Ubuntu Installation :: System Half Is In English And Half In Another Language After Upgrading To 10.04

May 27, 2010

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:

1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.

2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.

4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".

5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.

6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.

7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.

Fedora Installation :: Stuck Half Way Through Install / Get Full?

Apr 17, 2010

I bought a new issue of Linux Format magazine and saw it had a bootable disk with Fedora installer/live DVD on it which I was eager to try out "The worlds most advanced Linux distro" I put the DVD in my computer and rebooted it. I selected 'install or upgrade'. It started to load (blasting white text at me). I skipped the media test but then the screen was black and reacted to no mouse moving or keyboard pressing. Not even the OFF button, so I pressed RESET and selected 'install with basic video driver' this time it worked. It didn't fill my whole screen like many 'basic video drivers' but they don't cut off much so I was willing to forgive Fedora using one it was proberly only for the install anyway I could download a new one after. I have a Radeon HD 4200 (extreamly crap) intergrated into the north bridge. I can't afford an expensive graphics card. I build it myself so I can tell you what parts it's got if needed. Anyway I progressed through the setup without problems until I got to the partitionor which defaulted to 'Replace existing Linux system' this would delete Ubuntu an maybe Windows 7. I changed it to custom layout or something like that. It started a partitioner and I remembered I wanted to give ubuntu 30GB more room so I resized it. I created a new 50 GB logical partition and select it as the '/' partition, plenty more space for future Linux distributions. Here's the real problem. Soon after I hit install it said some repositorys require a network connection. It had only one option 'eth0' my motherboard has built in Ethernet but I connect to the net with a wifi card I do not have a cable long enough to reach this computer on the other side of the room. So how was I suppost to continue the setup? I pressed okay hoping it would give up and let me continue the setup but it didn't it said they was an error connecting to the Internet therefore setup could not continue. With only one option: 'Exit Installer'. GRRRR. Interestingly enough after I clicked it the disk drive's light kept flashing but the screen went black forcing me to reboot. Can anyone help me so I can install "The worlds most advanced Linux distribution"*

OpenSUSE Install :: After New Installation, Loads Only Half At Splash?

Dec 8, 2009

this is the 3rd time in 2 days I have installed this OS and its starting to annoy me. I have a Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz with i845 graphic chipset. I have installed 11.2RC2 and after the installation finishes and I reboot, it automatically asks which resolution I want (VESA/VGA). I have to select VESA since the VGA resolutions are HORRIBLY HUGE. When the boot screen comes, it loads halfway and then comes to a crashing halt. I let it load for 2 hours yesterday and it did NOTHING. After turning the computer off and back on, it comes to a screen to load normally or into failsafe. If I choose normal mode it does the same, if I choose failsafe, it does the same. So basically I have an OS I can't reach. If I could, I would give an xorg.conf on here, but I can't even get anywhere to produce one! When I put the live CD in, it boots perfectly, but I have to install again, only to get a OS that wont boot yet AGAIN.

OpenSUSE Install :: First Install Of OpenSUSE11.3 On External Hardrive Using USB Drive

Oct 19, 2010

I've pretty much installed Ubuntu Linux9.10, 10.04 and Debian 5 on external hard drives before, however, I just want to avoid certain pitfalls that may occur with openSUSE11.3. Has anyone successfully done this before? And, is it similar like Debian and Ubuntu installs in that you have to install the OS using an advanced option and specifying /dev/sdb, etc? Right now, I have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive along with Debian as well and wanted to do the same for openSUSE11.3 and was wondering if all Unix derivatives share similar installation processes. I would just like to keep things as I have it currently where the system does not boot with Grub, and instead I have to go to the bios and specify which physical drive to boot from in order to change the boot order.

Ubuntu Installation :: Virtualization And Dual Booting - On The Same Hardrive

Oct 18, 2010

i installed ubuntu using wubi and so far i have been impressed. I quickly filled up the small size i allocated for the ubuntu installation in wubi and now find myself in quite a predicament. I was thinking of performing a clean install of ubuntu and removing the existing windows installation. Rather than dual booting, i was using virtual box to run a windows xp machine so that i could use common windows applications. However, i was having some problems running some applications in the virtual box.

it was possible to install ubuntu and windows on the same hardrive with the ability to boot into either/or, but also be able to run the same windows installation inside a virtualization program in ubuntu? The majority of the windows programs worked fine in the virtual box, but some of the applications didnt. Is there any software out there that can do this?

Ubuntu Installation :: On Windows 30GB Hardrive Limit?

Is it possible to increase the size of the Hard drive to 200GB when installing Ubuntu on top of Windows. The Reason I ask it that I have a Laptop with a 500GB Hard drive, which has windows installed on it Obviously I cannot create a new Partition on this drive to do a separate install. 30GB is just to small for what I want to do on Ubuntu, I know I can access the hard drive using /host/* but that is hassle that I do not want.

OpenSUSE Install :: Formate External Hardrive To Ext3?

Dec 15, 2009

I have a Westel 1 TB external hard drive and when attempting to partition it, the partitioner never finishes refreshing the device. I've tried gparted live, opensuse, & ubuntu; and none of them finish refreshing the device.

Another issue is, I have 200 gig of music & movies that can't be wiped out because I got no room elsewhere to move them to. I would like to set a partition of 750 gig for the ext 3 and leave the rest for ntfs.

Ubuntu Networking :: D-Link N150 Dwa525 Only Half Working On 10.10

Oct 21, 2010

I've upgraded to Maverick but now I cannot get my wireless card working. In Lucid it didn't work out of the box, but worked perfectly by wrapping the Windows driver with ndiswrapper.

I noticed when I installed Maverick that wireless is enabled in Network-Manager and it gives me the option to create a wireless network or connect to a hidden network but it's not discovering/showing any of the wireless networks in range! So it seems as though the card is being recognized but the driver isn't working fully...? I tried wrapping the windows drivers, but that didn't change the situation at all.

Code:
df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

none 723M 0 723M 0% /lib/init/rw
none 71G 2.8G 64G 5% /var/lib/ureadahead/debugfs
/dev/sdb1 7.1G 5.8G 964M 86% /media/disk

Code:
sudo fdisk -l | grep Disk
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000ed7ef
Disk /dev/sdb: 8004 MB, 8004132864 bytes

Also, at Grub there are several old Ubuntu selections from a previous install I did a long time ago; not the next oldest 1 or 2 Kubuntu versions, older Ubuntu versions.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded To 11.3, System Hangs Every 10 Seconds For Half A Second?

Jul 20, 2010

I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds

# apt-get install 0.9.47~winehq0~debian~4.0-1

E: The package wine needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

Ubuntu :: Mount USB Hardrive From The Terminal?

Apr 4, 2011

I'm trying to mount a USB hardrive from the terminal.

Using the following I can mount the hdd:

Code:
sudo mount -o rw,users /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbhd However if I try and change to /mnt/usbhd :

Code:
-bash: cd: /mnt/usbhd: Permission denied

(if I change to root I can view the contents)

If I add umask=000 I can view the contents, but I can't do anything to them:

Code:
sudo mount -o rw,users,umask=000 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbhd

Code:
mkdir: cannot create directory `misc': Read-only file system

I have tried changed the privileges of /mnt/usbhd, and I have tried adding an entry into /etc/fstab (and restarted), and I have tried using "user" rather than "users" but I get exactly the same results.

I don't have autofs or usbmount installed, which I read somewhere causes issues.

Code:
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/usbhd type ntfs (rw,nosuid,nodev)

I've run these commands on another machine and it works perfectly, so it isn't the drive...?!
