Ubuntu :: Backtrack 5 Freezes For No Reason
May 27, 2011
I just downloaded Backtrack 5 and installed it. Had some problems getting the right driver for my gpu but eventually managed to install the right one. At first I thought the problem could be because I didn't have the right gpu driver but its still there. My backtrack freezes when I do anything, for instance I open firefox and browse the internet I can't open command promp or even close firefox with the close butten (alt-F4 does work). I can do 1 thing but then it just freezes and I can only do the thing I was doing. I can still browse but can't do anything else. I have the 64-bit gnome edition.
system specs are:
asus p6t deluxe V2
intel core I7 930 (2.80GHz)
nvidia geforce gtx 470
western digital caviar black 1TB

It happened to me twice- once while browsing with chrome and once with firefox..the system just freezes, the mouse still move but nothing else is clickable.
ctrl+alt+backspace doesnt work,ctrl+alt+f1 does work-takes me to the command line even.
How to find the reason for the freezing? and what to do next?

I'm pinging a certain website and what happens is that each time the ping process freezes for an unknown reason ca. 10-15 sec then it starts to ping. Note that only this particular domain causes this hanging and Ctrl-c seems to have no effect at all! The domain is niteco. So far I've tried several independent linux systems all with the same result however other non-linux systems ping normally.

Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.
Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.
Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).
It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

Ok so I did some stupid stuff and tried to install some of the Backtrack 4 tools. Now when I tried to install VLC player in terminal I get this:"ph@top:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc Reading package lists. Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. My only OS is Ubuntu 10.04. There are no partitions ( that is, I use the entire hard drive for Ubuntu, obviously). I need to run Backtrack for security testing. I've seen lots of various options from running it in virtualbox to running it from a bootable USB but there seem to be problems originating with the grub bootloader. One thing I keep seeing is that the only way to get round all this is to hard drive install Backtrack first and THEN install Ubuntu. Clearly I don't want to have to reinstall my entire world on my pc, play with settings, re-install a billion apps etc.
My question is this - Given that I have 10.04 installed and running alone, how do I get Backtrack installed/running easily and without all the associated disasters? I like the USB option because the thought of screwing the grub up does not appeal; I don't want to reboot my computer and be told "I'm grub and I don't want you to load anything" / Other Annoying Message.Backtrack's site says they didn't provide a USB option so what should I use to burn the ISO (does Unetbootin work for Ubuntu?

This image has been developed and tested on the Motorola Xoom. Your mileage may vary on other devices.
As this image runs in a chroot, you will need to have your device rooted. There are numerous tutorials on the subject online and are not included here.
Rooting your device will potentially void its warranty and we are not in any way resposible if you brick your device while rooting it.
IMPORTANT POINTS:
1. Since the image runs in a chroot, there is no root password set.
2. There are 2 scripts under /usr/bin/ 'startvnc' and 'stopvnc' that are set to start with the Xoom's default resolution.
3. The current vnc password is set to 'toortoor' and can be changed by running 'vncpasswd'
4. This image is a work in progress and suggestions/tips from the community are always welcome.
GETTING STARTED:
1. Once you have downloaded the ARM BT package, save the files in a convenient location. The steps below assume they are in the platform-tools folder of the Android SDK.
2. Go to your platform-tools directory and proceed to make a directory on the device to store BT5:
3. Copy over the busybox install files:
4. Install busybox on the device:
5. Transfer the required BT5 files to the device:
6. Uncompress the image and start BT5:
If all goes well, you'll be in the BT5 chroot:

I'm using 10.10 (updated from 10.04) and from the 10.04 I had problems when the system updated the kernel. After a kernel upgrade I can't boot to my other linux(Backtrack) due to wrong uuids. I must go to /boot/grub/grub.cfg and remove the uid and put /dev/sda5 for example. If I don't edit backtrack loads to busybox. Is there any way to fix that parameteres permantly? Because I don't want to make this change every time.

I'm triple booting Windows 7 32-bit (that's the only version I had), Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Backtrack 4 R1.
Windows 7 installed and runs fine. Ubuntu installed and runs fine. I try to install Backtrack 4 R1, create a / partition, create a /boot partition (do I need to create a /boot for Backtrack?), and I don't create a swap file because the Ubuntu swap file is already in there.
I click "forward", the install starts up, then I get "The attempt to mount a file system with type swap...yadda yadda yadda...has failed." I google this, I get some results talking about an mkswap command, but in my noobness, I don't understand.
Can Ubuntu 64 bit and Backtrack not share a swap file? I don't want to create 2 swap files

Installed XP and ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook and have also installed BT4 r2 on separate partitions. I chose not to install the bootloader for BT4 r2 and used "sudo update-grub2" to locate Backtrack 4 which it has. At boot I can choose both XP and Ubuntu and they will boot fine, how ever when I choose BT4 (listed as ubuntu 8.10) the following message appears:
"zImage does not support 32bit boot"
How can I boot backtrack.

I would consider myself an advanced user of Windows. I know some of the commands used due to my knowledge of PHP. I would like tri-booting Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, BackTrack 4 and Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit. Windows 7 is the main OS involved, which is on a HDD with about 800GB free space, so space isn't a problem. I have BT4 and Ubuntu ISOs downloaded and on DVDs ready to install.
Do I create partitions first in Windows or do I let the installer do it? What sizes would you recommend? What size for the swap partition?
What order should I install the two OS'? I already tried installing both of them, (Ubuntu first then BT4) but BT4 did not show up in grub when booting, even after updating grub through Ubuntu. I also think I make a mistake when installing Ubuntu as I didn't install any packages. I would like to use the gnome desktop environment on Ubuntu but every time I tried to install the package I got the error "package not found". So then I deleted both OS' and restored the MBR.
I'm using a 3G USB modem to connect to the internet. Will both of these distros work with it?

I have a Dell Inspiron mini 10'1". When I close it and reopen it, it almost always freezes. I can't do anything, ctrl alt delete doesn't work, pushing the button doesn't activate it either (I mean Turn on/off button). I have to hold shut down button so it would turn off, I lose everything I was working with, and simply have to start it again. I'm using Windows XP SP3 home edition.

I installed ubuntu 10 yesterday and I have a real frustrating problem. It shuts down for no reason at all, at first I thought it was because I was not using it (power management or maybe because of the screensaver) so configured it to never put it to sleep or shut down, and disabled the screensaver but it keeps happening. This is actually the second time I'm writing this post, because it suddenly shut down again while I was writing this before submitting it. I used to never have this problem before when I was using windows, so the problem must be something with Ubuntu.
Could it be something with my gfx driver? I tried configuring Fluxbox to use my second screen as an extended desktop but couldn't get it to work except with Gnome. If I do "fglrxinfo" I get a segmentation fault, so I messed that up but I'm okay with that because everything is working like I want it with Gnome. One weird thing I've noticed is that ubuntu once said (when booting) that it couldn't find /dev/null...? Should I just try a reinstall? I'm on a quad core with 2GB ram and an ATI HD 4870 2gb graphics card.

My tomboy always ran very fluently until one day I tried the tomboy-image patch. When I tried to resize a big image in my note, tomboy crashed. This was the first time I experienced tomboy crashed. I felt bothered. As a result, I removed the tomboy-image. Later on, sometimes I clicked on a link to another note or when I clicked on a note and then tomboy crashed. It is not very often but bothered me a lot. Especially after I kill the process, I can't reopen it right away. I have to wait a while. I don't know if it relates to the installation of tomboy-image or not? Since I already remove it, how can it still in effect? Or tomboy normally acts not that fluent when the amount of notes become larger? (I have 6xx notes so far).

Last week I installed Zoneminder so I can have some webcam security and I let it run on Mocord (motion detection record) for 24 hours just to see how it worked and run some tests. After that 24 hours I changed it to Monitor so that it wouldn't record anything and wouldn't fill up my 320 gig drive but even after I did that the webcam LED stayed on. Not sure if this is normal, I guess it is since it is still using the webcam, just not recording. I don't think. 2 nights ago I was using it to watch videos online and it was a little slow but was still good enough.
This morning I unplugged it and brought it downstairs to use it but when I opened the lid the hard drive LED was constant and the mouse was all jumpy. Anything I clicked on took a minute to register and the disk utility that I tried loading 2 days earlier looked like it was still loading. I couldn't click anything because the hard drive was running like crazy. Or processor or whatever that light is. So I held the power button, rebooted and nothing on the menu bar was loaded and the hard drive was going crazy again, still couldn't click on anything.
So I rebooted again and this time it gave me a popup before the desktop loaded:
There is a problem with the configuration server.
(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/conf-sanity-check-2 extend with status 256)
So I click Close and it boots to a black background with huge icons and there are obviously no drivers loaded. There's now a new error message:
GConf error: Faield to contact configuration server: the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: GetIOR faield: GDBus.Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 received signal 6)
All further errors shown only on terminal. And then it does nothing, all the menus say KDE. Webcam LED is still on though since Zoneminder runs as a service on Apache. It's a dual core Dell Studio 15 laptop with all the newest updates and I have 3 separate partitions on my install: /, /home, SWAP. My / partition has 2 gigs free according to KDE and my /home partition has 124 gigs free.

Since I installed Ubuntu 11.04 I noticed that my laptop heats up for no reason and the battery life has become shorter, then when I searched for this problem I've found that it's a bug and most probably it's in the Linux kernel itself, so is there any patches, updates or any news about this problem, do they out there even know it exists or what?

What the hell is wrong with 11.04? One day I wake up and find all of my mounts functioning properly, the next day many are missing. I've been running with the same fstab for years. The problem isn't only with cifs shares, but even with internal ext4 shares. I'm so disgusted I'm about to run to Windows after 10 or so years of prompting people to move to Linux.
