Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes Before Login?

Nov 14, 2010

Today I turned on my netbook as usual, and was greeted by a black screen, no sounds, no colors, just black. Tried rebooting into another kernel and also to recovery mode, to no avail. It's always the same black screen.

It reboots with Alt-sysrq-b, and ctr-alt-del; but that's all it does. Didn't respond to any other command that I tried.

I also went into GRUB menu and erased the 'splash' thing from the text, and also tried going to rescue mode, the first one was exactly the same as before; the latter said that the command didn't exist.

For the record my netbook is an Acer AspireOne 751h, and I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes 10 Seconds After Login In Kde

Jun 27, 2010

I decided to install ubuntu again and downloaded 10.04. I had some issues installing with the desktop version, but everything installed fine with the alternate version. Now if I want to log in (on the KDE login-screen) the KDE-loading-symbols show up just as they are supposed to do, the desktop shows up (I can see "Desktop Folder and uBlog) and suddenly the mouse/system freezes. Neither Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't working nor Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives any response, all I can do is to reset my computer.

When I use Gnome as a desktop enviroment the computer totally freezes at the login-screen, without giving me any chance of logging in. Things I already tried: noapic, nomodeset, noacpi settings when booting, I successfully installed the latest ATI-Driver for my 3870, I disabled compiz. The kdm log says that there's some problem with an i-bus-daemon. Disabling/restarting the daemon has no effect on the behavior of my installation.

Ubuntu :: Freezes Shortly After Login?

Jun 20, 2011

I'm trying to use Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop computer after not having it for a few years (I've actually been waiting for new releases to fix this since it started around 9.04, with no such luck). However, it freezes within minutes after logging in just after a fresh install (triggered by trying to do pretty much anything beyond just moving the mouse, opening menus, etc., although I was able to apt-get install a few packages through terminal with no problems and run update manager) with no explanation. I was able to install Ubuntu through the Alternate installer, however. Normally, I would just search the internet (including this forum) (I've solved several problems that way), but this problem wass too broad for me to find anything useful and specific.

Actions before freezes include browsing the web with Firefox, trying to mount NTFS drives in Computer, and particularly predicatably when opening any non-terminal package manager program. Freezes occur reliably whether in full-featured mode or in Safe Mode.

Initially, I thought the problem was related to my USB Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000, but replacing it with a standard non-USB mouse fixed nothing. The Microsoft Mouse does however freeze up by itself on separate occasions, leaving the system operable with the keyboard (independent of whatever the other problem is).

I'm only able to post this from Windows XP. Text Dumps (links): Hardware Info Summary generated by Speccy dmesg dump after freeze and hard shutdown collected from WinXP) Xorg.0.log after freeze

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Freezes Few Minutes After Login?

Sep 22, 2010

i had previously installed Ubuntu 9.10 (dual booting with Windows XP) whichgave me errors of "Hard Disk Bad Sectors" and then would freeze my PC leaving me with no other option than Re-Booting..[ignoring the error as a BUG) so on advice of other ubuntu users.i tried Ubuntu10.04.

On installing Ubuntu 10.04 it showing the same problem as that before.(freezing few minutes after the login page) and again dual booted with Windows XP.

i don't suspect a hard ware problem because my Windows XP works perfectly fine with the Same hard ware.

PS:its the 8th time i have installed Ubuntu ..so its really frustrating .

Ubuntu :: 10.10, Boot Up Freezes At The Login Screen?

Mar 30, 2011

i start up the computer, it loads, it arrives to a screen that says the laptops name, and a bar at the bottum. I can interact with this bar, it is blank and has a picture of a little man with a circle. Clicking on this does nothing, another says shutdown and reset, again clicking on it does nothing. I think the error occured when the computer got unplugged while updating.now before we get into all this GRUB and fancy stuff. I am completely new to linux. I installed this using a cd made from an iso image downloaded from the site. I did not use a windows loader. I don't even have windows anymore. I have all my personal information and data on here and would like it to be restored.I googled it and it says to go to recovery mode using GRUB, don't know how and don't know what grub is.:confus ed:

Ubuntu :: Unity Desktop Freezes Upon Login

May 6, 2011

So I finally managed to install a copy of Natty on my old laptop, but when I logged in, the desktop was frozen. I could move my mouse, but I couldn't click anything. I didn't know if it had to do with packages not being up to date or something (though I doubt it is) so I ran sudo apt-get update, and then tried to run sudo apt-get upgrade, but I got an error saying "E: Unable to locate package upgrade". Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I found a similar question asked at [URL]... login. However, there was no answer. I thought that maybe an Ubuntu-specific forum would have an answer.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Boots , Login , Then Freezes / Fix It?

I recently learned that you can upgrade your version without downloading and burning a cd. So I upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04 and now can not use my computer. It will boot up display the log in screen and I can log in. But when it loads up as soon as I try and do anything the computer will completely freeze. I am not really sure what is going on. I do have a somewhat older machine but I have above the minimum requirements to run 11.04 so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Also I can easily boot into the 10.04 cd so I would like to know the path to back up all my documents and photos just in case I need to reinstall the older os.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freezes Up 30 Seconds Or So After A Successful Login?

Feb 17, 2010

Problem: Ubuntu freezes up 30 seconds or so after a successful login.

Background:I am running a Compaq Presario SR5030NX. It has had issues for a while with running Ubuntu properly. My computer suffers from this bug. I have managed to get the LiveCD running by adding the following to my boot parameters:

Code:
vga=792 i915.modeset=0
When I was running the LiveCD I found that it would freeze after about 30 seconds. I solved this problem by again changing the boot options. This time I:Press F6
Check noapic, nolapic, and pci=noacpi

I then proceeded to install Ubuntu.

My problem arose when Ubuntu did not modify grub.cfg to match the setting I needed in order to boot. I managed to modify in some of the settings correctly, I believe at least, but not all of them.

In its current state Ubuntu is able to boot, but freezes 30 seconds or so after a successful login. If I do not graphically login, I do still have access to VTY1-6. The machine does not freeze until a successful graphical login has been made.

Below is the relevant section of my grub.cfg:

Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,2)
code....

On another note:
The liveCD I have been running for 6 months is BackTrack 3 Final. Which does not have this issue at all. I would wager a guess that BackTrack 4 does though as it is based off Ubuntu instead of Slax.

I can boot recovery mode and have already removed VirtualBox. Given it was installed with a live netinst CD image (on a USB stick) and I have a history of bad installations with this image, I'll try to install the normal CD image, although this will take some time.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Freezes Constantly - Login Sound Effect Doesn't Play

Jul 2, 2011

I have an Acer Travelmate 630(14.1" model) running Ubuntu 11.04 and I have experienced a frequent amount of freezing. Usually when I log in, the login sound effect doesn't play, the cursor turns into a wheel which changes back to the normal cursor, then changes into the wheel, but frozen. At this point the computer has completely frozen, nothing moving, no input of any kind responisive, and I have to hard reboot. Several times after that the problem goes away and I am able to log in and use it normally. I also experienced freezing when loading up Ubuntu Software Centre and using Firefox.

Sometimes after leaving it for a while, the problem is gone, but after an hour or two completely freezes again. Everything on the machine is stock, apart from upgraded 1GB RAM and 60GB HDD. And I use an external monitor because the internal one has a damaged cable(replacement coming soon). Are there anyways I can track down the problem? I have already uninstalled compiz and am running Ubuntu Classic mode. I am happy to downgrade to 9.04 as that is compatible with my USB WiFi adaptor without doing complex stuff, but would like to solve the problem on 11.04.

Fedora :: Unbootable On A Variable Basis / Freezes At GDM/login Screen?

Dec 9, 2009

I have an odd problem - that I'm having difficulty tracking down the cause!

Since upgrading F12 I have had varying levels of success booting in. Let me explain.

1. Boot
2. Plymouth graphic progresses
3. Freezes at GDM/login screen - Mouse freezes and Keyboard lights flash
4. Hard Reset with pushed in power button
5. Repeat with different kernel - usually the same result (the only exception appears to be 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 kernel - this appears to have a better boot success than the other kernels listed)

In particular the .PAE kernels do not boot AT ALL ( this includes the 6-145 and 6-162 kernels). However the .PAE kernels did work on F11!

ABRT does seem to capture the following kerneloops (url very frequently (yes I do return them to kerneloops)

BUT on reviewing the /var/log/messages file they don't appear to coincide with these boot failures times!

Ubuntu One :: Preferences Freezes - Online Account Login System Forced To Change My Password

May 2, 2010

Yesterday Ubuntu One stopped syncing properly: all files and folders were listed on the web site grayed out and tagged with "uploading", while there was "0 bytes Used". I could still upload files manually to the website fairly quickly, so it probably wasn't purely server overload. Anyway, a number of things happened after that:uninstalled the Ubuntu One client packages and reinstalled them in Account settings on the website, I removed my computer, hoping to make a fresh start the Ubuntu online account login system for some reason forced me to change my password (presumably it wasn't strong enough)

After all that, I can still login to the website (with the new password), but the computer can't login. When I type u1sdtool -s in terminal, the result is

Code:

When I open Ubuntu One Preferences from the Me menu, it completely freezes at the Account tab; I can't click anything or even close it (have to kill it in terminal).

I suppose the login failure has to do with the old password whcih was saved in the keyring. The removed computer from the account probably complicates the issue.

Apr 15, 2010

So my Dell latitude E6400 running fedora 12 (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE) is usually connected to a big screen (1920x1200).

Now each time I boot, X becomes unresponsive shortly before or after login for a couple of minutes, and then goes back to normal. This happens both with and without connection to the big screen.

The error messages associated to this seem to be like this, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is cluttered with them :

Code:

I normally start my computer in the morning, walk off for some tea, and come back when X is functioning, but when I'm in a hurry it's pretty, or very, annoying ... drinking tea / coffee to wait for a computer to start is something people did in the 90s, it shouldn't be default behaviour in 2010 ...

I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.

How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
