Ubuntu :: 11.04 Global Menu In "Classic" Mode
May 1, 2011
In the betas of Natty, all the way up to the final release almost, there was a global menu in "classic" mode. This is now gone in the final release and the old school layout is back. How can I get the global menu back in classic mode? I really liked it and would like to turn it back on.

I had to finally give up Unity because my little netbook was running so slow. However, I loved the global menu because it freed some valuable screen space. In classic, I can't figure out how to get the close/max/min/title into the panel/global menu like it is default in Unity. Is there a way?

I installed the Global Menu Bar applet for my top panel, thus removing the menu bar from most, if not, all of my apps on Ubuntu. I removed the applet, mainly because of how God-Awful and inconvenient it was. Now, I don't have any menu bars on my apps!

Netbeans menu doesn't go on global menu. It stays in application. Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04, to find that I don't like Unity. I want to get back to normal Gnome, but on the login screen, when I select "Classic mode", it gets into Unity anyway.
I also tried to un-check Unity Plugin in Compiz Settings, without success. "Classic mode (no effects)" works great, but like it says, there is no effects at all...

I spent a good amount of time setting up 11.04 the way i like it to run in classic mode with my firewire soundcard acting right and the apps i like. I added some new repositories yesterday and did an update and after that i restarted and all of the sudden ubuntu classic mode isn't even a choice any longer and unity is acting really strange and doesn't look right.

I decided to put a copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick. Downloaded the image file and USB installer and built the stick with no problems. I REALLY don't like the new interface, so I went to the login screen tool and changed the login to come up in Classic mode. Trouble is, now when I try to bring the system up I'm presented with a log-in screen that asks for a user name and password. Since I'm using a live image (akin to a live CD) I don't have any user name or password established. Are there defaults that will allow me to log in? Or do I have to recreate the installation and create a user account that will let me log in?

Is there any way when booting the LiveCD of Ubuntu 11.04 to force the use of classic mode, even if the computer meets the requirements to use Unity and would otherwise start Unity? Is there a kernel parameter that would do this? In searching, all I can find is the selection during login, but this seems to only show up after a full installation, I want to do this in the Live CD environment.

Does anyone else have the problem with Natty 64 bit, where when apps are opened up in full screen its not filling the screen properly, until the app in minimized & maximized again? Unity works fine, this is only an issue in classic mode.

Been looking online and have only been able to find PPA lines. I tried adding them to software sources with no joy. I keep getting an error message. Are there any .deb packages for global menu? If not can anyone give me straight forward steps on how to install it? I am running Jaunty.

I actually like some aspects of the global menu, but the reality is that a better solution for non-maximized windows is to just have the menu in the titlebar, and have title hide when you hover over it to reveal the menu, just like it does for maximized windows. You aren't losing any screen space with this solution.Having to click on a window, then go all the way back to the top left of the screen is hardly a convenience, especially when using a touchpad.

As Unity have too much serious regressions to be usable desktop (I'll list some so maybe somebody could get an idea what to change for Ocelot 1110 edition):desktop switcher is obnoxious for somebody who is used to having 8-12 virtual desktops and to see in system tray what desktop is taken and what desktop is free. I do not see Pidgin icon in system tray anymore. And I hate (not dislike, but hate) Empathy, so I do not want to hear "Install Empathy". Have empathy for users who just want their apps in system tray! Launcher is bugged. I added Synaptic to it, place in launcher was taken, but there was no icon until restart. I added dconf-editor, there was no icon for it also after restart. weather applet is no more part of date/time tray indicator, but you can install it separately. Yes, you can install it separately, but you can not add your location, and that applet is not smart enough to read your old settings of weather and 1-5 locations for time zones should I go further? In short, 1104 is stable but default login (Unity) is not functional. It is better than M$ Vista which was not stable, but I expected that Ubuntu would adhere to higher standards than one shitty commercial company which wants only money of users and therefore rushed non-functional software to market.
My question (finally): In Ubuntu classic items I added to right click menu using nautilus-actions are not there anymore. They are still present in Nautilus, but not in desktop right-click menu. I googled a bit and found zilch, so I ask here. Please share how to do it (scripts folder is still there, but that would be regression to be unable to edit right click menu, FFS Ubuntu is not proprietary software so we would be helpless and could not tweak our favorite OS how we like it).

I'm really liking the global-menu bar that I recently installed, except for one thing:
The application name on lots of programs shows up non capitalized or in the picture above the name of Google Chrome shows up as 'google-chrome'. Being the extremely organized person I am (verging on OCD), this bugs me. A lot. Is there any way to change it?

I'm using gnome shell 3.4.2.1 from the stable debian repository. 2 problems with the gnome-tweak-tool:
1) The extensions list is empty, even when the gnome-shell-extensions package is installed
2) in the non-classic mode only, setting made in the tool have no effect: e.g. Shell->Show date in clock does not toggle the date in the clock.

I've switched my non-maximized window button locations back over to the right with gconf-editor but i'd like to change the global menu buttons over to the right as well.I've had 20 odd years working that way. I can't seem to find an option in gconf-editor and if google has the answer I'm not using the correct search terms.
