I spent a good amount of time setting up 11.04 the way i like it to run in classic mode with my firewire soundcard acting right and the apps i like. I added some new repositories yesterday and did an update and after that i restarted and all of the sudden ubuntu classic mode isn't even a choice any longer and unity is acting really strange and doesn't look right.
View 1 RepliesI decided to put a copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick. Downloaded the image file and USB installer and built the stick with no problems. I REALLY don't like the new interface, so I went to the login screen tool and changed the login to come up in Classic mode. Trouble is, now when I try to bring the system up I'm presented with a log-in screen that asks for a user name and password. Since I'm using a live image (akin to a live CD) I don't have any user name or password established. Are there defaults that will allow me to log in? Or do I have to recreate the installation and create a user account that will let me log in?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 11.04, to find that I don't like Unity. I want to get back to normal Gnome, but on the login screen, when I select "Classic mode", it gets into Unity anyway.
I also tried to un-check Unity Plugin in Compiz Settings, without success. "Classic mode (no effects)" works great, but like it says, there is no effects at all...
Ok not sure what is up or how to get it back, the desktop is stuck in classic mode. I want to continue testing with Unity, i think the classic mode is like gnome.i was/am considering switching all my home systems to Ubuntu and want to see if the wife can get accustom to Linux.New user btw, so please bare with me.FYI I think the wife can get used to Unity since it reminds her of an Android
View 6 Replies View Relatedi just installed ubuntu 11.04 (not beta) and switched to classic mode since it is really slow for some reason.i tried to go in update manager to see if it might fix it,but there arent any new updates.i also checked additional drivers which showed up nothing.when i had 10.10 it was quick and responsive,but 11.04 just makes me want to go back to the old version.can this be a video driver problem that its going slow?

Is there a kernel parameter that would do this? In searching, all I can find is the selection during login, but this seems to only show up after a full installation, I want to do this in the Live CD environment.

1) The extensions list is empty, even when the gnome-shell-extensions package is installed
2) in the non-classic mode only, setting made in the tool have no effect: e.g. Shell->Show date in clock does not toggle the date in the clock.

I just moved to this new version of the O.S but have noticed considerable processor use when I open the Ubuntu software centre. When getting apps from here my processor goes bad. Sometimes freezing the whole system. I tried using XFCE 11.04 booting from a usb and get the same experience. How can I make this stop happening and make my system work quicker and smoother.

I upgraded to Natty at the beginning of May and Unity has been working fine until about 4 days ago. Around then, then I cold boot and log in, Ubuntu starts in "Ubuntu Classic" desktop. If I log out then back in, Unity starts as expected.In both cases of my logging in, Ubuntu Classic is not selected - Ubuntu is, which should start the UI under Unity.

I have a Netgear router and the network is WPA-PSK password protected. All other devices can perfectly connect. The netbook can under WinXp and could with Ubuntu 9.1. Now, with the 10.04, it keeps asking for the password but never connects. Obviously I triple checked the password and there's no chance of a mistype error.
i've installed Ubuntu many times before. one thing i can never understand is the root user. i was never ever asked to set the password for the root user during installation. and for some reason, maybe i ****ed up during installation of stuff or whatever, i will no longer be able to login to root. it will say my password is incorrect.WHY CAN'T MY ACCOUNT BE THE HIGHEST ADMIN???very pissed off right now as this is the 2nd time i'm reinstalling my Ubuntu. (first time was because i might have ****ed the uninstallation of MySQL. now it's wrong root password BS)

From some instructions that refer to Ubuntu versions below 9.04, I need to enable the plain theme for the keyboard to display during login, but 10.04 no longer has a login preferences GUI so how do I do this in 10.04?Or, does anyone know of another way to do this? I set the Assistive properties to display the keyboard on login, but nothing is displayed.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with the latest update of lucid ubuntu. I was on 10.04 for the longest time but decided to update while I was out doing errands. When I got back the logon screen was made up of blue and gray windows on a completely black background and the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work!
I found that if I unplugged and then replugged my mouse that I could get it working, but not all the options work properly. When you try to close a menu it just stays up, but it isn't there at the same time. Also, the shutdown/restart options don't work along with the physical power button on my computer, I have to remove the battery and power cord to shut it down.
I am currently dual booting ubuntu and windows 7 on my gateway NV59 laptop.
I'm trying to boot into 10.04, but all I see is the purple background. I never get a login box to load the desktop. I've managed to gain access to the desktop, using the command line from the recovery console, only to see various warnings about gnome applet failures.

I do not have KDE or kdm installed, but rather use xdm. I was having no trouble prior to upgrade and even had an XDMCP session going during the upgrade, but once I logged out I couldn't log back in. I'm not real sure what's going on.

I use OpenSuse 11.3 and I successfully built a samba/openldap server. However the raoming profiles were not working so I removed the roaming profile part of the samba and the openldap using ldap account manager. I also rejoined a couple of the computers back to the domain successfully (it was not an instaneous join, it took a good minute or 2 to join each pc). Now I cannot cannot login to any of these computers with the domain credentials. I can share using the UNC path no problem and this was working find about 1 week ago.

When I start up and the login screen appears it no longer says my username and Other.. under it. It only displays Other.. I have to click that type in my username and then my password. When I log on the Auto Bug Reporting tool pops up and says 3 things crashed

I installed lucid last week, and this morning installed some updates that appeared in update manager and then started having issues with permissions so I rebooted. Now when I try and log in I get the message Authentication Error Normally this wouldn't be a problem I would reboot again hit ESC just before loading Grub appeared and go into recovery mode and change the password for my master user. But I never get the chance to press ESC, and even I hold the key down from the time my BIOS flash screen is up, I never get the GRUB menu.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer get a login prompt when switching to console mode e.g. (CTRL+ALT)-F1. Instead i just get blinking cursor in the top left corner. Key strokes are printed the screen but otherwise nothing happens. I can switch back and forth between X and the console normally.
Where are the consoles configured, and is there a corresponding log somewhere i can check? Has anyone had similars problem?
My system is an old Amilo Pro laptop with a VIA 800 compatible chip-set.
how I might try using Recovery Mode to fix whatever is wrong? When i'm booting, I no longer get the gui login prompt. Instead I get a Terminal-like login prompt. I can login and everything but I'm a noob and don't know what to do. I booted to recovery mode and selected fix broken packages but this didn't fix the problem. is there anything else I can try?
