Ubuntu Multimedia :: Anyway To Combine Favorite MP3 Player / Favorite Multimedia Software Into Sushi Roll?

Apr 13, 2010

Ubuntu convert for 1 year and counting and loving it more and more every day. My main PC isn't playing nice with my ipod, and of all the music software out there, I enjoy songbird the most.I dig its clean lines and iTunes-esque file management. Now of course comes the question.I connected my ipod to my computer, and it doesn't show up on Songbird. There's no add-on for ipod device support either. What gives? Is there anyway to combine my favorite MP3 player and my favorite multimedia software into one delicious sushi roll?

Ubuntu :: Mount Seems To Create An Additional Folder?

Feb 19, 2011

I am trying to mount the device sdb in the folder /mirror so I issue the command dmd@dolly:/$ sudo mount /dev/sdb mirror. I would now expect to see the contents of sdb in /mirror but instead of mounting in /mirror it is being mounted in /mirror/mirror and the second mirror folder is created during the mount

dmd@dolly:/mirror$ ls - returns no results

I then say dmd@dolly:/$ sudo mount /dev/sdb mirror and look for my mounted files in /mirror and I see this

dmd@dolly:/$ cd mirror
dmd@dolly:/mirror$ ls
lost+found mirror (an additional mirror folder)

mount says

/dev/sdb on /mirror type ext4 (rw)

I'm sure I'm just doing something goofy or otherwise have screwed things up but I've tried this several times with re-boots in the middle and wherever I choose to mount sdb it ends up being mounted one level lower in a folder of the same name.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Print Preview Does Not Create Additional Pages When Needed?

Feb 17, 2010

There is the option to select a "printable form", but the form is much larger than any paper the printer supportsIf I use "Print Preview" in Firefox, it creates only one page that contains the beginning of the form, and ignores the rest of the form.If I do the exact same thing on a Windows machine, Firefox creates as many pages as necessary when I click "Print Preview"I feel that this problem is not because of Firefox, but because of how "Print Preview" works on Ubuntu. How can I get the print preview to create additional pages to include the entire text when I click "Print Preview" ?

Fedora Installation :: Installing Additional Programs To A USB?

Oct 14, 2009

I have a laptop that I want to dual boot winxp and linux. I'd like to be able to run a mythtv frontend on it so that I can watch shows in my office and not lose the screen space on my regular desktop. I was thinking of three possible directions to go. I have a question to go with each though.

1.) This machine has an existing winxp install that I don't want to mess up, but is there something on a Fedora live cd that I could use to smashing that winxp install into a smaller space and repartitioning the drive? If so, I could just do an old fashion dual boot from the harddrive.

2.) I put a live install on a usb drive. If I do that, how do I install mythfrontend and make it persistant on the usb drive?

3.) I treat a usb drive like a regular hard drive and just do a normal fedora install, assuming the install sees the usb drive as a sd? device. I guess I don't have a question with this option, but I would rather avoid it since it will take a lot more space on the usb drive.

Fedora Installation :: Install Additional Packages From DVD?

Jun 17, 2010

I've installed Fedora from the Live CD (Fedora 13). The Installation Guide says that if you install from the DVD (or, as I understand it, the five or so CDs) you get the choice of installing lots more software. I've now got a copy of the CD. But how do I use it to install the extra software it contains? The Installation Guide says use the Add/Remove Software tool. But that tries to download stuff from the Internet. Nothing about installing from the DVD.

Fedora Installation :: Additional Firmware Required Killed F12?

Nov 22, 2009

While doing some basic tweaks, nautilus, panel, display etc I got a pop-up: Additional Firmware Required "to make hardware in this computer function correctly". No more detail than that. Like signing a blank check so I said "go for it". When I rebooted the display was hosed. Like the refresh rate was wrong. So off to xorg.conf to fix it. There is no xorg.conf. After four hours of searching forums and google I gave up and reinstalled (only an hour). This time I made a backup (cp -a) before letting F12 fix the non-existent problem. Tried again very carefully to be sure that what killed the display was the additional firmware. True. That kills my display. Only problem is the backup cp -a when copied back in would boot but would not let me log in!? I could boot "single" change the password, but it said that was already the password.

for me F12 is a "one-day-distro". I have multiple partitions with Ubuntu, Mandriva, SuSE, Slitaz ... My first Linux was Fedora Core 4 and I will try the next Fedora release. For now back to Ubuntu 9.04. I'm still testing 9.10. My graphics is on-board Intel. I think it's 965G chipset. This is a Dell E520N. How would I tell what not to do that firmware addition?

Slackware :: What's Your Favorite SQL Editor?

Nov 3, 2010

I've recently installed Slackware 13.1 and want do some work with a MySQL database. I've used SQL Navigator at work for a few years and want something similar for home. Maybe I've become spoiled but a good SQL editor is just as useful as a good IDE in my opinion.I tried to install MySQL workbench but there are some dependencies on GNOME that got in the way. I tried SQuirreL because it's written in java but wasn't too impressed, and couldn't get it to stop auto-committing (that could really cause a bad situation). RazorSQL looks nice but I don't want to anty up for the $70 license fee.

What are your favorite SQL editors for use on Slackware, and how do you use them? Also, if there is anyone who has successfully installed MySQL workbench on Slackware 13.1.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Install Additional 32bit Openssl From Source On F10?

Mar 11, 2009

I need to run a proprietary VPN client (Aventail) that can't use the openssl libraries that are packaged with 64bit F10:The Fedora openssl package does something differently from the original openssl.org package that makes it incompatible with Aventail (see bugzilla ticket 477073) I also believe the Aventail client software requires 32-bit libraries. So, I've determined I need to install 32bit openssl directly from openssl.org, then link my Aventail client to that. Note that I don't want to replace the 64bit openssl libraries currently on my system.

Based on the Bugzilla ticket, I believe I know how to hook up Aventail before I install it simply by supplying a few specific soft links if I can make/compile/whatever the 32bit openssl.org libraries and keep them in their own isolated directory. how to get the 32bit openssl libraries installed in a little corner by themselves on my 64bit system. give a step-by-step on on the commands necessary to place a 32bit version of openssl all by itself in a directory of my choosing?

Fedora Installation :: Editing Partions For Additional Hard Disks?

Apr 30, 2009

I have three hard disks in my PC , hda is used for /, /home, /boot and swap. Everything seems to setup fine here I then have partitions sdb1 and sdc1. On the edit partion options for these hard drives I can set the mount point. I have never seen this before with the other distros I have used and usually have to mess around with fstab after install to mount these disks, so was pleased to see this option.

Under my previous install (Debian, which I didn't use for long) I had these drives mounted under /media/store1 and /media/store2. This is reflected in the "Edit Parition: /dev/s***" options where the "Original File System Label" is shown as store1 and store2 for each disk

[Code]...

Slackware :: When I Used Arch Linux, One Of Favorite Stops At The Forums Was The Community Contributions Section?

Feb 3, 2010

One thing that really bothers me about Slackware is the lack of unified, well maintained, and up-to-date documentation, but what keeps me coming back is the outstanding community. I see a lot of community contributions floating around on these forums, but they often get buried in all the questions and other posts people create. I know there's a search feature, but sometimes it's fun to browse an organized list of the community's work and see if I find anything fun or interesting.

Back when I used Arch Linux, one of my favorite stops at the forums was the Community Contributions section. The FreeBSD forums also have a section for user-contributed HOWTOse should have a section like this. Call it "Contributions" and place it by the "Installation" section at the top of this forum. It would provide a great place for users to check out what the other slackers have come up with without making a thread of their own to ask (which will probably result in many duplicate threads) or digging up an ancient thread. The only new threads allowed there could be a HOWTO, a new process or method a user discovered, or a user-made script/program/etc. Of course, other users should be able to comment with their replies for suggestions and/or improvements.
