Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount Cdrom As Regular User
May 17, 2010I have a problem to mount my cdrom as a regular user. After inserting a cd, I receive this error message:"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:mount: must be superuser to use mount" After mounting the cdrom as superuser with "sudo mount /media/cdrom".I can access the cd also as regular user. This behavior is inconvenient and I would like to be able to mount the cdrom as user.Honestly, I do not have the experience to tell if this should be fine or not. Do you have any advice for me to fix this problem? I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with a 2.6.32-02063209-generic kernel.

Sep 12, 2010I accidentally deleted my mahjongg game from ubuntu 10.04.Now when iam trying to install it from software center or synaptic, half way through it's asking for ubuntu cd.Eventhough i insert the original ubuntu 10.04 cd,it's not taking it.it keeps asking for the cd.It is same whenever i try to install any more game from synaptic or software center.

Oct 11, 2010I have a Dell Mini 9 with 10.10 Netbook Edition. In the new Unity/Mutter interface, I'm unable to pin any application to the launcher. I want to do this for google chrome. Instead of getting the 'add to launcher' option on the right click menu, I get this (see attached screenshot). Why is it like this? Is there a utility or manual way of adding it to the launcher?

Dec 6, 2010I was playing an online game and my netbook, previously running XP, somehow got a virus. The next morning when I turned on my netbook, the screen showed the normal Toshiba BIOS screen, and then went black, only showing a blinking white cursor in the top left corner of the screen.
Right now I'm on my netbook running on a thumb with 10.10 on it. When I try to install 10.10, after rebooting (and setting the BIOS settings back to the hard drive instead of the thumb), the screen goes black like before. If I boot from the thumb drive though and instead of installing, I select the "try ubuntu" option, I'm able to run my netbook as I am now. In the top left corner I have the "install ubuntu-netbook 10.10" option available.
I ran the boot info script and here's what I've got:

I just could not get my head around one issue with the Firefox 3.6.6. For some strange reasons I just could not download and install Firefox add-ons or themes. I would click on the button "Add to Firefox". The download window with the progress bar would appear. The progress bar would get stuck at 0% with the message "waiting". After 30 secs or so, this error message would appear:
Firefox could not install the file at [url]
Because: Download error-228

Nov 5, 2010On a Lenovo thinkpad S12 2959 and a kingston DataTraveler 101 OK I have been having a lot of strange issues while trying to install the current 10.10 netbook version of Ubuntu.I followed the instructions right below the download for the iso.Basically download the usb live creator and use it.So I did (with no persistence set) and it seemed to work.I tried booting from it and it worked, except that I have to keep pressing keys, I used the enter key and it worked.If I stop pressing enter no progress is made.Then at the end their is some error about no persistent space being available.
and now it is booted, so I try to install a driver and it hangs.so I try to install the OS, and it hangs.So I try to exit and it finally gets to the next screen in the installation after I tell it to exit, but then hangs when trying to get the the next one and it will not continue.

May 6, 2011setting up a netbook's wireless access point (to allow remote connection to a network drive connected to the netbook). I know this sounds daft but there is a reason.I just switched workplace and have all my projects on one drive.However my new workplace's network only assigns ip to certain Mac addresses. So I can't just plug in the network drive.My new work desktop is MS loaded, warranty sticker sealed and shared so I can't change this.Well I will, but not in the first week.
The simplest solution I thought of was to bring in my ubuntu netbook connect this to the network drive and wirelessly connect the netbook to the new desktop this via a wireless USB dongle.I connected the netbook to the network drive with no problem using the wired card. I done this by adding

For the wireless bit, on the netbook, I right clicked on the network indicator icon and selected "Create New Wireless network" then entered a network name and WEP passphase.Over to the desktop (XP). I plugged in a wireless dongle, get it load the driver then selected my new network and entered the passphrase. It came up connected and sure enough I check and it got assigned a sensible IP.
All seemed well and I even connected my android phone with no issues. The phone and desktop can ping each other. However for some reason I can't actually ping or ssh to or from the netbook.So whilst it's happily providing the wireless network it can't use it itself.
p.s. Incidentally I am allowed to plug in USB drives so this isn't an access issue or me trying to sneakily circumvent rules. I even told my IT department about the wireless dongle plan.

Feb 17, 2011Since next launch will have Unity desktop, I decided to install the netbook and available unity edition for 10.10, but my experience has been less than pleasant. :-/ I'll post a few comments about my worries, perhaps you know how to solve them already. The left bar is nice: but so far I've been unable to customize it! Not intelhidding, nor control over the size. The pick into the dock problem has already solve for unity but not for Netbook. Personally, I rather prefer a docky panel instead of an un-customizable bar.
Mension by a lot of people, the <Alt>-F1 and <Alt>-F2 binding are not working. I've never used <Alt>-F1 but <Alt>-F2 is quite useful for the intermediate or advance user. The Super-key: In netbook desktop somehow I loved that the super-key allows us to select a launcher from the bar. However this functionality is not in Unity. Worse, each time I press super-key, it sends me to the menu... How could I use the compiz functions so? like Super-a My compiz-configuration from Gnome is used by Unity... so when I press the show desktops I can see only one. How do I get 4 of them? I really, really love the fact that in the upper bar are shown the menu of the current selected window, specially because one can un-maximize the window and the menu remains in the panel. Perhaps the upper border of the graphical windows could be made thiner.. since there is no menu there any more!
I think this is mostly it! Anyway... I'll keep in touch Although all my possible negative comment, I think you have done a remarkable work with this environment... but we all know that mind breaking changes should support crisis! Don't they?!

May 15, 2010I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook. Everytime I try to "burn" the live 11.2 GNOME CD to an USB drive (1GB) it fails on boot. I've tried unetbootin, the application from pendrivelinux.com as well. When it boots, it usually can't find the image. So I have to type in the name of the image by hand then press enter. I actually type the below in:
boot: openSUSE_Linux_(GNOME)
So it starts loading the image in text mode. I don't mind this, except it stops when it tries probing for the CD/DVD ROM.
rebootException failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive
It just stops pass there. I've tried to add in the options acpi=off, but do I add it in before or after I enter in the image name? BTW, it doesn't boot in my laptop either.

Apr 19, 2010Long, sad story made short. I have a Samsung Netbook running Windows XP Home, SP3. I set it up to dual boot with Ubuntu, just so I could play around with Ubuntu. Well, Ubuntu started giving me trouble: my internet connection went south, I was unable to adjust the brightness of the Netbook screen, etc., and when I looked for troubleshooting help on the internet, it was all Greek to me as it involved working with Terminal.
I did a search for removing a partition in Windows XP and found "How to use Disk Management to configure basic disks in Windows XP" on the Microsoft and followed the instructions there.

Apr 30, 2010I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?
