am attempting to add a new resolution. I have used the [URL] for information on how to do this. I am completely new to Ubuntu and entering code so a TON of the results online have meant jibberish to me as people leave out the basics which I cannot find. Here is what I've done so far in the terminal...
I enter:
xrandr
I get:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 698mm x 392mm
1920x1080 60.0*+
1920x1080i 30.0
1280x720 60.0
2020x1180_60.00 (0x169) 200.0MHz
h: width 2024 start 2160 end 2376 total 2728 skew 0 clock 73.3KHz
v: height 1180 start 1183 end 1193 total 1224 clock 59.9Hz
I enter:
xrandr --newmode <Mode''Line>
I get:
bash: syntax error near unexpected token 'newline'
Already I see an error message though without knowing what else to do I try to continue the code as follows...
I enter:
cvt 2020 1180
I get:
# 2024x1180 59.90 Hz (CVT) hsync: 73.31 kHz; pclk: 200.00 MHz
Modeline "2024x1180_60.00" 200.00 2024 2160 2376 2728 1180 1183 1193 1224 -hsync +vsync
At this point I see it shows 2024x1180 when I actually entered 2020x1180 which I find odd, though I try the next part with both 2024 and 2020 with same results.
I enter:
xrandr --newmode "2020x1180_60.00" 200.00 2024 2160 2376 2728 1180 1183 1193 1224 -hsync +vsync
I normally get no response after with a blank cursor, though one time I got:
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (RRCreateMode)
Serial number of failed request: 27

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

im a long time Ubuntu user that is giving Fedora a spin using Virtualbox on my Win7 machine. I have managed to get it up and running and guest additions working but have run into a problem with a few of the updates available in the Software Updates section.
It originally had around 75+ updates to install and seemed to do this fine. Unfortunately after a reboot and new check it comes up with 11 new updates. When I run install updates it gives me an error (see this post title) along with this bit of gibberish:
Code:
PackageKit = 0.4.6-8.fc11 is needed by package PackageKit-glib-0.4.6-8.fc11.i586
sane-backends = 1.0.19-15.fc11 is needed by package sane-backends-libs-1.0.19-15.fc11.i586
perl = 4:5.10.0-68.fc11 is needed by package 1:perl-Pod-Escapes-1.04-68.fc11.i586
gnome-media = 2.26.0-6.fc11 is needed by package gnome-media-libs-2.26.0-6.fc11.i586 : Success - empty transaction I have searched around on google and came across similar issues for folks but in most cases they were trying to do a system update that caused the issue. I am not (this is a fresh install tonight of 11). Most other cases also didnt seem to have quite so many items listed.

I am trying to install a program called libdvdcss0.0.1, it was a tar,gz2 file and I already extracted it via terminal to /opt/ but now that its extracted, I read the install readme file and tried going by those directions. Not working here is my results on that:
scott@Home:~$ cd /opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1/
scott@Home:/opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1$ /configure --help
bash: /configure: No such file or directory
scott@Home:/opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1$ configure --help
configure: command not found
scott@Home:/opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1$ make install
cd extras/libdvdcss && make install
make[1]: Entering directory `/opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1/extras/libdvdcss'
mkdir -p /videolan
m 644 videolan/dvdcss.h /videolan
make[1]: m: Command not found
make[1]: [install] Error 127 (ignored)
mkdir -p
mkdir: missing operand
Try `mkdir --help' for more information.
make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1/extras/libdvdcss'
make: *** [install] Error 2
scott@Home:/opt/libdvdcss-0.0.1$
I don't know if its something I am doing wrong or what but everytime I try and install a file this way or by the programs readme file it always goes wrong in someway shape or form. The only way I have installed a program successfully is through kpackagekit and I am desperately trying to learn terminal's language here, the only thing standing in my way from switching from windows to linux entirely is these damn problems.

I recently have bought a digital reflex. After a few shootings and so on it's now come the time to use my Ubuntu at best to work with my camera. Can you recommend to me some software (if it's an all in 1 product the better)
What I'm really interested in is handling RAW format (.cp2 if I'm correct?), tagging renaming and organizing my pictures (both with and without filters and so on applied on them). Also it would be great if it would allow me to bulk export images at the desired size and quality. (I've tried digiKam but it doesn't import pictures from my camera)

HeI'm currently having a problem with a Debian 6 server. The server has a subdomain given from the hosting company. On the machine we'll be hosting a domain with a different name from the hosting's. The domain is pointing to the server's IP address but if you try to ping it will not return any replies. If you ping the machine's subdomain it returns ping. At first I though it's a firewall blocking the ICMP but that's not the case. I've installed apache and tried to open the domain from a browser - the result:
1. The subdomain and the IP address works perfect
2. The desired domain doesn't open.
I'm coming from Slackware and most probably I'm missing something. It may be something really little that I'm missing. What may be the problem? Is it coming from debian or there's a firewall blocking the domain?

I looked for a solution to this, and found a thread for it ,but I dont know how to do what it says. Here is part of it by the user "cameronol": There is a bug in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic with the default /etc/X11/xorg.conf involving Nvidia. receive the error"Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'.Then he posts:
[Code]...
Then he says to delete the first section with the default screen, and it will be fixed. But HOW do I look for the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to edit it,and how do I edit it?I am new to ubuntu, but I have learned to use a terminal(I think)It seems to be just like the "run" box on Windows.I did a search for the file, but came up empty.I want to fix this cause every time I restart,I have a low resolution that is impossible to work in.

I try to boot Fedora 10 without initrd. System boots normally if I make in some nodes in /dev such as /dev/console. Almost everything works fine, but when I try ping with record route option -R I get this error
Quote:
ping: record route: No message of desired type
If I boot with initrd ping -R works without this error. Iptables not running.
Also this error appear when I try to boot from LiveCD F11-Alpha-i686-Live-KDE.iso or other Fedora 10 LiveCDs.

I recently moved to Thunderbird 3, and liked the tab viewing, even the search module. I have problem though, that currently tried to solve, without success. When I search for mails from a sender (eg. coss@cat.com), a new tab is opened, and I can see them all, but I can't figure out how to copy all these mails into a desired folder of Inbox (eg. cat). So ... I use Ububtu 9.10.

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

I was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.
