General :: Windows 7 Network : Can't Ping System Box Using Hostname / Fix It?
Sep 17, 2010First off I should say that I am a total Linux and Networking Noob. I have used Windows all my life, but I am now trying to get into linux so I have set up an old PC with Fedora.
Currently I only have the Linux Box and a Windows 7 Box and they are both connected to my broadband router. I have set them up with static IP addresses in the router and they can both ping each other by IP address but not hostname. I would like to be able to use hostnames to access each box (e.g. for SSH access and File Sharing). My question is basically how can I do this, what are the options and which is recommended for a small home network?
So far I have been able to set up the linux box to be able to ping the Windows box by hostname by editing the hosts file. Is this the right thing to do? Should I just do this on the Windows box too?

I want to access a remote computer outside my LAN which is running on Windows.I tried vinagre for the LAN but the result is that the client (running on windows) system goes logged off making the client completely unaware about what is going on with his system.Is there any other way to access any remote Windows system ans still the client able to see and interact while it has been accessed by ubuntu.

C - 100GB - NTFS - Windows 7
D - 300GB - NTFS - (for staffs)
H - 100GB - NTFS - unused
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu on tha last one (H), wishing to keep also the others two partitions. Now I can not access the first two, I don't see them any more. In my Disk Usage appears only the linux partition and one "Unallocated Space" of 400GB
Do you think that i have a chance to recover my data from the two partitions that I can't see them? code...

Apr 13, 2010Right now my setup is as follows: I have an Asus Eeepc 900 running Netbook Remix named eeepc, and a media centre running 64-bit Ubuntu named media.When I try to ping or ssh into one machine from the other, for exampleCode:$ ping mediaI get an "unknown host name" error. However, pinging the device's IP address works. How do I get the computers to recognize each other's host names? Did I miss something in the setup?

Sep 17, 2010I've completed the installation of a CentOS server.Running the setup utility as root, ive set up a static IP and installed apache. Now this works ok. I can type in the servers IP address from my browser/putty/winSCP and access the server within the intranet. The problem is that i would also like to access the server using its hostname, e.g. http://centos or whatever Currently i cannot do it. I've searched the forums, edited the /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/hosts to no avail no matter what i do i cannot access it. i've disabled some services so im not sure if this is the fault.

Apr 30, 2010I got my server set up with 10.04, and with everything installed: DHCP, SSH, Samba, VBox, etc.
DHCP, SSH work fine, but I am having problems where I cannot ping the hostname of the machine.
It worked for a few minutes after I got everything installed and now it's not letting me connect via hostname. I can connect fine if I use the IP address. I cannot ping the machine by hostname unless I add it's IP address to the hosts file.

Sep 20, 2010I just built an AMD Phenom II Six Core with 4 Gigs Ram a 160Gib / and swap, and (2) Two Tb mirror for Raid (data storage) I had been using DMRAID in the deprecated box but this box has MDADM v3.1.4 - 31st August 2010 from source (on MDADM wikipedia).
I have no permission problems with using the raid and dmraid is un-installed. The raid is working perfectly and is mounted in my fstab with ext4 defaults 0 2 as my options.
I have two exports
/media/raid/Test
/test
Both show IP and subnet on the showmount -e for the server. I can mount the test just fine on the server. I cannot, however, mount the /media/raid/Test error: mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting hostname:/media/raid/Test Using dmraid I am able to have the deprecated box export and mount nfs shares from the raid but using MDADM on the new computer, I cannot. I get similar results with pointing MYSQL's data folder to a location on the "/media/raid/Database" (even with apparmor entries).

Apr 13, 2011I have installed Ubuntu on four machines at work and have been blown away. On my machine I have Apache setup for web development and other machines can "see" it using my IP address. I would like to have it so they can access by the name of my computer though. I have no local DNS server so I guess I need to hard code the relationship in each machine? Ideally I'd actually like to be able to use subdomains (which I use locally to avoid annoying .htaccess path problems). i.e. from another machine on the network to go to [URL].
