Ubuntu :: Num Lock Is Default Turned Off After Restarting
Dec 4, 2010
I have Xubuntu 10.10 installed on my PC. On language bar in panel I have installed 2 languages - English and Slovak. But always after restart, only default language remains - Slovak. Also Num Lock is default turned off after restarting. Can anybody help me with this?

In my login screen settings, I accidentally swithed from GNOME to the recovery terminal. I can boot to x fine in recovery mode, but I can't change the screen settings from here.
How do I change it back to GNOME?

How come this setting is disabled (2 in about:config rather than 0) under Linux by default? Is there a reason to not turn it on?

This is the difference in the output of a port scan using Zenmap on the same system with UFW turned off and then with it turned on. It is obvious that UFW works.

The wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls

I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

I am having a very annoying problem with my laptop.I am experiencing many freezes. When my laptop freezes, it shows the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking. At first I thought it was a problem with flash (here is original thread: URL... )In the original thread, I thought the freeze's were being caused by the flashplayer, but it apparently isn't the case. The last time I experienced the freeze, I was playing around with the compiz desktop effects.

Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.

On Xubuntu Lucid, How do I kill Xfce's desktop (xfdesktop) without it restarting almost immediately? Right now, when I kill it (using built-in kill; /bin/kill; pkill) it restarts. I don't want that. Xfce seems to no longer have the option to choose if I want a desktop or not.

I am kinda fed up with the a**holes who provide updates, whathaveyou. I just want to have a machine that works. And I am spending more bloody time fixing stupid problems on this system than I ever did in 20 years of using Windows. Yeah, go ahead and say that I flame. I sure as hell do when I'm mad as hell with those that purport to say that Ubuntu is for everyone.
So here is the problem I allowed an auto update to go ahead on my mums's machine (952 files of it, and received this error on reboot: There is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) There was also a fatal error an the mail notification module and also a gnome power management fault (can't remember the exact wording). This caused the system to fail to boot into any operational mode.
I have tried all sorts of things like pressing the SHIFT key to access the menu for previous installs (didn't work either), trying to edit the /temp folder permissions using 1777 chmod (the person failed to say though HOW to do that, as do most posts that also FAIL to tell the exact steps of doing something) which I could not do even when I got to the folder using a 10.04 boot CD as it said 'You do not have permission to change these values'. Really stupid to be locked out of a machine that no one else but my mum and me use at home. (Don't you people get that this is just STUPIDITY or plain old ARROGANCE on the part of the developers/programmers to treat us like dumbasses?). We should have the option to lock ourselves out of our own machines in the setup screen.
Anyway, can anyone see themselves getting past my angry post and actually providing some pointers? And another reason for the anger is that I DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR THIS sort of stuff to be happening all the time. I have just come out of installing Hplip-3.10.5-1 (which was NOT available as a bona fide upgrade so had to get it direct from Debian) to get an HP 3310 printer going which took two days or more. Before that it was trying to get a Canon MP130 to work, and the woes go on. Been thinking of ditching this Ubuntu but have emails etc on it that would take just too much work to get off/backup and start from scratch.

- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (it's discontinued, I know) in an ASUS laptop. I'd had to turn ACPI off, otherwise, it would not start. I could update the BIOS, to correct this problem, but on this laptop that's not doable. Without ACPI, sound is turned off too (which is a pity). If I update to the latest Ubuntu, will this problem persist?

I just finished a fresh install of Lucid netbook remix on my new Sony Vaio netbook. Everything seemed to go fine until a restart was required after installation was complete, when the monitor went black and the netbook just hung. The only way I could restart was to manually power off and on again. The installation seems to have completed fine and everything works after boot up. However, the netbook continues to freeze if I select restart from the power options. I know its not critical, but it is annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?
