Ubuntu :: CD Broken In Drive Now Not Ejecting Properly
Jan 9, 2010
I am using computers from past 10 years and never seen or heard this type of problem which I faced few hours back. I wanted to copy data from some CD's and DVD's onto my HDD, after some time I heard loud noise like some thing exploded in the CPU cabinet, I switched off the computer and I was shocked to see that the whole CD in the Drive is broken into pieces!
Immediately I removed drive and dismantled the DVD Drive and removed all the pieces, again fixed it, now everything works but the tray is not ejecting properly. Now I am worried to insert some important CD's and DVD's, I don't know what exactly happened? and I even don't know whether to continue with the same drive or its time to buy new drive? I am using it from 2006....

When i am updating the following error is coming:
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
By using yum update --skip-broken i am able to update only some applications

So I popped in a blank CD, opened up brasero, told it to create a new video project, added my files.... It told me to install vcdimager, so I did that and restarted brasero. I then told it to burn the video files to the disk as an (S)VCD. It began converting the files before the burn. After the conversion was complete, it gave the message "ejecting medium" and then it ejected the disk. After that, it said it encountered and error and wouldn't do anything from there. I tried a different CD, I tried just closing the disk drive. It just gives me the same error.

I'm trying to "Safely Eject" my USB mem stick and am getting:
"Volume is Busy"
And it's showing that it's the application:
x-nautilus-desktop
as the culprit.
Should I should down the Nautilus process? How can I unmount/eject the stick?

I've encountered a problem when trying to burn a video file to DVD using Brasero Disc Burner. I put the DVD and then open up Brasero and click on "video protect" then I chose the video file I want to burn, I click the "burn" button and choose the settings I want then when press the "burn" button once more.
I then get this screen...
It then ejects the DVD and I get this...

Not sure where to put this so please let me know if this does not belong here.I recently noticed that the "eject" command will not work on NTFS formatted USB drives. It errors out with something like:umount: <path to mount point> is not in fstab (and you are not rootIt works if you are root. I can also eject the drive from the nautilus desktop as an unprivileged user. This command also works if the drive is FAT formatted and I am an unprivileged user.I only started to notice this behavior after I switch to F14. F11, F12, and F13 did not seem to have this issue.Anyone have any clues as to how to fix this?BTW, auto-mounting works just fine, just plug the drive in (no "mount" command necessary). I'm only having issues with the "eject" command as an unprivileged user.

Basically, my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop crashed and now when I try to boot into it I get all sorts of error messages and then I get dropped into a shell - it can't find the device etc. I tried running fsck from the command line but it can't find it. My DVD Drive isn't reading properly so I have no way of running the Recovery software on there.

It's pretty much as simple as that. I am simply wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial of some kind or can explain how to partition around, in order to exclude bad data blocks on a busted hard drive. This is on a computer I just set up to run Karmic Koala. On another forum someone mentioned that there is a way to do this, and that is the only way, to my knowledge to "fix" said hard drive. On a complete side note, does anyone know if an Intel 965 is supposed to work with Karmic out of the box, if you will? I haven't gotten a chance to check it specifically for this, and there seems to be no mention of this chipset with Karmic on these forums.

I am trying to run Fedora on my PPC Mac. The mac has a broken internal CD rom drive. I do have a external one but I don't know how to boot it from the external CD drive. I also tried using a backup program called Superduper! (Superduper! is designed to make a bootable backup) but that just copped the Fedora files to my usb without making it bootable.

I would like to install Edubuntu 10.10 on this ancient Toshiba with Windows XP on it. The situation is a little complicated since I have no stable internet connection (I can not download Edubuntu once more). Now I realised that the DVD-Drive is broken and I can not boot from DVD to install Edubuntu. I have, however, an external USB-Drive, but there is no Boot-Option from USB (Phoenix Bios V. 1.3). So now I figured different options:
I could update my PhoenixBios to have a USB-Boot-Support. But I don't know if that's possible, so I am asking for opinions.I sucessfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi on the Laptop, but I wasn't able to install the packages for Edubuntu. Any time I put the DVD in my external USB-Drive and tried to mount with Synaptic I got the error message: "E: Could not mount CD-Rom". So I could install Ubuntu 10.10 with the CD, the Edubuntu-packages in addition with the DVD afterwards. Is there no way to install Edubuntu directly with Wubi?

I can't boot Ubuntu powerPC 10.04 from a exterla CD/DVD drive on a PowerPC mac that has a broken internal CD/DVD drive. If I hold down the OPTION key it shows me a list of bootable drives. It shows my hard drive and a CD icon with a tux icon next to it. I click the cd icon and then click the go arrow. The screen turns black and it loads the list of bootable devices again but, the icons are all black after it reloaded the list and I can't click on any of them.

Failure to safely remove the USB with the following techniques:
1) umount /dev/sdd and I get the error "umount: /dev/sdd is not mounted (according to mtab)"
2) dolphin > right click the drive icon > safely remove: I get the error message "org.desktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure: Cannot open /media/.hal-mtab"
3) konqueror: sys:/info > click the drive eject button (nothing happens)
4) device notifier > click the drive eject button : I get a ERROR in Plasma Workspace that says "Could not unmount the device. One or more files on the device are open within an application" ... NOTE: this will happen on a fresh reboot with the folders of the USB never accessed, much less files being open on it.I have also noticed something similar when dealing with cds/dvds.... seems like I can only eject on a reboot.

I had a corrupted superblock in my RAID boot drive (/dev/md0), which I fixed with fsck in Recovery Mode. However, after rebooting, the same boot-up problem (hanging for hours) persists. When I re-enter Recovery Mode to examine the boot drive, I found its superblock was corrupted again (which I fixed again using fsck). Is there a proper reboot procedure which is gentle on the boot drive, such that it doesn't corrupt it? Or, is something else amiss

I have an issue after the installation of debian 8.2 on an usb flash drive:
I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.
So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.
Update fdisk output:
/dev/sda1 2048 2050047 2048000 1000M Windows recovery environment
/dev/sda2 2050048 2582527 532480 260M EFI System
/dev/sda3 2582528 4630527 2048000 1000M Lenovo boot partition

I have successfully setup a FOG server to image my Windows clients, so I have tftp, pxe and anything else related to booting to a pxe server setup and rocking. What I'm trying to do now, is use the CentOS net install files to setup CentOS on an old server with no USB boot option, and a broken scsi cdrom drive (it's a Dell PowerEdge 2400, with a single PIII 733 and 1.25GB ram).
Using the FOG Projects gparted wiki entry (adding gparted to the pxe boot menu) I was actually successfully able to pull the net install files over to the PE, and install CentOS 5.5 via local ftp server. At first it kept erroring out (I kept picking and choosing individual packages from the package groups), so I thought it may be an issue with the GUI install (the python script kept spitting back errors forcing a reboot). In any case, I finally got through the GUI install, but now I need / want to know how to force a text mode install.
[Code]....
the bolded "append" line is where I thought I could force the text mode install script, but that didn't work. The vmlinuz and initrd.img files were both pulled form the net install iso, NOT the livecd. Would that have made a difference? If not, what / where / how should I force the text mode install script?

I installed Debian Squeeze on my Acer AspireOne yesterday, and was delighted to see that my ZTE MF627 broadband dongle (from 3 UK) appeared to work "out of the box". I wasn't able to connect due to lack of signal, but the behaviour was as I expected. (The dongle is one with a "zero CD" that needs to be ejected before the modem itself can be accessed. Recent versions of udev are supposed to do this automagically.)
However, when I tried to use the dongle today, I was unable to make it work. It appears that udev is no longer ejecting the zero CD when it is inserted, but is instead detecting the modem as a (non-functioning) serial port.
Here is the output from /var/log/syslog for the "successful" attempt. Note the disconnection at 4769.479857 which is followed by reconnection as a different device:

I'm trying to trial Ubuntu 10.04 for the first time on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. When I try to create a USB drive, I get a diagnostic message reading that some files are broken. The first time I ignored it and tried to boot Ubuntu from my USB stick anyway, but I couldn't get further than Ubuntu's boot screen. I tried to access the help menu from the boot screen and it said I was missing the kernel (named "casper" something or other).

I installed Redhat Enterprise 3 on one of my servers. In my haste I didn't properly partition both Hard Drives and only properly partitioned one of them. Thus now I have
/dev/sdb1 478711768 137858256 316536328 31% /
/dev/sda1 101089 15346 80524 17% /boot
Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? I have a very important Oracle database on /dev/sdb1 and thus I want to be able to back it up on the second disk. I can create a partition on that drive?

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

I've been trying to fix this problem for quite a few days now and have done a lot of searching on these forums, Linux Mint Forums and some others Google lead me to and have has some success, but am now stuck.I have posted a thread on this same topic on the Linux Mint Forums, but have had no success (if you want check it out at:URL...Originally I received error messages when trying to update involving certain repositories which couldn't be accessed (because they either didn't exist or had been moved) and I hunted these down and changed or removed them.
I have done much searching, etc. and cannot find any broken packages. I have tried many many different commands which have mostly done nothing.I seem to be in a similar boat to this person: URL...

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

Does anyone know why vi text editor would not work. I'm running Ubuntu server with SIP service and apache and when i try to edit config files with vi it gets messy. On the bottom of the screen it would not indicate if I'm in backup mode or not. I won't same changes, and it messes up the layout when you use arrow keys to move between the lines. Also sometimes when I use arrow keys it will insert capital A, B, C or D.

Due to some prior issues which I believe to be self inflicted I decided to wipe my system and start fresh. My fresh install appeared to do the trick for a day or two but after running the update manager recently I found myself in trouble. When starting up I receive the message Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Nothing seems to jog the computer from this black screen except shutting off the power. I've read through some threads of people having similar issues but can't quite figure out what I need to do. I have a Nvidia graphics card which has popped up as a potential problem, too, but not sure if it is my problem or not.
Here is a little history that may or may not be relevant. I'll try to make it brief. My original install was Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala which always worked great. I upgraded to 10.04 Lucid Lynx (through update manager) when it was available and it too worked great until I tried installing a program one day forgetting that I had the update manager running already running as well. The computer didn't seem to like this and never worked well after, thus, leading me to wipe and start fresh. What's odd to me is that I had made a CD for 10.04 from the Ubuntu website as well as the one I had for 9.10 but I could never get it to work when I needed help. I always have to revert back to the Karmic disc when I want boot help. If I put the 10.04 disc in whatever issue I'm having surfaces just the same. Is this because I didn't originally install from that disc?
here is the promised boot script. FYI, I ran it today 2/16/11. I guess the date is incorrect because I'm running the system from the CD.
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

I have a Lenovo W500 ThinkPad. It is running XP on first partition, then Ubuntu. I've tried both 10.10, 11.04 beta 2, and now 11.04 release. With the release I just installed, it seemed OK till reboot-after-install, at which point nothing came up. I rebooted several times and just got errors and kernel panics in the ATI video driver. I also saw a lot of these messages:"udevd[80]: worker [XXX] did not accept message -1 (Connection refused), kill it" URL...
I had download updates on, I'm trying again with a clean install without updates. (Although, I said don't download while installing, and it says it is downloading language packs...?)Now, I also had issues with 10.10, where it would intermittently boot and fail to get video, I'd just be at a tty, and have to reboot and try again. I found it usually got video if I had just booted Windows (XP Pro SP3) beforehand, and not otherwise So what's going on there? Something up with the actual video card? I want to run Gnome anyways, is there a way I can specify that during the install? At any rate, if I can't get 11.04 working properly, I'll have to run 10.10, which I didn't want to do. I'm starting from scratch and wish to start from 11.04 if at all possible.
