How can I edit the system proxy setting using the terminal? Which file contains this settings? I want to edit this automatically using cronjobs, cause from 8-5 I need to use a proxy, but at home I don't need the proxy. How do I fix this?

How can I make terminal applications immune to terminal emulator close, but still able to use all virtual terminal features?
egin{UPDATE}I want my terminal application remain alive and accessible if I accidentally close terminal emulator. This functionality is provided by screen and tmux, but they have issues with colors and they flush screen.Yes,I can run the shell inside screen, but I do not want the shell remain alive unless there is some other program running.
end{UPDATE}I see this must be something like screen, but without VT100 terminal emulation, something which will just apply whatever application does with "terminal proxy"'s terminal (like outputting something to stdout/stderr or using stty to set terminal options) to the terminal this proxy runs in.
// I know about screen and altscreen on, but it makes either this (screen with TERM=screen):
or this (screen with TERM=rxvt-unicode):
while I want this (rxvt-unicode without screen):
I have figured out that everything looks fine if I compile rxvt-unicode with USE=-xterm-color (in fact vim looks like on the second picture even without screen if I add this USE flag) and set TERM=screen-256color, but I do not like this workaround because it actually changes colors and I can't be sure that it will always change them only this way:

I want to add users from the command line, I know I can use the adduser for individual users, but if you have 50 or more there must be another way. I'd rather not use the GUI.

Using the same in terminal like below,
export http_proxy=http://proxyconf/proxy.pac
I am not able to download stuff with say wget. Example terminal output below.
wget -c http://fi.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...0.15-3_all.deb

How I make the terminal to use the proxy.pac script rather than just proxyconf?

Anyone know how to add the capability to right-click on the desktop in Fedora 15 to get the terminal? I googled it and there was an article which said to install gnome-tweak-tool and use the file manager. So I did, but right click does exactly nothing.

I need to set up network proxy for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (system->prefernces->network proxy)? In fact I can connect to internet using a modem without worrying about it but will it be better if I do? In firefox, should I edit proxy setting? the options are: no proxy, auto detect proxy, use system proxy, manual proxy, and there are severl proxies like HTTP proxy etc. Does proxy setting has anything to do with security?

Yhe only ptoblem was that he had forgotten the password to his network. This was really anoying and has happened before sp yesterday i decided to install some kind of WEP cracking tool so that it would not happen anymore.. After using sometime without getting anything to work i found this tutorial: [URL]
and started following it. i only got to the point where he has updated his computer using update manager and is about to patch his wificard. Then i noticed that the network manager for gnome was gone and the virtualbox logo in my top panel was changed to a red circle with a line running through it. I have tried to download network manager from another computer and installing it on my laptop but it needs internet to install. Then i tried to connect to my local network using terminal that did't work either i also tried connecting using a cable but had no luck connecting. The command iwconfig gives me:

I've switched to a new motherboard, an Asus P6T SE one, and now I don't have any cable connections in Networkmanager anymore.
I see the new card when I run "ifconfig", it's called "eth2", but I have no idea where to go from here without messing up networkmanager.

I would like Windows laptops to use a proxy to connect to the network so I can check network activity and see if any malware is trying to connect and where it is trying to connect to. So on my Ubuntu desktop I would like to install something as simple as possible to be used as a proxy, I've seen squid but does that only handle http requests? Does that handle streaming requests and such as well? This so I can see the source of some media that's being played in flash or pps.tv

I think there is an application which lets you set the proxy settings for all applications. I remember seeing something like this in Gnome's network menu but now I'm using XFCE.

I've just installed OpenSuse 11.2 64-bit and, on the whole, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm connected to the network and I am posting this from my new system. However I cannot get any software updates or install new packages
I'm behind a (non-authenticated) proxy and, obviously, Firefox has no problem.
If I use Online Updater I just get error messages like this:
PackageKit Error repo-not-available: Failed to download ./repodata/primary.xml.gz from Index of /update/11.2
(but the site is available in Firefox).
I have tried manual updates through Yast (after setting the proxy) and get pretty much the same thing.
So far I have set the proxy in:
Firefox
/etc/sysconfig/proxy
/etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf
Computer -> Yast -> Network Services -> Proxy (That has a test function which confirms it is working).
Applications -> System Settings -> Network Settings (This tells me that the network settings are controlled by NetworkManager and can't be modified by Yast).
[Code].....

I have Ubuntu Server 9.10 up and running as my file server. However, it sits amongst other PCs running XP Pro and Network Printers (e.g. Xerox Docuprint C2535A) on the network. My question is whether there is a way of adding the Xerox printer to the Ubuntu Server so that other PCs will send print jobs through the server. I think the printer is windows-based printer. Is it possible to do this? or are there any other options that you may be able to share with me?

Well this is what I am trying to do:
I have a home network with 5 pcs that have Windows XP. I have another computer that has Ubuntu 9.04 server, Squid, and Dansguardian.
The proxy server is able to monitor and report all websites that have been visited. The report is sorted by the ip address from each of the windows pcs.
This is my question:
Is there some software that can be installed on the proxy server that will act as a keylogger...monitoring the keystrokes that are being typed in on the Windows pcs and then generate a report, sorted by ip address, of the keystrokes for each of the windows pcs.
I know that I can install a keylogger on each pc, but I think that it would be better if it was on the proxy server monitoring all the computers.

I need to have Opensuse 11.2 use my proxy server here in the office and it is by hostname/ip:8080 only not HTTP. The problem is using Yast2 I don't have the option of using the proxy that way it wants http. I've been using opensuse on and off since 9 (great flavor BTW my favorite) Easy as you need it to be and just as complicated as you want it to be, a perfect mix.

The proxy I set is not being used or recognized by some apps. For instance dropbox would be able to detect the proxy settings i set using yast>network>proxy while firefox would not recognize it. In firefox i tried using the automatic proxy and using the system proxy. Either of the two won't detect it. However, when I manually set it in firefox's preference it would work. For empathy the proxy is not recognized as well. In addition, can I set the proxy in the empathy app itself? I could not locate it. Also the online updates and repository checks recognizes the proxy I set up.
By the way I am using GNOME 3 as my DE. I would also like to share that when I use the network settings > proxy of gnome 3 none of the apps recognize the proxy.

I work behind an ISA proxy. I have to authenticat with domainuser. When defining proxy settings with yast, I cannot put "domainuser" in the URL, so I add it in text mode in /etc/sysconfig/proxy for all protocols. Example: [URL] Then I have to logout/login in order yast to work.
BUT:
- I cannot add communauty repositories.
- zypper fails
In order to make zypper and adding repositories to work, I have to suppress one of the two back-slash like:
[Code]..

I installed openSuse 11.4 (KDE). It was excellent - everything was working great except for Subversion which use to work fine on 11.3 (command line is broken on 11.4, Eclipse/Subclipse works fine on both).
Subversion kept going to the proxy server instead of going directly to our internal Subversion server. I tried (1.) setting the proxy settings in Yast with excluding for our Subversion server, (2.) tried adding the usual settings in ~/.subversion/servers (which worked fine in 11.3). I could not check out on the command line from the local server, I can check out from external servers, eg: Google.
(I installed from the live CD download. I think this is using something some plasma widget thing for the network management.) Why is Subversion not using the usual ~/.subversion/servers file for its settings in 11.4 (KDE)? What is it using and how can I make it not use the proxy server? (Someone else mentioned his Subversion only started working after he used some Chrome plug-in to change the proxy settings but had no idea why?)
