Ubuntu :: 2.6.31-20 Kernel Freezes - How To Fix It

Apr 14, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 with the 2.6.31-20-generic kernel was my default for a long time. Since I reinstalled GRUB2 after a brief time using legacy GRUB, however, 2.6.31-20 just locks up the machine. If I choose the 2.6.31-19 kernel from the GRUB2 menu, things work as expected. If I choose the 2.6.31-20 kernel, I see the Ubuntu splash logo, then the login screen only briefly - then the screen goes blank. After that, nothing happens. I've let the system sit for hours, but it doesn't do anything further. I have already run update-grub, so GRUB2 definitely has the most current info on my Ubuntu install.

Ubuntu :: Latest Kernel Freezes System Up / What To Do?

Oct 18, 2009

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 side-by-side with Windows XP.

Today, all of a sudden my system kept freezing up, forcing me to manually power-down my computer. Well, I tried picking an earlier kernel to boot from and, sure enough, there was no longer a problem.

Ubuntu :: Boot Freezes After Update To New Kernel / Resolve This?

Jul 1, 2010

I've just updated (through Update Manager) to the latest Linux kernel, (2.6.32-23, I believe) and now Ubuntu will not boot to the desktop.

It gets as far as finishing fsck on all of the drives, and successfully completes checks if necessary, but after that it just comes to a halt and won't proceed any further.

The last messages on screen when it freezes are (ignoring the fsck success reports):

init: ureadahead-other main process (954) terminated with status 4
init: ureadahead-other main process (959) terminated with status 4
init: ureadahead-other main process (970) terminated with status 4

These messages were appearing before, though.

The only way I seem to be able to boot now is by selecting the previous kernel (2.6.32-22) in GRUB.

Is anyone else seeing this, and does anyone know how to fix this Ubuntu update problem?

General :: Ubuntu Install Freezes / Kernel Panic

Jul 24, 2011

Yesterday I decided to dual-boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I successively instaled Ubuntu the first time using a flash drive. However, I found that I had made the partition for Ubuntu way to large. Having no idea what to do, I messed around with the partition sizes. Through a series of... mistakes, I deleted the two (the main space and swap space) linux partitions. When I restarted my computer I got the "partition not found" error. So from there, I burnt another ubuntu disk, (the flash drive I used had been reformatted for use on an Xbox) I am able to boot a live version of ubuntu on my computer. However, when I go to install Ubuntu, something goes wrong. After copying all the files, it goes into kernel panic about not syncing, and freezes.

I had looked up some advice on the web, and they said that it might be a memory error. However, Ubuntu 11.04 does not have the memtest86 or whatever, (at least that I could find) So I took out the smallest RAM stick (1 gig, leaving the laptop with 2 gigs of RAM) and it still freezes.

I included the story to see if I did something wrong with any of my steps that may have permanently done something bad to it.I know it does not sound like it, but yes, I only installed Linux yesterday, therefore, still a newb.

Ubuntu :: Freezes On Logon Screen After A Shutdown During Kernel Update?

Sep 2, 2010

A while ago, I was applying the new kernel updates (I guess 2.6.32-24, or the one after it.. well, the latest generic update) and accidentally powered off my laptop. And now it wont come up. It comes to the logon page, and neither the keyboard, nor the mouse work. Cant even switch to the TTYs. When I boot with the recovery mode, I just see a black screen (probably the TTYs dont work) but after "processing" some time, nothing happens. Not sure if the keyboard works, as I cannot turn on/off the capslock switch, but ctrl+alt+del works

Ubuntu :: Desktop Environment Freezes During Load After Kernel Update?

Jan 27, 2011

This morning I noticed that there was an update to the kernel ready in the Update Manager, to version 2.6.35-25. I let Update Manager do its thing and I restarted my computer when it prompted me to.If I select 2.6.35-25-generic in Grub, Ubuntu boots just fine, all the way to the login screen. However, after entering my password, it looks like Gnome is going to load, but it never does. All I see is the default wallpaper and nothing else; the system locks up and does not respond to any input; and the fans start spinning at full-speed. My only option at this point is to do a hard shutdown. I have no problems if I select the kernel I was using previously: 2.6.35-24-generic

Slackware :: X Freezes (xfce) Instantly After Kernel Rebuild?

Dec 16, 2010

New build of Slackware 13.1 x86_64 in Dell E4310 laptop. The stock install works fine barring a few bits of hardware but after recompiling the kernel X loads and immediately freezes, whence I need to soft power down (I cannot switch back to a console). On capturing stderr from the command line, when executing startx I get various warnings including:(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:2368): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failedCan't really tell if the above is relevant... Sorry I can't dump the lot because the machine isn't on the net yet.

There is nothing errorwise in the Xorg log after a reboot. The very last line relates to a video mode with modeline info etc. I have compiled either into the kernel, or as modules everything I think I need though unfortunately I seem to have to load them all manually, so I hav no idea of I've missed something important. This includes all the Intel drivers i915, drm, intel_agp etc.Googling suggests bugs with polkit and I don't know why gnome has anything to do with my system in any case.Other thing that I find annoying is that xorg.conf no longer exists and I am relying on the HAL daemon, about which I know nothing. It took me ages to find how to change the X keyboard map - very frustrating. How do I confirm which video driver etc.?

Debian Configuration :: Kernel 2.6.32 And Xserver Freezes - Crash Fubar?

Sep 28, 2010

I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.

I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).

Here comes the gory details:

>>> The graphic card:
lspci | grep gra
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
>>> When it works with .30 kernel:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
code....

Noting that there are no more Modlines in the new Xorg.0.log

Besides, X is disabling the mouse and keyboard in the configuration.

Hardware :: Intellistripe 65 Driver Kernel Panic - System Freezes

Sep 23, 2010

Previously we ran a 2.6.23 Linux kernel on our systems. We have now upgraded to a 2.6.32 kernel and are in the process of testing to make sure everything works. We have a driver for a Magtek Intellistripe 65 that was previously working in the 2.6.23 kernel. Originally it didn't want to be loaded into the 2.6.32 kernel at all. I had to make some changes to the code (ie replace kill_proc and other functions that have since been removed/replaced) and now when the card is removed the system freezes. I have a feeling that it could be to do with changes to usb-core, but i'm not sure.

I looked through and diffed the kernel for changes to usb-core, but i cant see any earth shattering changes to it, so i believe it still should be working fine. I've tried my modified version on the 2.6.23 kernel, and its all working fine, so it wasn't my changes that broke it.

Networking :: Vpnc Freezes Computer With Kernel 2.6.33-gentoo-r2, X86_64

Jul 18, 2010

I am trouble trying to get vpnc to work on my laptop.

Using the same computer via Ubuntu, it works fine.

I used to use an older kernel with the cisco vpn client, but had to go through the motions of turning off cpus in order for it to work. I gave that trick a try and it does not work.

I pretty much followed the instructions from: Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Gentoo vpnc HOWTO

The machine completely locks up right after I enter my password...

I don't see anything relevant in the /var/log/messages file.

Is there another log file to look into specific to the vpnc?

The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Driver And New Kernel 2.6.35 Kernel - No Longer Work

Nov 24, 2010

With the recent upgrade kernel, my ATI driver can no longer work. After upgrading to the new kernel, upon reboot I would get stuck at the "checking battery status" and can't boot into kubuntu.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 64 on intel i5 with radeon hd 4870.

So I thought I messed something up since I was fooling around with conky script the day before. I did a clean install of kubuntu 10.10 64 and reset all my settings and my files. At this point, everything works smoothly and I can reboot multiple times without a problem.

I proceeded to install the Radeon catalyst driver following the documentation, which worked perfectly for me on the previous kernel. After rebooting, I can no longer get pass the "checking battery state" black screen. I had to boot into safe book, uninstall all fglrx and also delete xorg.conf to be able to boot back in normally.

I have read this document in regards to the kernel but I am concerned about my /etc/fstab,/etc/rc.local and /etc/grub.d/40_Linux files being overwritten from updates.

I am concerned about when one of my users decides he wants to run his updates via apt-get or package managers that all of the configs that I have done will be wiped away.
