Ubuntu :: Keyboard Keep Reverting Back To US Layout

Apr 2, 2010

I've got an UK keyboard, and every time I boot up, Ubuntu keep reverting back to the US keyboard layout which is annoying me. I open up keyboard preferences, the UK layout is already selected. So I delete the US layout, click on "Apply System-wide" and it works. Until I reboot and the US layout is back in there! I suspect it's something to do with not having admin privileges to permanently save the changes - if this is the case, why it doesn't ask me for my password, or give me a chance to escalate my privileges or something?

Fedora :: Keyboard Layout Back To USA After Login

Dec 12, 2009

This problem has been discussed a couple of times here and there and there are numerous solutions as well as unsolved stories. The topic says it all I think. I use ca(fr) layout, and in the gnome keyboard configuration (system, preferences, keyboard) I only leave Canada. When I log out and go back in, the layout changes to USA and in the configuration tool, theres canada AND usa. I have to delete USA every time. The file /etc/sysconfig/keyboard is already set to ca(fr) and doesn't change

I tried to delete:
rm -f /var/cache/gdm/your-username/.dmrc
rm -f ~/.dmrc

but I either did miss something or it didn't work. The only thing I observed is that if I set the keyboard layout to Ca(fr) at the login screen (which is always set back to USA), the layout stays to ca(fr) in my session. This problem did not occur on Fedora 11 and it began on 12 on my laptop as well as on my girlfriend's.

I've read somewhere and I forgot where, that it is a known bug in Gnome and that it is fixed in a later version. I applied all available updates and system/about this computer says I have Gnome 2.28.0 and if I recall, this bug is supposedly fixed in 2.28.4 but I may be wrong on the version number. This is very annoying as we try to turn our computers off when we don't use them but this reset every login kind of forces us to our previous bad habits.

General :: Get Back The Control Of The Screen/keyboard On System?

Aug 24, 2011

I have a Linux system running (Debian). It is working perfectly from a remote point of view. I can ssh in it, it has the imap running correctly, and a couple of kvm systems running (I can also ssh to them). Well, it works!

But when I go in front of the keyboard/mouse/screen there's nothing. No way to switch between the consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F# (X is not running on this system). The screen is desperately black. But the screen does not go to sleep mode, it still has its green led on! I guess it means that the graphics card still sends the H and V syncs correctly (VGA connection).

Is there a process that is blocking the display and prevents me from getting the control?

Note: Last time I used the console, it was in console 1. Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Ubuntu Networking :: Turned Off Wireless Using Keyboard Shortcut To Save Battery Life - Now Not Turning Back On

Jan 24, 2011

I have an Asus Eee PC with Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Unity). The other day, I turned off the wireless using the keyboard shortcut to save battery life when I was somewhere without wireless, but now it's not turning back on. I tried restarting, I've done the keyboard shortcut several times, and it still just says "disconnected" for wireless and wired, even though there are several wireless networks around me right now. There aren't any options in Network Connections or Network Tools to turn on the wireless. Is there a way to manually turn it back on?

Search by google did not show any reasonable solution. Maybe some one here knows, how to return this "Keyboard Indicator"?

P.S. I have found Keyboard Indicator Manual from Gnome Library

Ubuntu :: No Keyboard At Grub First Boot - Keyboard After Restart?

Jun 27, 2011

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).

When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.

Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)

I have ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop ASUS F5N. There was a bug in the past versions of ubuntu - ubuntu freezed while it was rebooting and solution is here. However in 10.04 problem still remains, but now there is Grub 2 and mentioned solution does not work. At least I dont know how to apply those instruction for Grub2.

Old instructions:

Quote:

First method

1. at grub boot menu press e

2. go to 2nd line (root=...) and and press "e"

3. at the end of the line add "all_generic_ide" and press "enter"

4. press "b" to boot

Second method Note : You may add the above command "all_generic_ide" to /boot/grub/menu.lst on the end of line root= open console and tape:

1.sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
2.go to the line:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.xx-xx-generic root=UUID=xxxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxx ro quiet splash

and the end of line tape this:

Ubuntu :: Asus Netbook: Which OS To Install?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm completely new to Ubuntu and Linux. Previously, my only experience is that I've successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer that I was giving away to a friend of mine. So now I've got a refurb netbook coming in the mail in a day or two. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which I'm assuming is complete crud.*

So assuming it's a good idea to replace that with Ubuntu, my question is, which one? I see that there is now a pretty prominent download link for something called Ubuntu Netbook. But I also see that there's something called Ubuntu Moblin Remix, and I've seen people on the Web referring to just "Ubuntu Remix."

Which one do I want to install? Are there features in regular Ubuntu that I'll miss because they're not in these alternate netbook versions? Since I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux, I will want to be learning as much as I can. Hopefully using one of these low calorie versions of Ubuntu would not hamper my learning process?

I suppose I should tell you what I'm using the computer for: What I plan to do with my netbook is mainly cruise the Web and watch videos. My desktop computer is an iMac running OS X 10.5.8 (as well as Windows 7 Ultimate on its Boot Camp partition), and I would like to be able to have the netbook and the iMac be able to network with each other so I can copy movie files onto to the netbook's hard drive as easily as possible. Is this a correct assumption? I've seen it implied that Win 7 Starter uses less system resources than the Home or Professional versions and is therefore better for netbooks. Should I maybe consider just keeping Win 7 on there? To me, the most obvious benefit of ditching Windows is that I won't need to have anti-virus software always running in the background and slowing things down.

Ubuntu Networking :: Getting ASUS USB N-13 Up To Speed?
