Ubuntu :: Add New Keyboard Key Combination For A Function Like Alt + F4?

Mar 18, 2011

I would like do add a new keyboard key combination for a function like Alt + F4.
for example shift + control + s.
Up to now, i was successful with exchanging the function Alt + F4.
But I don't like to exchange, because I need Alt + f4 and shift + control + s for the function close window at the same time.

So how can I add a new keyboard combination without to exchange?

Ubuntu Installation :: UNR 10.4 On New Acer Aspire One 751h (11.6") - Screen Brightness Can't Be Adjusted With The Function Key / Hotkey Combination

Jun 10, 2010

Last weekend I installed Ubuntu 10.4 (Netbook remix) on my new Acer Aspire 751h. The installation seemed to go smoothly, but I've noticed several things that don't work as well as on my old AA 110. I should say that I installed Ubuntu in a dual-boot setup with Windows XP, which the machine already had installed. Firstly, the screen brightness can't be adjusted with the function key/hotkey combination. The sound volume hotkeys work fine, and the brightness hotkeys work with XP, so it's not a hardware issue. The default brightness is pretty dim, so this is an annoying problem. Is there a way to bind the hotkeys to the 'increase/decrease brightness' functions?

Secondly, the vertical scroll bar on the desktop doesn't work, by which I mean if I click above or below the highlighted area no scrolling takes place. However, I can drag the highlighted area up or down and scrolling does take place, and scrolling via the touchpad works. All forms of scrolling work normally within applications. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's only a mild annoyance, though. Thirdly, in the power management preferences application I don't have an 'On Battery Power' tab - just 'On Mains Power' and 'General'. There are some other peculiarities that probably follow on from this. I have a power indicator in the top panel of the desktop, but on bootup it's a 'lightning bolt' icon rather than the battery-shaped icon it should be. If I plug into mains power, it changes to a battery-shaped 'charging' icon until it's fully-charged, when it changes back to the lightning bolt. If I then unplug the mains power, I get a battery-shaped 'discharging' icon, but this doesn't survive a restart. Obviously, a battery level indicator is very useful and I'd like to get it working properly. The help file for power management preferences says something about GConf policy keys that need to be made writable in order to display some sliders and option boxes. I certainly don't have as many sliders and options as shown in the help file. I guess this might be related to the screen brightness problem.

Finally (for now - I haven't explored everything yet) the screen ratio looks wrong. Circular icons appear as ovals. It looks like the software thinks I've got a 4:3 ratio whereas really it's widescreen. I can't see where I can change this. I've looked in 'System.. Preferences. Monitors' but there's nothing I can change there. System testing shows the apparent resolution at 1024x768, whereas the hardware spec is 1366x768. I'm wondering whether to try to fix these things individually or whether a better option might be a reinstall - perhaps without the XP dual boot. What do you think? I'm willing to change settings from the terminal but I'd need to be told exactly where to go and what to do.

Ubuntu :: Assign New Keyboard Shortcut Combination

Jul 10, 2011

I would like to know if it is possible to assign new keyboard shortcut combinations for actions such as:

Action: switch tabs
Actual Shortcut: Control+(Alt)pgUp/pgDown
New Shortcut: Control+Tab (as it is on Windows)
Action: activate combo boxes item lists
Actual Shortcut: Alt+Down or F4
New Shortcut: still don't know yet

I have not found a way of doing this under gnome-keyboard-properties or gconf-editor.

Ubuntu :: Function Keys & Keyboard Shortcuts Stopped Working?

May 17, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. All of a sudden several of my function keys stopped working and several keyboard shortcuts that I had setup involving function keys stopped working as well.

For example, when I go to preferences->keyboard shortcuts and try to set "Toggle fullscreen mode" to Alt+F11, the text "XF86AudioRaiseVolume" appears where it should just say "Alt+F11". Pressing Alt+F11 does nothing.

All of my function keys somehow got mapped to XF86AudioBlahBlah and no longer work. How do I undo this? I recently installed ffmpeg and gtk-recordmydesktop but I don't think I installed anything else.

Fedora Hardware :: Microsoft Keyboard Zoom Function

Jan 17, 2010

I have just replaced my ailing Microsoft Natural Elite keyboard which has surprisingly served me well for about 11 years.. I've replaced it with the (wired) Microsoft Natural 4000 which all is working fine on except for the Zoom slider. It'd be handy to be able to map it somehow and so far no luck. There is also the Microsoft 7000 which is a wireless keyboard which appears to have the same slider key. It just creates repeated events when held up or down, nothing really special.

I've tried xbindkeys per some results on google, but it won't map anything >255. I keep reading about "keytouch" but not quite sure how to use it and seems a bit kludgy, but if that's the best solution I can try it again.

General :: Keyboard Function Button That Corresponds To Wireless Doesn't Work

Aug 28, 2011

I want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu. It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.

I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.

Programming :: Passing Data From Interrupt Handler Function To Tasklet Function?

May 18, 2010

I am doing some Linux kernel programming for my research project. I need to record the timestamp (by using cpuid and rdtsc) when an interrupt handler (top half) is first invoked. Due to the time critical nature of the problem itself, I have to do the timestamping inside the interrupt handler itself (the first operation when the handler is called). However, I understand that tasks that are not so time critical should be deferred to a tasklet function (bottom half) for processing because other interrupts are disabled in a (top-half) interrupt handler. I am currently out of idea on how I can pass the timestamp information that I have obtained in the interrupt handler to the corresponding tasklet function.

Ubuntu :: Switching Between Terminals Without Using Combination Keys?

Apr 14, 2010

This is it. Alt + Ctrl + F key won't work for me! I run kubuntu 9.10 on vmWare and what I want to do is to switch between virtual terminals. I tried Alt + Ctrl + F key combination and it only work once!, Say for example, I'm working in GUI on terminal 7(tty7) and I press Alt + Ctrl + F1 to go to tty1. It takes me to tty1 and I can login, then I come back to GUI using Alt + Ctrl + F7, but after that Alt + Ctrl + F1 doesn't take me back to tty1, no matter how much I try. What I can do is to press Alt + Ctrl + F2 and goto tty2 and without logging in, press Alt + Ctrl + F1 to goto tty1. And again, this won't work for a second time! This keeps happening to all the other terminals. Is there a command to switch between terminals?
