Networking :: Compiz Doesn't Play Nice With Remote Desktop - Ubuntu 10.04TLS
Jun 17, 2010I want to set my main PC as a remote desktop so I can use it for programming and data storage remotely. I plan to control it with my netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Remix. If I disable compiz I can successfully connect and manipulate my desktop remotely, but I can't do it with compiz enabled on any settings. Is there a way to fix this issue? Would I have the same problem if I installed KDE?

Apr 28, 2011I've just upgraded to 11.04, but Unity is unfortunately not my cup of tea. I use the classic desktop but I cannot find a way to disable a certain graphical desktop effect... I'm thinking of how the current workspace quickly slides into the next when I choose a different workspace.
If my recollection is correct, you could turn effects like that off in 10.10. This makes me dizzy, does any of know how to turn this off?

Feb 6, 2011I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Mar 18, 2010I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

Nov 20, 2010I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

Apr 8, 2011I am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.

The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Dec 14, 2009I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

I think that is the applicable hard ware infoNow for my problem: when I am using Compiz dsktop cube or desktop wall In't set the horizontal size to 4(for a perfect cube like I want) it works with any other value, from 1 to 128 just not 4 has any one else had this issue or know of a fix?

Jan 20, 2010I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.

Apr 29, 2011I was just experimenting with compiz effects on Natty 11.04, and when I clicked desktop cube (which I'm assuming you're not supposed to do, haha), my compiz broke. The pop up windows are way at the top of the screen, almost out of view, and the windows lack the close, minimize, and maximize buttons. I tried reinstalling all the compiz plugins, and when I rebooted I had the same problem! I am using metacity right now, but I would be very sad if i was stuck with it.

May 19, 2011Today, after some testing with compiz in my PC, I ended up uninstalling it again, because the video card didn't have the right specs. So when I rebooted, my desktop started acting weird - the applications' top panels disappeared, they couldn't be moved around, no more usable workspaces, etc ... also the mouse pointer keeps on rotating indefinitely, making my OS practically unusable. So is there any hope I can restore my desktop to its previous state, or do I have to do a full reinstall, which I'd like to avoid if possible ?

Jun 28, 2011I messed up my desktop by playing with settings in compiz while i was in unity desktop. The problem happened when i was checking and unchecking features for the cube function. After messing with those i have no menu and no sidebar cant access anything with keyboard shortcuts cant bring up a terminal. The only thing that exists are a few shortcuts to files on desktop. Running 11.04. BTW classic and all others work fine.

KDE works fine with compiz.

Unity seems to work fine as far as this is concerned, but I hate unity. It isn't even remotely ready to use in my opinion.

Apr 9, 2010I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.2. I can't get rid of the ctrl-alt-d keyboard shortcut in Gnome. I have set it to "disabled" in control center -> keyboard shortcuts, but no luck.
When I run the gnome-keybindings-properties program from the terminal it dumps these two messages onto stderr:

I realize this isn't the most critical problem, but I am experimenting with Guile (scheme as a C extension language) which I am editing in Emacs, and even after reassigning "down-list" I keep hitting C-M-d because it's right by C-M-f which I also use constantly, and this minimizes all my windows! And there is nothing on my desktop, I never use the feature intentionally. Maybe I should get a wallpaper that says "HaHa Dummy!" or something of the sort to at least get a chuckle out of it when it happens.
