Is there a way I can allow all users to mount internal media without entering a password, without using sudo, and without making edits to my /etc/fstab file.
View 9 RepliesMy hard drive is partitioned in 12 partitions (for various reasons) anyways I am having two issues when I mount my data partition. Firstly I can only write/edit files on the partition when I am under root. Second when it mounts it uses the drive's UUID as the mount name in /media (so it is horribly long!) is there a way I can force it to mount under a different name? I tried right clicking on the drive like I am able to do in Ubuntu and set a "mount point" but Fedora does not have this option.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu on an old dell. I have the OS installed on an 80GB HD and I have a 500GB drive in the computer as a storage drive. I can see the drive and read and write to it just fine. But before I can I have to mount it and provide my password. Is there a way to set it so that it's already mounted and ready when I start up the computer? The drive is formatted to FAT32 I'm using Ubuntu 9.10
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. When I try to mount the drive I get this error message: "Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/data" What have I done wrong and how can I make it mount again? Preferably this time at login.
I want my usb disks to automount in /media as usual, but I don't want the internal partitions to be mounted there. The internal partitions are my business, and I'd like to install it ONLY where I want. I can disable the automount, but then the usb disks will not mount.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used the ntfs-config utility to mount my windows drives automatically at startup. While doing so, I had my USB-HDD still attached, and after making changes and rebooting, it did something unknown I didn't expect and I cannot mount my USB-HDD again, and it gives me the following error message:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/MyUSBDrive
I did manage to open it somehow, but then all the data was erased apart from ~3 GiB [edit: it's got some kind of extra drive built-in which is mounted as a CD-ROM drive, and when I open that one first all the files are missing in the actual drive, otherwise I get the message above]. I don't know what information I should include here, but my fstab looks like this:

Just moved to Ubuntu from XP. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.
It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.
I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).
I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.

I have a firewall/router box running openSUSE 11.2 between the outside world and the LAN. This router also provides DNS for the LAN and has SuSEfirewall enabled. LAN users need (almost) full access to the internet. However, I want to block certain sites which are not required for work (you name it: facebook is my candidate). What is the most elegant way to block certain sites (which have quite a lot of different IP numbers) ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded Xubuntu from 10.04 LTS to 11.04 and I am no longer able to mount removable media from the "places" menu. The message I get:
"Failed to execute child process exo-mount (No such file or directory)"
I assume some wrapper process is attempting to execute a program called "exo-mount," but no such program exists anywhere in the repositories, according to a search with apt-file. The "exo-utils" package used to contain exo-mount, but the program no longer exists in that package.
Mounting from within Thunar works fine.

I've just made the switch from Ubuntu to Debian Squeeze and am having trouble connecting external media (be it a USB stick or an ext HD). The error I am getting when I connect anything via usb is the following:

I run a system that users may log into either remotely or physically. Multiple users may be logged in simultaneously because of the remote access, but only one user can be physically logged in at a time.With the current setup, however, if the physical user inserts a flash drive (which the OS mounts automatically) then the remote users gain access to the removable media.

as far is i understand now i need a hal/dbus client
gnome-volumen-manager seems to be one
apt-get install gnome-volume-manager
now im stuck there is no such executable like gnome-volumen-manager thus, how does it work? how can i start it? how do i know if and why the .fdi script works or fails?
since its a server edition and its purpose should be a very minimized server install i dont want a GUI like gnome fully installed
I can't mount it, and also since apparently debian doesn't care about the nasty systemd but I had to deal with that but I digress.
I cannot mount my itnernal drive, and even memory cards are listed as "permission denied" even though I am part of the disks group. I know that before systemd I could just edit a udisks config file but I cannot find out where it'd even be.

I am part of the disks group, and am 90% sure that I edited the udisks file that says something about mount internal disk to allow active from allow_admin
The only udev rules that i've changed was the one to change the mount point for external drives to /media/drive_label instead of /media/$username/drive_label
Basically I'm trying to automount the partition after clicking on it in the file manager.
FC11 had "Authorization" choice in System > Preferences menu that we could change setting of system. but in Fedora 12 I don't have Authorization choice in menus. Now, how I can change setting of system? for example? Mount internal disk automatically!
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just loaded Vector Linux on my computer (it's a Pentium 4/2ghz my father-in-law gave us). It seems to be working well, however, I have a second hard drive in addition to the boot drive. This drive is from a previous computer that ran Mandriva Linux, so I would imagive VL can read it. I can't seem to locate it anywhere using the gui. However, I checked the system settings window under "storage" and the drive shows up. It doesn't show up in the "devices" area of the system tray. I don't think I can navigate to the drive using the "file system" window either..Is there something I can do to -- one, find the drive; and two, add the drive to the devices window so I can mount it when I need to (or, preferably, keep it permantly mounted -- like on a mac or windows computer)?By the way, the drive was the boot drive for the Mandriva computer, but the jumper is currently set to "slave."

sudo lshw -C dis
does not mention and CD or DVD device. This happend after instaling VirtualBox Guest Addons.
I have two systems, one running 11.2 x64, and the other running 11.3 x64. on both systems, I've lost the ability to mount internal partitions "on-the-fly" from the Dolphin panel.Trying to mount via Dolphin has always given me this error on the 11.3 system, but only recently started happening in the 11.2 system after a recent "zypper dup" (using the "Stable" KDE 4.4 repo).If others are experiencing this same issue, please let me know so I can file a bug report. Please note that the error only occurs for internal partitions, and external drives work fine.

I have an internal hard drive which is NTFS that I have some of my windows stuff on.Ubuntu seems to mount it only after I choose to open it from the places menu.I would love it if it mounted automatically on startup but I can't work out how to do this

*Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout
*The "Encrypt system" option

In Gnome desktop, when I right click and select mount volume, it will display : "Unable to mount location. Internal error: No mount object for mounted volume"
I have a bad mount point, I had some mounting problems before, and made this wrong entry, when I mount the volume it works but then the system tells me the hard drive is empty, which is wrong and some kind of error.
My problem here is pretty simple, this point is in /media, but it disappears when the volume is unmounted. I want to delete it and re-mount using the storage device manager, which hopefully will solve the problem.
So how can I delete this entry when it disappears? I don't really want to delete it while the volume is attached and mounted.
is it possible with mount to do the same as RAID X to make all my wisht harddrives combine into a single folder so i dont run outa space on 1 but on all 3 when theres no more space

I need to be able to capture a users password when they login. I am well aware of the security issues with this and I'm ok with this.
We run a call center and I am working on migrating from windows to Kubuntu for the callers. It's policy that all callers must report their password to me, so I already know of everyone's password. There has to be some variable/script that I can "hack" to get the password they typed in to the login screen.
What I'm trying to do is that when a user logs in in for the first time, their profile is automatically created and set up. Setting up network drives, email, pidgin (which the password is stored in plain text anyway, so forget about security on that one), web apps, etc.
Trying to find information on How to capture a users password and all have been responded with the usual lecture on why you shouldn't do this. So I've heard it all before and I know of the risks. Like I said, I already have the callers password on file. If I could capture it, I wouldn't have to manually setup each profile every time we get a new caller, which is often since turnover is quite high in call centers.
