Just beating my head against a wall lately trying to enable 5.1 surround through the digital out (spdif) of my Audigy SE card. It outputs fine to stereo right now, but watching a DVD with 5.1 selected in any media player (VLC, Totem, Mplayer etc.) still yields stereo output.

I was running kubuntu 7.10 from 2007 till two days back. Thought it quite old, so wanted to upgrade from 7.10 to 9.10, and if I like the latest kde 4 (since I've not used it yet), the plan was to use the lucid lynx. The two phase upgrade from 7.10 -> 8.04 -> 9.10 went seamlessly without any hitch. But now the problem started to occur, and I will point them one by one:
1. While booting, the startup splash screen falls into a console which read "checking battery state DONE" and it stays there forever. So, I opened another terminal by ctrl-alt-F1, gave my login id, password, type startx to go into the graphical mode.
Everything looks fine, though I find the new KDE way of changing the keyboard shortcuts ( like ctrl-alt-D to minimize to desktop) or difficulty of assigning keyboard shortcuts to applications, or the maneuvering of the panel, no quick launch space, etc.. a, well, bit difficult. But that another issue. Now I wanted to shutdown, there is one button say leave and if I click there it shows, "Sleep", "Hibernate", "Switch user", "Logout" etc. I didn't understand whether Logout will actually shut the system down. Now, while shutting down, as expected, it falls to the opened tty1, and from there I had to do a shutdown -h now to actually shut the system down.
2. Now, Iwanted to add some application to the quick launch section (just right to the K- button). After adding them, I messed the panel, I can't see which application I am opening, the minimized state is not showing and the total panel length is reduced. So I searched some ubuntu forums, and removed the .kde folder and restarted the system. The biggest problem started from there, whatever application I open, there is no title bar (the top bar where minimize, maximize, close button is available). And the system hangs completely. I tried the do

3. Also, I noticed the konqueror is crashing while trying the open that.
I have an internal intel graphics card. Now, please advise what I should do, should I go back to 7.10 again, is there any I can fix the desktop graphics. I have no problem in doing anything in command line to fix the issues.
After a Kubuntu upgrade from Karmic to Lucid on a 32 bit i686 my samba script in /etc/init.d/ was gone. Is that simply a bug or something going wrong during the upgrade, in which case I restore the script from backup, or is there a new way to start/stop/restart... samba in Lucid? Samba is working just fine after the upgrade BTW, both for print and file sharing over a mixed network.

A sound card on F14/KDE -driven system has been replaced with SB Audigy SE (CA0106).
After trying to make the system to recognize the sound card, I have just downloaded, compiled and installed ca0106 driver from the sources at ALSA project site.
Sound card works fine; the microphone catches signal (according to what I hear in earphones when I speak into the microphone), yet no microphone using piece of software (tested on Audacity and Skype) is able to detect and use microphone.
Save that, the sound works fine.
How could I make the microphone work?

i have an Asus P5Q with ALC1200 integrated sound card. I've upgraded today my system from Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 to Ubuntu Lucid 10.04. In Hardy all was working ok, but in Lucid i have no sound, SPDIF (IEC95 seem not working.

Alsamixer shows no capture controls for the device and I get no sound through the browser. I have set the device as default. However, I get sound fine when testing in KDE's System Settings (Phonon). Sound works just fine through Amarok and Dragon Player.
How do I get Firefox to play sound through this device?
I'm trying to get my Audigy 2 Value to output digital but when I try to use the iec958 interface it outputs to the front speakers analog outputs, ie not the digital io socket.
I can get 5.1 surround by using the plug:surround51 device.
Have gone though other guides trying to fix the problem but no luck. how to get the digital stuff working. I have included some outputs.

I've recently noticed that my IEC958 digital audio output has stopped working. The short version of why I didn't notice this immediately is that I have two simultaneous audio outputs from my system to my speakers and I hadn't realized the IEC958 output wasn't in use.After messing around with a few settings to no avail, I remembered that I'd recently run update manager (this had to be within the last two weeks) and thought this might be the cause.I have just booted to a 10.10 install disc and verified the IEC958 output works fine there.
Unfortunately I'm not sure which of the recent updates could have caused this problem. The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

In between i have upgraded my system. now when i am giving priority to hard disk containing kubuntu, i can login to kubuntu, but cant get in to windows7. i have upgraded grub but not working. when i am giving priority to hard disk containig windows7 it enters and work properly. but not working in the previous.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?
What's the right direction or give me step by step on how to do this?

I would assume I have to do something with the channel map, but I don't know where to begin. I can say it is not a hardware issue as it works fine in windows 7 where my mic in is my sub-woofer/center out and my line in is my line in is my rear speaker out. I tried going into sound preferences to see if I could get it to use line in and mic in as sub-woof out and rear out , but there was no such option. All I was allowed was analog duplex 1 output / 1 input.

I'm having trouble after installing Lubuntu-desktop on top of a Ubuntu Server (64 bit). about the reason for this abomination of distributions is to achieve 64 bit Lubuntu. I used to run Ubuntu 64 straight, but didn't like Unity at all; Arch Linux was great up until now, but I'd like to settle down and focus more on productivity.
The situation is thus: I cannot manage to make my X-Fi USB sound card work without hacks, and at best it only works in some applications. I *think* it may be a bug in ALSA, but I had no problem in the latest versions of Ubuntu (11.04 as of this) and Xubuntu even (11.04?).
I can currently only play media in VLC media player using the following hack in my ~./asoundrc

I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?
I'm having a frustrating problem with a .sh script. It's a fairly simple script to get a volume readout in Conky. I refer to the .sh file in my Conky file as such;

When I decode an audio clip which contain 5.1 streams (the encoding doesn't matter - or does it?) I cannot find an option which allows redirection of the lower frequencies (from front, back and center channels) to the sub woofer (LFE channel). I understand that this perfectly normal and this is how 5.1 supposed to work. My problem is that my speakers are not full range, so they cannot reproduce the bass in the streams. I use ubuntu 9.10 and my pulseaudio version is 0.9.19. The player I use most is SMPlayer (version 0.6.8 (SVN r3213)) and AC3-liba52 for AC3 decoding. My system is up to date.
Currently using an Asrock ION 330 with an SPDIF output and running 10.04It works as stereo but can't get the system to run as surround sound and everything shows as 2 channels only.The hardware itself supports it fine as it works under windows 7 without issues so it has to be a config issue somewhere.I have tried everything I can find via google including upgrading the alsa drivers but so far there has been no change.

Sound Preferences have only stereo options, how can I get surround 5.1? If it helps, I have Realtek for sound.
I own an external usb soundcard: Creative Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1. After some tweaking around Multimedia Settings, (K)Ubuntu 9.10 successfully detected the card. I can now use it.
However, setting the sound level in KMixer does not work at all - KMixer now only contains a Microphone channel. Using hotkeys, I can still turn volume from 0 to 100%, but that has no effect on the volume produced by the soundcard. The sound card comes with a sound joggle, but turning it left or right has no effect whatsoever on the volume level.
Is there a way to solve either of these issues? p.s. Also, the card came with a Windows app and driver cd.
I've been trying to get my surround sound(5.1) to work for the past couple of of days, followed a number of guides, but nothing seems to get it working at all. I'm connecting the speakers using 3 analogue audio cables, I have tested and they work fine under Windows. When I go into the Sound options in Ubuntu I don't see a 5.1 profile listed under the Hardware tab, only stereo(and that works fine).
The sound controller is a Realtek ALC892 built-in to my mobo(Gigabyte P55A-UD3).
Here is some info I've seen requested in other threads, I'm running 10.10 RC, but I can assure you it doesn't work under earlier versions.

I just got a 5.1 Surround sound system and set it up. I found that it was only working as stereo, though (That is, only the two frontal speakers were producing any sound). I made sure everything was not muted in alsamixer and checked that the hardware was set to 5.1 in the Sound Preferences Hardware tab.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and my sound card is an onboard Intel DG41TY, Realtek ALC888VC codec.
