Ubuntu :: 10.04 RC Desktop I386 ISO Defaults To Installation?

Apr 26, 2010

I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-rc-desktop-i386.iso file and burned it to a CD - i.e. what I thought would be a standard Ubuntu Live CD experience. Imagine my surprise when:On a black screen, there was a new (small) window on the left and a (small) meaningless stick figure on the right at the bottom of the screen, and after a while I got the error window entitled:

Installation failed
The installer encountered an unrecoverable error.
A desk top session will now be run so that you may
investigate the problem or try installing again.

Since when is installation (with no user interaction) a default when using a (Live)CD ISO image of any Ubuntu RC or otherwise? My only purpose was to boot up into the Live CD environment - but that was not only not presented as an option (normally there is a 30 second countdown) and the usual default is to boot up into the Live CD environment. This was not the case with the RC! Why not?

Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Live-USB Containing Among Others Both Desktop I386 And Desktop AMD64

May 1, 2010

I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).

I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?

I boot my computer, the cd-room boots, i choose language from the list and press install ubuntu, after that i see the ubuntu logo blinking and in few minutes it gets black and shows "Input Not Supported" and its just bumping around the screen! I had a feeling that maybe my monitor (ASUS) does not support ubuntu so i tried with a very old syncmaster monitor, but similar message appeared! What could be the problem?

Even after reverting back to the ambiance theme, or other themes, I've noticed that some elements of the Elegant Gnome theme have remained (e.g. the panel color and icons in Chrome or after right clicking and the system font). Is there a way to restore the Gnome defaults or Ubuntu system defaults so that everything is as it should be?

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Defaults To KDE?

Aug 13, 2011

I installed sqeeze on a netbook. Having no optical drive, I created a usb install disk with unetbootin on a laptop running Squeeze stable and the "Debian 6.0.1a DVD 1" iso. Much to my suprise it installed KDE. I expected, and wanted, Gnome. At the tasksel section I checked off "Graphical Desktop Env", "Laptop", and "Standard Sysytem Utilities". I found a similar post regarding this: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=60040 But in this case the OP installed with a netinstall iso and concluded a faulty mirror was the cause. This doesn't make sense in my case as I was using a DVD image which contains, afaik, Gnome, XFCE, and KDE

There surely must be a way to explicitly choose which desktop env. one wants installed. I realize this can be done by doing a base install and using apt-get; but I'm thinking there must be a simpler way using the installer. I tried the "Expert" install and only saw the generic "Graphical Desktop" option again. I figure I must be missing something somewhere. Also, can I get apt-get to recognize my unetbootin stick as a source to fetch from? I tried apt-cdrom and different entries in sources.list but I can't figure it out. It seems wasteful to me to download hundreds of MBs of packages from a mirror when I have them locally.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04/Nvidia- Continually Defaults Back To Low Graphics Mode

Jul 8, 2010

10.04 and Nvidia video card.

This sequence:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf (not sure what to choose, I just pick an option at random)
sudo ldconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig

and then restart gets everything apparently working correctly, with my desktop spread across two monitors.

However, after two or three computer restarts, it 'forgets' and defaults back to low graphics mode and all the common error messages mentioned in multiple threads here, with my second monitor just duplicating the primary monitor.

Under System-Hardware drivers it says Nvidia_current is activated but not in use, regardless of whether it starts normally or in low graphics mode.

What's up? It's a pain to have to go through that sequence over and over again, and then restart my computer every two or three days, and leaving the computer on 24/7 isn't an option. power saving and all that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Defaults And Start-up Apps On Maverick Netbook Upgrade?

Oct 11, 2010

I've upgraded my netbook from Lucid to Maverick, and have a couple of questions:

1. My start-up apps don't appear to be running. In particular Tilda and Gnome-Do don't start up - and removal of the "Alt+F2" shortcut to run programs makes it hard to start them manually.

2. I'm still getting the old launcher as the desktop, with no search box in the top bar. (In many respects having the old launcher isn't so bad, as I'm Not Friends with the new Unity side-panel.

I'm running the installer, and "Guided Partitioning" selected partition sizes I'm not completely happy with. I selected separate partitions for /home, /var, /usr, /tmp etc, and by default it gave me only 5GB for the /usr partition. I'd like to take some space away from /home and give it to the /usr partition, but I can't figure out how to do that using the menu options available.

Fedora Installation :: Nouveau Driver Reset To Defaults?

Jan 18, 2011

I installed the nvidia driver from the vendors homepage. But since it does not support regulation of brightness (and the display is that bright that I want to downlevel it), I wanted to go back to the default display driver which is the nouveau driver. So I uninstalled the nvidia driver and then I realized that I didn't make any backup of the xorg.conf file prior installing the nvidia driver. Shame on me, yeah. Now when the x-server started, it couldn't find the nvidia driver. Okay, fair as it was removed. Next to that my keyboard becomes unresponsive. That's really aching as I can not switch to a text-based console any longer.I'm able to boot into initmode 3 by editing the kernel parameters in the boatloader. I'm also able to edit the xorg.conf with vi in the shell then and start the xserver to test things by calling xinit.

I already tried to recover a bit from this situation by removing the references to the nvidia driver and replaced it with some information I could find on the nouveau homepage - but no luck so far, keyboard still freezes and login window does not appear. I could take a look into the xorg.0.log which warns me about the keyboard getting disabled but I do not really understand why. Next to that I find some other additional information. My computer experience is quite okay, but I'm somehow new to Fedora, I started half a year ago with Fedora 13 on my other laptop which worked like a breeze.

I wondered where I can find information about how to configure the xserver in the default configuration, if there is some reset functionality or so, that brings me back to installation defaults. Those worked ok for the nouveau driver. Unfourtionatly I was not able to gather the correct package name that would probably had helpded me by removing and installing it again.Next to fixing my setup, I had another idea as this is a quite new install to just re-run the install again on to that machine. Is this possible with keeping the files in my homedir?

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Defaults To KDE - Changing The Familiar Behaviour Of The Installer

Feb 8, 2011

I just finished reinstalling Squeeze on my little netbook using the debian-6.0.0-i386-netinst.iso and accepting just about all defaults, including that for the Desktop environment in tasksel. It appeared upon rebooting that, much to my surprise, KDE had been installed -- not the usual Gnome. Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with KDE, but changing the familiar behaviour of the Debian Installer (i.e. to install Gnome) without warning seems a bit much to this long-time Debian user...

Fedora :: Error Gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 When Choose A Minimal Install Then Add ONLY The Defaults Of The "GNOME Desktop" Package

When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

Ubuntu Installation :: Converting I386 To Amd64?

Feb 18, 2010

I recently upgraded my hardware and installed 32-bit Karmic (well really Mint 8 ) before realizing I would probably have gotten better performance from the amd64 architecture. Is it possible to convert an i386 system to amd64? Is it a good idea? Will there be a lot of problems afterwards? Is it easier to just backup home and etc, install a clean 64-bit system, then restore settings from backup? If I do convert the system, how do I do it? I thought I might be able to just install a different kernel but I can't find an amd64 kernel in the repositories..

I know this because I downloaded the torrent and "checked" the file hashes. A total of 5 "pieces" are missing.

Unfortunately, there is no one to seed. None! I am the only guy sharing 99.8%.

share this DVD? I just need to download 5 MB (1 MB for each piece).

Halfway through upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 (i386 desktop) using the Alternate CD, you are prompted to insert "Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100429)".Luckily, I'd already burnt a full installation CD so swapped this and the run continued for a moment. It then asked for the Alternate CD again (20100427.1).If you haven't got a full install CD handy before you start, you may not be able to complete the upgrade.
