Ubuntu :: Automount USB Or CDROM Failure?

Aug 29, 2010

Situation is that NEITHER Linux Mint 9 NOR Ubuntu Maverick will automount my usb or cdrom? I circumvented by manual mounts thru fstab of my usb stick and usb hard drive. Now I go to burn an iso and find that my cdrom is not detected.
mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 does not do the trick, I cannot burn.
What in the world could I have done to my system ? I think blkid is ok. Win7 burns the iso to cd just fine. All OS on same CPU (grub2). I have done some searches but with minimal success.

OpenSUSE :: CDROM Is Not Showing Up - Not Automount

Dec 13, 2010

I am using Suse since 6.5. I am no linux-expert, just power-user for years (no windows, no MAC OS X) at 3 computers at home and at work.

I just did two bare-bone-installs from up-to-date dvds with opensuse 11.3 at two almost identical Dell Inspirion 6400-Laptops. Clear, flawless installation without any workarounds... Same install at a Dell Desktop Computer without any problems. Automatic updating.

But both Laptops are having problems to read and show inserted data-cdroms. Knowing from the old versions and the new opensuse 11.3 at the desktop-PC what should happen, I have no clue what to do.

It is definitely no technical problem:
- the name of the inserted data-cdrom can be seen in k3b
- inserted dvds are triggering the correct action (!) (suggestions are shown what to do with the dvd; cdrom: no results, no suggestions, just a short and proper working of the cd-device itself can be heart)
- the data-cdrom can be mounted manually

What did not help:
- inserting a data-cdrom as root
- changing the permissions of non-root-users
- several updates of opensuse 11.3
- reading several forums (the answers go into the directions newbee-who-does-not-know-how-openuse-works, wrong-installation, wrong-updating-of-an-old-opensuse-version, geek-how-screwed-up-his-installation-with-manual-wrongdoings => nothing which helps in my situation)

This is my hardware-info about the cdrom/dvd-device:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: How To Automount A Cdrom

Apr 25, 2010

Opensuse 11.2, KDE 4.3.5I have read many articles on this forum & on the web but I am still not able to automount a data CD (I haven't tried audio yet).

I created a directory /media/cdrom
I added my user name to group disk & cdrom.
I added the following line to fstab (my drive is an ide cdwriter):
/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom auto auto,user,rw 0 0

If I put a cd in the drive there is lots of action of the read light but nowhere within KDE that I can find to access the CD. Is it possible that making a change to 'device actions' in 'configure desktop' is what I need to do? If so, what do I enter or change? From terminal the command 'mount' does not show it mounted. At this point I can manually mount the cd.Also note that in YaST it shows up in the hardware list after probing hardware but it does not appear anywhere else in YaST (and I don't know if it is supposed to show up).

Ubuntu Servers :: Creating A Static Cdrom Automount Point?

Mar 14, 2011

I have an Ubuntu server running Samba and I would like to share out the cdrom drive to the network. I made a share of the /media directory and it seems to work fine when I insert USB drives and I am able to browse and work with files. However, when I insert a cdrom it automatically mounts to /media/<volume name> and I get a permission denied error when I attempt to access it over the network. I am assuming this is happening because the permissions do not include the execute bit and being a read only file system I can not change this. I made the directory /media/cdrom and manually mounted the cdrom to it and I can successfully access it over the network just like the USB drives. So my question is: Is there a way to make the cdrom automatically mount and unmount to /media/cdrom when I insert and eject disks instead of to /media/<volume name>? Or maybe just have the permissions automatically set so Samba users can open it instead of just see it.

General :: Xubuntu 9.10 Fresh Install - USB Automount Failure

I just recently installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my old acer Aspire 3000. Previously I was running Debian 5. Something it was great and all but I wanted to try out the "New Hotness" that is Xubuntu. The install went flawless and as far as Linux distro's go this is by far the most impressive. However, I have this problem with my USB storage devices not mounting. When I plug them in they show up and everything looks like its about to work when I get this: [URL]
A quick jaunt over to dmesg:

Code:

#
[ 2950.326519] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
#
[ 2955.324403] usb-storage: device scan complete .....

I've been all over google, in multiple irc rooms asking questions, and I cant seem to get anywhere. I can mount the devices manually with mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mountpoint. They mount themselves when I plug them in.

Hardware :: DVD Automount Fails With "CDROM Not Ready Yet" And "unaligned Transfer"

Nov 18, 2009

Recently my Kubuntu Jaunty installation has taken to not mounting previously OK DVDs.

What I see upon insertion of a disc is the automount fail:

This persists across discs and across reboots.

I looked around the net and I at least found some evidence of the "unaligned transfer" problem; supposedly this happens when something tries to access the drive before it's ready, and (at least for some kernels) can get the responsible module in a permanently confused state. However, I'm not accessing the disc manually, some automounter or something is accessing it -- I don't even know what.

I'm using Kubuntu Jaunty with KDE 4.3.2. Kernel string from bootup:

General :: Mounting A CDROM In Ubuntu?

Apr 14, 2011

I'm using a software that needs to read data from a cdrom. The instructions say to mount the cdrom (mount /mnt/cdrom). I understand that I need to mount the cdrom to /mnt/cdrom. I created a folder "cdrom" under "mnt". Then I tried to mount the cdrom by typing:

sudo mount /media/ /mnt/cdrom/ This didn't work. Under "media" I have another folder with the actual cd content so I tried to mount it too, but again with no success. I keep getting an error that "media is not a block device". What I am doing wrong?

Ubuntu :: Executing EXE Files From A CDRom?

I cannot seem to find what I need to in either these forums, Ubuntu help, or various Man pages.Issue:When I insert a CD it automounts correctly, but I cannot Use the "Open with Wine" option (even after configuring wine to recognize the executable) due to a "trust" issue within Ubuntu. I have learned that this "trust" is simply the executable bit, but I obviously cannot change that bit on a read only medium. he software requires the CD at both install and run time, so I cannot use a separately mounted ISO.Somewhere there must be a setting where I can turn off the "require trust flag" which I assume must exist.

Ubuntu :: Extracting Archive From Cdrom

Jul 31, 2010

I am trying to install MySQL, Apache, and PHP onto my Linux Ubuntu laptop from a cdrom that I got from a teach yourself MySQL, Apache, and PHP book I bought. First off there were two steps which i think i did right. The first was to mount the CD-ROM under /mnt in my file system which i did and there seems to be no problem except for the reply "mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only"

now first of all there are two things I need to explain, first of all I was superuser for all of this by using the command su at the beginning of my terminal session. Second of all the symbol "|" on my line of code above looks different from the symbol in the book. It should have a small space in the middle of it. However it looks like this on my keyboard so I am assuming it is simply a difference in text font. That is it, it would be really nice to figure out what went wrong because to be honest I am curious as to why the book is giving me code that gives multiple errors.

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Can't Fetch Cdrom?

Jul 21, 2010

I'm attempting to install Lucid on a new Acer Timeline X 5820T and having a tons of problems.

First of, I've got no internet connection either wired or wirelessly.

I've found several posts claiming that the ethernet card just needs a driver installed to work correctly.

However, to make the driver I need build essential installed, but no problem, I've got my CD, I'll just install them from the CD.

However, when I attempt to install them through synanptic it tells me that it:

Code:
Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 10.04 LTS_Lucid_Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100429)]/pool/main/p/patch_2.6-2ubuntu1_i386.deb

File not found why it can't fetch the cdrom? Ubuntu recognizes it and I can browse it just fine.

I managed to boot from hard disk, everything works ok. But Gparted has a bug, it works in Live Hard Disk, but not when I click the install icon because it can't umount /cdrom. But I solved that by formatting ext4 and swap area from gnome-panel Live Hard Disk and only put mount point / after click on install. But problem stroked back: install is not possible because it wants to umount itself before installing, wich cannot be possible. I'm installing it in a new place /dev/sda5. Live Hard Disk is booting from /dev/sda3.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ df -h | grep sda
