I am running xubuntu 10.04 and I would like to add some space so that some of my icons appear on the right hand side and some on the left. I would also like to center the clock in the middle of the panel. How can I do this?
View 8 RepliesRegarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
When I first decided I wanted to start using Ubuntu, I was using Windows Vista. I created a separate partition by shrinking a portion of my current windows partitions to 60g of free space. I then booting my computer with the Ubuntu live CD and installed it under that 60g of free space. (I dual boot now and have been happy ever since). I guess my question is if I boot back into windows and format the 60g partition, can I shrink more of my windows partition and allocate more of it to the 60g part? I'm only asking this since I would like more space when the newer Ubuntu version comes out. I wasn't sure if by doing this GRUB will get deleted as well and mess up my computer.

Looking for information on how to add an icon to a panel that opens a windows share that I have mounted.
Also when I restart my PC the share seems to drop, is there a way to make them persistent.
so I'm using Xubuntu 10.04.2, and I would like to add the network manager to the GDM Panel.
I know it must be possible somehow, since the Gnome version lacks the battery monitor, and the Xfce version has it present. I'm just not quite sure how to get it done.
I do not have Gnome installed, I have only XFCE, LXDE, and Openbox.
I need a little help regaining some unallocated space on my Hard Drive. I have a 52 Gib unallocated partition and I want to add it to /dev/sda4 which only has 19.73 Gib. (See attachment of my partition table). I ended up with this free space because I deleted a partition that contained another OS I no longer use. I don't know if I can use a move/resize or copy paste. I think the copy paste only copies the stored data not the space. What I want to do is take the unallocated space and add it to the sda4 partition.

The only way I have found to add an application launcher to the panel is to actually launch the app, then right click it's icon on the panel and click "Keep in Launcher". This is great but I've noticed at least one of my applications (Mumble) doesn't give me that option. Is there an alternative method? (see screenshot for example)

I was thinking of resizing the root partition with gparted to take up this space, but it's kind of risky. I was wondering if there is another way to include this partition into my Linux partition without resizing? Like somehow link it in so that / will have more free space?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having an issue adding unallocated space to my root partition. Based on other threads I figured out that the unallocated space needs to be right next to the partition that one wants to extend. In my case, I would like to extend 'ext3' in attached screenshot of gparted. I carved out a 1002MB space and moved this unallocated space right under the ext3 partition (/dev/sda3). How do I add this unallocated space to /dev/sda3 please? When I run 'gparted' on bootup (using linux running on a usb stick), I don't get the option to increase the size of /dev/sda3. Basically the unallocated space is not being 'seen' when I try to resize /dev/sda3.

when i first installed ubuntu i cut up 20 gb from one of my drives and put ubuntu in it, because i still had xp. Now i want to add extra space. can i do that ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx but now getting irritated by a bug or problem (I'm not sure whether it's a bug) in Gnome-panels. The problem is whenever I add a new panel in Gnome Desktop, the new panel doesn't appears on screen and needs to be re-logon to appear. It seems a known issue when I checked for the same at Launchpad, but it existed in betas.
I found this trouble since I have made a clean install of Lucid but thought it'll be fixed in any of the updates, but it didn't solved even after the most recent update I made this morning. I wanted to report this bug but didn't knew how to file bug for gnome-panels as there's no option like 'Report a problem' for gnome panels.
I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.
After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. I recently downloaded/installed Gparted as I want to resize my ubuntu to more HDD space in partition and reduce NTFS partition size. Is there any faster way to do gparted in ubuntu? I remembered in previous versions of ubuntu that gparted had MBR but I can't find info to do this.

I plan to install a server using LVM. I thought a partition schema where /boot would be in an ext4 partition while / /usr /var /home and /opt would be in the LVM. My question is: if I'm putting / into the LVM, is it necessary to divide /usr /var /home and /opt into different logical volumes? If I divide them, would it become harder to maintain when new disk space has to be added to the volume group?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop computer running Linux Mint 9 with the Gnome desktop (not sure what version -- though by default Mint 9 comes with Gnome 2.30). Last night I tried adding a panel to the desktop by right-clicking on the existing bottom panel and selecting "New Panel". Please note that I've already got another panel at the top of the desktop on the left side on autohide and no expand.
When I added another panel, it placed a normal panel on the right side of the screen without any problems. When I right-clicked on the new right-side panel and selected "Properties", I changed the orientation to "top" (where there was already a panel, if you remember). After that moment, it seemed like the entire desktop environment crashed. Everything was completely unresponsive -- the only thing moving on the screen was the mouse. I couldn't do anything with the gui, not even shut the computer down.
Since the gui shutdown wasn't working, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and ran a shutdown command with the option to reboot. The computer shut down fine, and when it woke back up, the same problem was still there: Nothing loaded on the screen except for the background image and the mouse, which was still able to move but nothing else. I have the computer set up to automatically log me in, so I know it's not crashing before the user prefs are being loaded...
After restarting it again and getting the same result, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and tried messing around with stuff to no avail. I did notice, however, that the computer was becoming evermore sluggish, and something printed on the screen stating that a program had been terminated because of "not enough memory". It seemed like some process was consuming WAY too much RAM by itself or a program was accidentally forkbombing the computer. ...All because I added a panel...?
I'm a KDE3 user who just upgraded to 11.3/KDE4 and is still trying to learn the new way of doing things, so please bear with me if I've overlooked something obvious. I've managed to mostly get my desktop the way I want it, except for one problem: I want to add a submenu to the panel, with an appropriate icon.
According to Bug 189583 - Ability to add submenu "like editors" to kicker panel from classic menu this capability was added over a year ago, so I should be able to just right-click on any submenu and the option to add the submenu to the panel or desktop should pop up. Except for me, it doesn't. Right-clicking on a submenu just selects the first item in the submenu instead of bringing up the context menu. I've tried both the classic and kickoff menus, and the same thing happens.
The bug report does mention it is also possible to add a submenu to the panel from Dolphin by going to applications:/ and dragging the folder to the panel. This does add the submenu, but the icon displayed on the panel is the question mark icon, and there seems to be no way to change it. Besides being ugly, I need different icons to tell different submenus apart.
I have install Cent OS 5.5 on VM Ware ESXi 4. I have added new hard disk of 100 GB Disk space to same VM Ware instance.
How do I initialize that volume so I can see it on Linux server and use it.
I have a BIG extended partition. It's at about 750Gb. Aside from that, I have 2 unallocated spaces, one at 240Gb and one at 5Gb. I want to make one of my storage drives bigger, and so that I can take advantage of all the space I have. (Those 250Gb have been unused for ages. I want to use them for my growing libraries.) So I wonder: would it be safe to put these smaller "chunks" into the extended partition, and still have a working systen? I don't want to mess it all up.
Also, can I safely resize a partition, like adding the extra space, without touching the existing data? I'm not exactly sure how the resize/move function in GParted works. Will it wipe and extend or only extend it by adding it? It would be nice to have these questions answered. Also, if it's to any help, this is my partition table as of now:

As for the first entries, they're unallocated. They're the primary drives, but they don't exist. I'm actually considering to move my partitions out of the extended one, because I only have 3 partitions that I use and will ever use. But if the extended partition is not a problem, I will just keep it this way.
I'd imagine that I first extend the extended partition to consume the unallocated space, and then I move it all to the end of the partition, and then resize sda7 to consume it, and get a 750Gb partition. Can this be done without loss of data?
But is it possible to space out the status icons in the Gnome panel? I'm being a bit anal, but they seem so smooshed up.

My "dolphinsu" application is buggy. It won't allow superuser opening of files for editing in superuser kwrite.
But if I make a "link to application" on my desktop with this as the application command:

Then I get a superuser file manager that does allow me to open files for sditing with superuser kwrite.
I'd like to add the link (to "kdesu konqueror /") onto my KDE Panel so I don't have to hunt down the icon on the KDE Desktop to open it.
How do I add a custom link like this into the icons on the KDE panel?
I'm frequently running out of disk space and would like to add a notification as to how much disk space I have to the panel. All I need is basically a little area, stating 1.5GB or 375.5MB on one of the panels.
