I'm having trouble making a back-up of my system through back in time. I use the sudo option because I need to back up my mysql and apache configurations apart from the usual home directories. My back up runs to an external hard drive.
Now every time I run the back up, it takes 45-90 minutes to do its thing but at the end in the left bottom corner comes a message saying that the back-up couldn't be done.
I have tried several things, like making more space in the hard drive, running without sudo but to no avail.
I just insatlled Ubuntu 11.04 64 bits and I've got one big problem. In fact, I tried to install Emerald and it crashed immediatly. Since that I can not have any effects on my computer. I tried
Code: compiz --replace but nothing happened really. I just have a lot of errors I don't understand. Code: Backend : gconf Integration : true
I did a clean install and mounted my user folders/partitions back after removing everything else from the Home drive to ensure no incompatible leftovers from Maverick. Now, I am dissapointed to see that I can't get blur on my transparent windows. This worked like a charm in Maverick and it looked brilliant but now it's often hard to tell windows apart if there are windows below the active one. So I had to turn down transparency... I have D-bus enabled, proprietary drivers installed and I have been Google-searching like crazy to find a solution. None.. Do any of you know the status of this plugin in Natty? Should it work, does it? Or not?I have Focus blur activated and working, it helps but not enough. My videocard is Radeon HD 4650 (AGP).
I have BackInTime backing up my computer to a RAID cluster. The problem is that BackInTime doesn't have an option to limit disk space used. I also use this drive as a fileserver, and need to be able to keep some space open for that.
Is there a way that I can limit the amount of space a specific folder can take up? Alternately, is it possible to create a disk image that will only take up the amount of space in the image, but can automatically expand to a certain size? It would work similar to the Mac SpaseBundle format.
I am running backintime and I keep getting an error: "backintime cant remove folder new_snapshot" when I am backing up to an external hard drive. The hard drive is ntfs if that matters.
I have been using backintime so far. Now I am changing to 64bit and have installed backintime. I received first some kind of warning that the snapshots were converted to some new format. But still I can not do any snapshots with it, I am simply told backintime could not make any backups.
During the past days, I've tried "everything" to get flash working in my fresh Natty 64 Bits install to my Acer Aspire 5745G -laptop. I've read countless of hours through the forums, but none of the tips have helped in my case. Using the latest Firefox and Chromium.
For example, I've downloaded the 64 Bits "libflashplayer.so" from Adobe:[URL].. and put it into: sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins and restarted the browsers, even the entire PC, but still flash doesn't work. What an I doing wrong?
since i upgraded to natty recently the lexmark x2650 stopped printing, the scanning continues to work. I can install the driver which is offered by lexmark, but not print. I am using natty 32bit, and the driver is lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.zip The error output looks like this:
I have spent the last two weekends trying to get Vista and Ubuntu(natty) to work together. From Ubuntu:
- I have disabled ufw
- setup a shared directory at /mnt/public (Permissions on public are 777)
- Ubuntu can access Vista shares.
- From the GUI, the "Network Servers" directory contains a "Windows Network" directory, but the Windows Network is empty.
- I can ping the Vista machine
From Vista:
- Nothing is visible. The ubuntu PC itself is not listed in the "Network" folder or map.
- I have disabled all firewalls (including the router)
- I can ping the ubuntu machine by IP address but cannot access it by IP address through
- "Run" - I enter \192.168.1.50, then get the logon pop-up. I enter the ubuntu creds, then receive a "Windows cannot connect to \192.168.1.50..." error message.
- "Command Prompt" ftp (or sftp) - I get connection refused.
- via "Web Browser" - I get the following message: "It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet." The problem is that it doesn't work.
Everything I have googled up so far has been problems connecting in the opposite direction. I am trying to get to the Ubuntu machine. Although I checked all the smb.conf, inetd.conf and a few other files that I've seen mentioned, I cannot get the Vista machine to connect to the ubuntu machine.
Is there a version of synfigstudio that will work on natty? If so can I get a script to download and install it? If not, can someone suggest an alternative?
I have an old ibm thinkpad R40. I did a fresh install of natty. Cannot get wireless or wired to work. I just want the wireless to work first if possible. So I have no Internet access. Can't upgrade etc. I am a noob and need to be hand held and walked through process.
I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?
I just upgraded to Natty Narwhal. When I first logged in a pop-up dialogue appeared saying that my computer did not fulfil the hardware requirements to run Unity. That cannot be possible this is the output of the lscpu command:

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:
I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?
When I try to hibernate, the computer just goes to a blank, black screen and doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button to get it to shut down, and when I turn it back on none of the programs running before hibernation have been saved.
I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
Problem: permissions for rsync and BackinTime. Setup: Ubuntu 11.04, Two internal HD, #1=main, single boot, #2=backup drive. Question: How do I set up my 2nd HD with correct permissions? Background: I had previously a dual boot XP+10.04 with a 2nd HD formatted as NTFS. With this I was able to use my rsync and backintime to my 2nd HD with no issue. My new set up is EXT4 on both HD.
(I even tried to reformat my 2nd HD as NTFS, but that didnt fix the issue) I followed [URL] to mount the 2nd HD and get permissions. But now when I run backintime i get this error: [E] Error: rsync: opendir "/home/myhome/.ssh" failed: Permission denied (13) I did my requisite reading for a newbie, and am stuck. I ran backintime as root, and it backed up ok. How do I run my user version of backintime? (i.e. How do I fix the permission issue?)
Since upgrading to Natty I have a very annoying issue and since I am unable to resolveWhenever I start the synaptics package manager I get the following message:An error occurred:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.Once I run sudo dpkg --configure -a from the terminal this is what I get:Setting up xulrunner-1.9.1 (1.9.1.18~hg20110309r27352+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1) ...No further progress the machine hangs indefinitely on this, need to kill terminal to exit. Even hours waiting does not show any progress.
I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works. My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.
I just wanted to post here to let anyone know how to fix a broken Mic in 10.04. I have an XPS m1530 and was running RC and updating. This was a big problem since I use Skype a lot to talk to freinds and family out of country.I fixed it by removing and re-installing Alsa but this may not be a problem for people installing from the final release ISO.here are the commands you need to run
My atl gr key often doesnt work. Since I have an azerty lay-out, I often need this key (fi for typing @).
I tested it with xev and got the following output (first one is for a key that does work, fi alt_l and second output for the alt gr key to show the difference)
alt_l KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001, root 0x66, subw 0x0, time 1411517, (-111,434), root570,459), state 0x0, keycode 64 (keysym 0xffe9, Alt_L), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
ssh works fine on root but when i log into my other account, the ssh doesn't work, it just times out when i putty it. I used this to try and start it from terminal in my reg acc, and then as the su.
sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start After that didn't work i did this sudo apt-get remove openssh-server sudo apt-get install openssh-server sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
and still nothing. I have no clue why it only works on root and no other accounts.
