I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.I'm looking for a panel applet that will act much like the Application/Places menu but only includes my few favorite directories preferably with submenu ability and icon settings.

My main PC isn't playing nice with my ipod, and of all the music software out there, I enjoy songbird the most.I dig its clean lines and iTunes-esque file management. Now of course comes the question.I connected my ipod to my computer, and it doesn't show up on Songbird. There's no add-on for ipod device support either. What gives? Is there anyway to combine my favorite MP3 player and my favorite multimedia software into one delicious sushi roll?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI used about all available OS 's. In all systems I used a quick acces system like the file browser applet in Ubuntu. In fact I "cannot live without", specially if I am working on jobs and I have to work with a lot of files in different directories. Opening lots of folders and endless clicking is really not an option to me. Does anyone know if there is such an applet or possibility in Unity (because gnome 2 applets will not work in Natty)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have it set right now to be open so that there's no need to type in username and password information. It works great. I can type \*IP Address* on my WinXP laptop while on the network, and it brings me to the Public folder that I'm trying to share. But, when I click on the folder to open it up, it just sits there and eventually will give a userid/password prompt or will give me an access denied error.
Here is my smb.conf:

I use Konqueror for file browsing on my Slackware 13.1 box. When I click on a directory, it is opened in a new Konqueror window, I want it to open in the same window. I have looked at:
Settings->Configure Konqueror->File Management->Open folders in separate windows check box.
The check box is not checked, yet the directories still open in a new window. I tried checking it, there was no change.
I am in a class called Linux System Administration and we are setting up Fedora 8 as a server. Per the class instructions, I have changed the default runlevel to 3 so the system always boots to a command line. The instructions say log in with your regular user account [I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS] and use the startx command to load GNOME. [I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THIS]
I searched the Internet and the text book, but found nothing I could understand.
I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.
I installed Sbackup from synaptic.Now I am wondering if there are better backup programs for Ubuntu(I did read favorite backup solution poll in "find similar threads).I just need something very basic. I plan on doing thr backups manually about once per week, so I don't need anything too fancy or with too many options. What's your favorite? (tar doenn't count).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Slackware 13.1 and want do some work with a MySQL database. I've used SQL Navigator at work for a few years and want something similar for home. Maybe I've become spoiled but a good SQL editor is just as useful as a good IDE in my opinion.I tried to install MySQL workbench but there are some dependencies on GNOME that got in the way. I tried SQuirreL because it's written in java but wasn't too impressed, and couldn't get it to stop auto-committing (that could really cause a bad situation). RazorSQL looks nice but I don't want to anty up for the $70 license fee.
What are your favorite SQL editors for use on Slackware, and how do you use them?Also, if there is anyone who has successfully installed MySQL workbench on Slackware 13.1.
I use network manager applet 0.7.1. I had set the automatic wireless connection to my my wireless network (WPA key secured). Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. As I don't know what it is to type it and then, deny or OK, it doesn't get connected to my wireless network.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi am in need of linux help. iam at college and i need this back/restore script to pass this final part of an assessment. i require a backup script that will not only backup but also restore files to the relevent directories. e.g. users are instructed to store all wordprocessor files in a directory named wp. so i am needing to create a backup directory and 3 directories within that and some files within the 3 directories and then back them up ot restore them. l know i should/have to do this myself by been trying to get/understand info for the last few days and came up with zero.

Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to make a webserver with multiple users allowed to login through SFTP to a specific folder, www.Multiple users are added, lets say user1 and user2, and all of them belonging to the www-data group. The www directory has an owner www-data and a group www-data.
I have used chmod -R 775 on the www folder, but after I try to create a folder test through my SFTP server (using Filezilla) the group of the directory created has only r and x permissions, and I am not able to log in with the second user user2 and create a directory within www/test due to a lack of w permission to the group.
I also tried using chmod 2775 on www directory, but without luck. Can somebody explain to me, how can I make it so that a newly created directory inherits the root directory group permissions?
What is everyone's favorite screenshot programs? I really don't like the gnome one. A timer feature is very important to me and the gnome one doesn't have it.

Currently it is running ubuntu because unity is lighter than gnome 3, but I am planning to go back to fedora at some point in time. 2- .txt files
