When i click the networks icon on the toolbar, these options popup:
Wired Network - (disconnected)
Wireless Networks (device not ready--firmware missing)
VPN Connections
I can click VPN connections and that's it. How do i get the firmware needed to connect to a wireless network?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a lenovo w510 laptop and I installed openSUSE 11.3 KDE on it. the wireless works fine at home (802.11g WPA2) when I go to work I have tried to set up the wifi for the 802.1X PEAP network but it doesn't look like it even tries to connect.
The work network set up is as follows. non-brodcasting SSID (do I need to tell network manager of this? I manually enter the SSID no problem)

blank anonymous identity
no CA cert (I suspect this might be the problem)

I have verified my username and pw several times, as well as the SSID. Just yesterday I helped a co-worker get on the network under ubuntu and it worked like a charm.
The Hardware profile displays the wifi card as a "WiFi Link 6000 Series" It is an intel card.
I have only had a few weeks worth of experience with linux, so I'm probably considered a newbie at this but I felt like giving it a shot. I just configured my new Toshiba Satellite A505-S6969 to jaunty. Most of the transition is going well but I'm stuck with a few issues, one of which is getting my wifi to work. I installed Kubuntu 11.04, and it's really difficult. I located my wireless network, and after putting in my WEP key, it just says " Setting Network Address", while prompting me to re-enter my WEP/Hex key. After repeatedly entering the password, I get a red circle/slash icon in lieu of the network icon.
I need to know what is BSSID.. I want to connet it but I have problems with this...? Where I should to find that code..? or what is it...?

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing an old (5 year) laptop with XP loaded I installed wubi to save altering partitions etc. It all downloaded fine and connected to the internet by wire. I set up the wireless connection using WPA but could not connect. The wirelsss card does see my network and others. After lurking around the forum and trying various things I found that I could connect without encryption. The more I read the more I became confused.
Anyway what I could glean about my Wireless Card it is a Intersil Prism2 mini usb adapter - but also shows up as an Acer ?? Warplink 802.11.

I became even more confused and got a bit lost using the various codes in the terminal and looking up things about drivers etc but would like to persist.
I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for 2 days and there's one problem left to solve. It cannot connect to my home encrypted wifi but it has no problem connecting to open wifi. I used this site [URL] to change my wifipassword but it still doesn't work. Interestingly my Windows partition connects to it without any change so I don't even know if I'm really changing the password. The router is a Linksys WRT54G2. How can I change the wifi password, know what it is, and make sure Ubuntu knows how to connect to it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo recently we switched Internet Providers. While we had Bellsouth, my laptop would connect to our wireless internet flawlessly everytime. However, we just switched to Charter because it was both cheaper and faster. But now, my laptop will not connect to our wireless. If I hook it up to an Ethernet cord, it connects just fine. I believe they gave us a new modem/router or whatever it is that sends out the wifi signal.
I have tried to connect with this laptop on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Backtrack 4. On Ubuntu and Linux Mint, after I enter the correct WEP key, it sits there and tried to connect for a minute or two, but then the window pops up asking for the WEP key again, even though it's still filled out.
When I tried connecting on Backtrack, it told me that it could not obtain an IP address.
about 90 percent of the time, i cannot connect to the internet. i click on the icon and select the network, but for some reason, instead of saying, "connection established", it says, "you are now disconnected."

View 1 Replies View Relatedi was fed up after i can't connect to wifi using ubuntu. the problem happened after my router is being replaced to a new one because the old one got struck by lightning. good thing i dual-boot my laptop so i can access the internet using Windows 7 now.
i use the default network manager to connect to wifi before, but it all seem to be failed after the replacement of router. i also used Wicd but it failed to connect either. it says in the notification "disconnected: bad password" but the password was right. my wifi used WEP password with open authentication.
i even remove the WEP password and try to connect, but it failed. all i can do is to boot in windows 7 and surf internet there. what could cause this problem? is it the router, the telephone line? i can set the router settings if i want, but i don't know what causes the problem.

I have a Fedora Box with chillispot loaded for a captive protal wifi network. I am needing my office lan to connect to a controller on the WIFI network. I have tried many different firewall rules and have only momentarly able to ping something on the other network. here's some configuration info and my firewall rules that I thought should work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I select the wifi icon on the panel, it just shows "No network devices available". I know my network can be found when I search with my iPhone, so I know there are networks to connect to. So, I checked the drivers, and it informs me that the B43 and STA drivers are not activated. So thats not a big deal, I guess, but when I use my ethernet cord, my laptop doesn't recognize/acknowledge (I'm not sure what the right term would be)it. I'm fairly sure I can't activate these drivers without an internet connection because when I do try, a message pops up saying "failed to fetch" with some long link.
My only guess is that it could be a hardware problem, but I really have no idea. I guess the ethernet problem is my only real problem. Because after I establish and internet connection the the rest is easy to fix.I'm sure its obvious, but I'll go ahead say that I'm a novice ubuntu user. I've only been working with it for about a week, but I'm learning alot.
I just installed 9.10 and I can't detect any wireless networks. Is the card compatible with 9.10? Do I need to install any drivers? If the card isn't compatible with 9.10 is it compatible with later versions of Ubuntu? View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my netbook in the mail yesterday, opened it up, logged in, and Windows 7 was installed. Being a Windows hater my whole life, I followed a friend's advice and downloaded Ubuntu netbook, made a USB drive, changed the BIOS settings, all that. Here's when the stupidity occurs--I decided to go ahead and install Ubuntu without trying it, and to delete Windows to do so. A couple minutes later I realized that was a really, really stupid idea, so in a panic I turned my netbook off. I turned it back on and it was still on install but not really moving, so I powered off and on again and went back to the "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" choice screen. I chose "Try Ubuntu" and found that it did not recognize my home wifi network or ask me to join--or any wifi network, for that matter.
Now, it did recognize my wifi network the few minutes I spent on Windows 7, so I tried to change the BIOS settings back to where I could just use that until I figured out the problem. But no matter which setting I tried (HDD/SDD just gives me a black screen, and FDD and LAN do the same as the USB drive), I can't get back to Windows, so I guess I did delete it. Which leaves me with a netbook that can only connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Which kind of defeats the purpose.
Questions I should answer:
1. How am I trying to get online? My home's wireless network. We have a router. All the other laptops in the house connect fine.
2. Who is my internet service provider (and in which country?) COX, United States.
3. Can you get online with any other method? Yes, the internet works fine with an ethernet cable.
4. How am I getting online to post in this forum? My parent's laptop.
5. What hardware are you using? Toshiba N505 netbook and a router. I can give more information about the router if you need it, but I doubt it's the program since the other laptops are fine.
Give me one moment and I will add some code that it gives me when I put in the commands this website tells me to.My two final questions are:
1. Is there any way to recover Windows without buying it again?
2. How can I get Ubuntu to connect to my home wifi network?

On Fedora 15, when I boot kernel 2.6.40, my laptop is unable to connect to my wireless-G AP. dmesg shows the following:

It works fine, however, when I boot using kernel 2.6.38 (from which I am posting) and in Windows. Also, I found some emails from the linux-wireless mailing list which appear to be talking about the same problem.
The system is fully updated. I've tried the 11n_disable=1 hint I came across on the ThinkPad wiki, but it didn't help. (I'm on an Asus K42Ja, in case it's relevant)
Although I'm fine with staying at 2.6.38 for now, are there workarounds/fixes for this?
