Ubuntu :: Access To Booting The System Via CD?

Jan 29, 2010

His laptop was rebooted and when it loads then it stops after the white ubuntu logo (Karmic version) in a black screen with the message in the top left corner:

init crypto disk. He is desperate to get his information out from the "home folder" and there is denied access to this when booting the system via CD. So I was thinking there might be a pass through "safe mode". How do we make a copy of his home folder and access this information from safe mode.(He is pretty f... if he doesnt get this work out fast)

My linux /ubuntu level i on a starter/user level so if you have some great ideas spell them for me. ooh yes I HAVE looked through other treads, but there have not been a geek good enough to solve the "init crypto disk" problem so others with the same problem was able boot normally.

Ubuntu :: Admin Access To System?

Mar 2, 2010

While messing around with file permissions and ownership of /var/www/ i seem to have locked myself out of being able to administer users on my 9.10 system.

when I go to the user administration screen in the icon with the keys is grayed out. with the message "not authorized to make changes". My account seems to have lost admin access. But, I'm the only user on the system.

I presumed I somehow changed my group status from the root group to something else

but, sudo usermod -g root [my name] just returns "no changes made"

All I can do for now is run as the su from the terminal. Is it possible to log into gnome with a root account?

Ubuntu :: Access System From Terminal?

Aug 26, 2010

I have a serious problem! I can not access ubuntu!
I wanted to customize the login window, and went on "System -> Administration -> Login Window" and I click "unlock" and I changed something (I do not remember), then I restarted the computer and all was well, but it appeared a black screen with two lines written, but it is too fast, I can not read what is written, and then pop the login screen, and when I put my login and password and click on enter I released a screen "terminal" at the top right.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Access My File System

Dec 3, 2010

I was running some programs on Thursday and also installing something via the software center when I started getting strange errors. Then I kept getting told that the file system was read only (when I tried to save my work in the applications and while installing software). I clicked the restart button and got a blank popup (no restart or cancel buttons). So I press the power button and it shutsdown but quicker than usual. Power is back up and it goes to busybox.

Ok so I think this is easy to fix, just boot off CD open gparted and perform a check on the filesystem. It happened before and this solved it. But when I opened gparted and tried to check the disk I get:GParted 0.6.2

Ubuntu :: Can't Access System Settings?

I installed 11.04 last week and have been really happy with it. However, yesterday I somehow changed something that removed the "system settings" option from my power-button menu. I cannot access it via the super-button search either... So I can't access compiz, or any other settings now. It was there a couple of days ago... What did I do? How can I get it back?

The drive was originally setup with LVM.

I mainly want to get the contents of my home directory copied to some other drive but can't reach it.

Ubuntu Security :: Allow Sftp Access To System Using Accounts?

Nov 26, 2010

allow sftp access to my Ubuntu system (happens to be desktop as it's also my main system) using accounts that are not able to login normally. (I have already managed to create such accounts.) These accounts need to be chrooted (also already accomplished with the openssh daemon settings.) Where I run into problems is that I want to give them (read only) access to files outside the chroot (on another partition in fact) and the matter if made more difficult because the directories to be shared are on NTFS-3G partitions (as they are a shared linux / windows storage drive). Is this possible and if so, what do I need to do?

Edit - Forgot to include versions
Ubuntu 10.10
openssh 1.5.5p1-4ubuntu4 (the one that comes with 10.10)

Ubuntu :: Can't Access System -> Administration - Always Says My Password Is Wrong

Jan 7, 2011

I did a fresh install on this computer, ubuntu 10.10 server then put desktop on top of it.

I can run sudo -i, enter password, gain root access, but when i click system -> administration and it asks for my password, it always says my password is wrong.

I ran update manager, and my password worked fine there.

When i click system administration and run a task, the password screen looks different

Little more digging shows, it only occures on screens that use the login type of,

Enter the administrative password:

It doesn't even give me options for what user to use. And I am using the account created on install.

Ubuntu :: Access A File System On A Hard Drive From A Live CD?

Feb 7, 2010

What i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10 - Access The System Settings Anymore?

Dec 5, 2010

I was running 10.04 on my Asus EEE PC. Today I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, but with lots of regrets. The complete desktop changed. I don't even know how to access the system settings anymore. I just wanted to start up the Twonky Media server from my personal folder again, which resides in my personal user folder, but I cannot find the folder at all! Shame on the Ubuntu team to throw around the user experience so much. The Ubuntu Linux distribution has gone back to a nerdy level, I hoped it had recovered from that. Make-the-user-feel-at-home! Is that so difficult?

Where is my Favorite group, where is my System group, where is my personal Home user folder? I'm sure I can find them on my own, but it's a shame that my user experience has been taken into a rolercoaster. Why make it so difficult on the user Ubuntu, why?

Ubuntu :: Give Two Client Users Permission To Access Their File System?

May 1, 2011

The desktop computer of my two children has a total of three users:

1) The superuser (me)
2) The user 1001 (my elder son)
3) The user 1002 (my younger son)

Both users 1001 and 1002 can not access their files system, and also they can not save any attachments from incoming mails.

What I tried so far:
I accessed the file manager as superuser, and went: >Root>Home. Here I right-clicked on the folder User 1001, selected properties, selected the tab 'permissions' and allowed this user to read and write into this folder. I also checked the checkbox extend this permission to all subfolders and its contents.

The problem is, when I reboot, everything is 'forgotten' and I am at quadrant zero again.

Eventually I should state that part of the folders are from a backup drive, because the hard disk had to be replaced so, once I re-installed the OS on the new hard drive, I copied the folders from the backup drive into the home folder.

One last question:
Is there a good tutorial about permissions?
