This is not exactly an urgent issue, but when I recently checked the amount of file usage on my main drive Ubuntu was claiming that I had used over 128 terabytes of space on a 650 GB drive. I was wondering what could be causing this issue.
View 1 RepliesI am running the newest version of Ubuntu on my laptop. The connection randomly seems to massively slow down. After a speed test is run it registers at .05 download and Ubuntu crashes before it gets to upload. I reboot from the crash and it runs fine for a while, then it suddenly does the same thing. The connection is running fine on my Windows 7 desktop, I don't know what is going on. In transmission the upload speeds are running at ~100kbps though. If I try downloading a mere 400kb .torrent file it stops half way through, usually at 200-300kb done, downloading at 1.2kbps the entire time. This is getting very frustrating and I really don't want to go back to Windows.
View 3 Replies View RelatedToday morning I logged on to one of our servers (through ssh -X) to perform a routine maintenance. When I tried to open a GUI application, it failed to connect to the X server of the workstation. Eventually I ended up issuing the command

and shockingly it showed that / is 100% used. I checked / using

du --max-depth=1 -xh /
to check the sizes of the individual directories, which showed that only about 18% of the / is used and that confused me badly. There was no quick solutions when I googled around; but luckily I found the following link which nicely explained the issue I had:

All I did was found out the services responsible for those unreleased files (using lsof +L1) and restarted them. That is it. Now df reports only 18% of the disk is used and all my X things started working again, thanks to Walker.
note: acct and acct2 are not the actual account names. I spent a long time figuring out this ubuntu problem on my own and decided to share it with the ubuntu users out there. I will give a summary of what had happened and what I had done to resolve it. I did a lot of complicated account password changing as well. I wanted to get rid of the login keyring thing.
I had tried messing around with some of ubuntu's settings when I first installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I changed settings in: System>>Administration>>Users and Groups, and System>>Administration>>Login Screen. I got terrible results, but ended up solving it on my own. The first account I had was named "acct". I had an issue with the keyring always needing to be unlocked, meaning I had to type in a password twice. I did not like this. So I decided, why not delete this "acct" account and make a new one that I can use?
I made a second user account called "acct2". I messed around a lot with the settings, just to see what would happen and what would work. I tried to cut out some of the files that were in the other account, the account "acct", while I was in user account "acct2". I could not because I did not have the rights to do it.
I realized I had to change those files to shared. I logged back into the other account "acct", which was an administrator account. I made them all shared files. Next, I went back into acct2, then cut all the files out of acct that I needed, then I deleted the home folder for acct. This is probably where the problems all started. I always start with the purple screen and have no choice to log into my usable acct2 account and have to wait 7 minutes to get that option to do so. When I rebooted, the screen popped up a couple windows reporting errors to me:

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results.For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Wheezy for two years, and everything was OK, so I decided to upgrade to Jessie. In fact i decided to perform a clean install of jessie, so I formatted the partition where Wheezy was installed, and the /boot partition, and I installed jessie in those partitions.
As I had done with Wheezy, I installed jessie in an encrypted LVM, and the installation was ok (well, almost everything was OK, because grub and plymouth were not working, but I will open another topic about it).
First thing I did after installing Jessie was editting sources.list in order to download a few programs (plymouth, firmware linux non free, libdvdcss2, gufw, menulibre). Moreover, I downloaded a few progrmas from the Debian install DVD (flashplugin, VLC, chromium, clamav). i did not perform a dist upgrade because i was not at home, and where I was I did not have a Wifi connection (so I was using my mobile connecion -USB ethernet with an android phone-. BTW I had just performed a hard reset I had not installed any apps after that, so that mobile phone was "clean").
After that, I created a desktop user account, and I rebooted the laptop . When i rebooted, I started to tweak my user account: I edited dconf, and the gnome shell theme; and I started my mobile connection to download three extensions for gnome shell (window list, simple dock and activities configurator. I had used those extensions with Wheezy, and I had never had any problems). Ten minutes after I started the mentioned mobile connection, I reveived a SMS as I had used over 300 MB. Gnome monitor showed that I have downloaded 300 MB, and the android native data usage app showed the same. I did not download any video or music neither watch any videos on youtube, dailymotion..., I did not visit any suspicious web
I had a look at the apt logs and I din not find anything significant (I was using a no sudo user account, so i was not able to perform a dist.upgrade), I had a look at the download, video, music, picture folders and i din not find anything. I tried to check the iceweasel cache folder, but there were so many subfolders I could not check everything.
Im looking for an app pr line of code that could let me observe a process, save the info in a number of variable and then put the gathered info on a file.
Ive been trying with variations of top but no luck. I am running several CentOS virtual servers, VM is 2gb ram 2 processor.
Maybe a script that works over a specified amount of time while writing lines with the info on a text file so at the end i can have a sort of table with the data.
The thing is Im going to stress test the server and I would like to have the data to make some statistics.

When I try to do it the way explained in the guide, it tells me that I'm using a stable version of Xubuntu, and that only people running dev versions (like 11.10) can report bugs.This seems absurd. The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

I just did a fresh install of 10.10. I was running 10.04 but formatted that partition when installing from a USB key. Pre-install, I ran:

However, lsb_release is reporting 10.04. When I boot the system it doesn't show the typical boot screen but rather "Ubuntu 10.10" and output of what's loading up. On my laptop (upon which 10.10 installed fine), the splash screen shows the dots loading up with the new Ubuntu splash (10.10 style).
I go into Update Manager, and it thinks I need to upgrade to 10.10. Thing is, I'm already on 10.10. My kernel version is 2.6.35.22 and I'm running Gnome 2.32.00 according to the System Monitor. I'm wondering if I'm getting 10.10 updates or 10.04 updates since my system incorrectly thinks I'm on 10.04.
230Gb HD, I recently partitioned a 90Gb slice, and ran 10.10 on it for a while, but due to not using it, I fired up gparted off a live disc last night and got rid of the partition. I got Gparted to make a 5gb swap, and the rest for 10.04, all is fine, rebooted to 10.04, updated grub, it removed the entry for 10.10, but reports that my hd is only 140gb, and sda2 is a 5gb swap. What gives? Where's my disc space?
View 2 Replies View RelatedUBUNTU 10.10.This is almost funny but maybe useful: As I am working around my desktops, at times I was getting a sudden changes where shorter screens of my open programs and workspaces appeared. I pressed Esc and all went fine again.Since this was happening frequently I tried to find out what triggers it.I discovered that when I move my mouse pointer over the right bottom corner on my desktop all workspaces will be shown in reduced size in my desktop. When I moved my mouse in the left bottom corner, all open program in the active workspace where shown reduced in size (even the auxiliary pop up toolbars. Esc works fine to return to normal. When I move my mouse over the top right corner then all open programs in the open workspace will get minimized, Esc will not bring them back, you have to click in the task bar. When I move my mouse over the top left corner, unfortunately nothing happens.

When I do a df -h it tells me there is 97% in use.
Checking the computer harddrive I am using about 52.8 GB (of the 110 GB) 501,579 items, totalling 52.8 GB (some contents unreadable)
The external drive is using roughly 49GB of the 120 GB available.

the system appears to be working fine otherwise. I could set a cron remove but that seems a bit more hacky than telling it to shut up.
I am running Lucid server (for a Moodle install) and have sucessfully mounted a cifs partion that resides on a Win 2008 Server to be used for backup purposes.I fist tried using Webmin to backup files but have subsequently also tried using rsync.Whatever method I try to use to copy files across I am getting an error "No space left on device 28", yet the Windows partition has over 800Gb free. The root partition on my Ubuntu server also has over 25Gb free. I have also checked /tmp and /var/tmp and am unable to find anything that might cause the problem. The Windows share is mounted as follows:

I have a bug in the latest release of Ubuntu wich is stoppping me running update manager, or syn package manager. I cannot run a bug report as it comes back error. Is there a way to run using a command line. My system was fully up to date about a week ago.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to install a small rpm that will give command line access to an integrated array controller on my system so that I can add more local disk. When attempting to apply the package I am receiving an error indicating that there is not enough space available on the filesystem. I have expanded the filesystem several times today in order to try and resolve this issue and also moved ~1.5G of files to another filesystem but I am still receiving the error.

I am trying to set up SARG to provide reporting from a squid proxy server.After installing Squid & SARG, I am a little confused as to how SARG has configured itself to run.Should this conflict? Or at least create a race condition? In any event SARG and sarg-reports looks like they have not been updated in a few years.is there anything better that offers per-user location reporting?

For some reason apache/php are returning nothing but a "500 internal server error" response when there is a problem with my php script. For example, if there is a semicolon or closing brace missing, it should cause the script to die with a hint about which line caused the script to stop working. Instead it displays nothing but a "500 internal server error" message.

When I install some packages Yum seems to behave correctly until the the very end when it gives the error: xxx-package was supposed to be installed but is not! I am lookng for any advice which might solve the issue. Below is an example of the yum output.
