I am trying to setup a putty session to putty from one Ubuntu machine to another. I know how to setup to connect to the machine from Windows and I am using the same settings for the one I am trying on the Ubuntu machine but it fails to connect. It fails immediately so I believe that putty is not able to find ssh. Is there some configuring that I need to do.

I am using putty to interact with Linux server. I have started a process using putty.
The process is running and will take 5-6 hours. I want that process to keep running after I close the putty session. How can I keep that process alive after closing the putty session? I do not want to keep the computer ON all the time. Is there any way to do this?.

If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.

I'm talking specifically about three functions that I'm missing from Windows world and could not find them in any terminal program in Linux.
1. When you select text in putty window the text is being automatically copied to clipboard - very useful.
2. When I move the cursor to another putty window and right click inside it - the text is being automatically paste inside this window.
3.When I click on a putty window with session running I can say: "duplicate session" - so great.
Why o why can't I get those in any Linux terminal ?I could get this wit CrossOver but surprisingly the Windows version of putty does not work under linux as it supposed to?

I am downloading a big file on linux VPS, and I am connecting remotely via Putty to do it? Once I initiated the wget command to download the file, if I close the putty window, will wget continue to download the file in the background even though the session is technically closed?

I tried to install Ubuntu in my P3 computer so i can play with it, everything works fine but not after i reboot it. Now i got the user and password window on the desktop and drop-down-list of sessions, language, keyboard, date & Time and Shutdown button at the bottom.
Drop-down-list session:
Recovery Console
Ubuntu Desktop Edition
Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Safe Mode)
User Defined Session
With these 4 options, the third one which is the safe mode is the only option I was able to get through. Others are just desktop without toolbar or anything, right click with folder option are working though. Recovery console is just the CLI window but I don't know anything about Linux commands.

I have a simple server running Ubuntu Server. Usually the server connects to the network by Wifi, so there is usually no cable connected to the Ethernet port. I noticed that there is a dhclient3 running on eth0 anyway. It is causing undesirable disk activity. Obviously, it is never going to get a response as long as no cable is connected. I can kill the responsible process manually, but I wonder first what is starting the process and how I can prevent it from being started. If there is a way to get the server to boot without starting this process, I wonder whether this is the right solution. Connecting to the network by Ethernet is the failsafe when Wifi doesn't work. I guess what I would like to see would be a way for the server to detect when eth0 does not have a cable connected and not start dhclient in that case, but to activate dhclient when a cable is connected.

I am using ubuntu 11.04 on dell insprion 1545. But I am facing a problem that when I start laptop a message shows on the black screen that says
Ubuntu is running in low graphic mode. Your screen, graphic card and input device setting could not be detected correctly, you will need to configure these yourself
I have read that there is a file Xorg.conf that contain the graphics card information. I have also use the command
sudo cp /etc/x11/xorg.conf /etc/x11/xord.conf_backup
but its not working.

The above subject was one of the options I was given on the boot up of Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) after the message 'Your screen graphics card and input device could not be detected correctly'
I OK'd the message to run in low graphics mode.
The question is: What's causing this? I've had a look through previous posts with (apparently) the same problem, but the methods used were inconclusive, even though in some cases the problem was resolved.
Nvidia was mentioned - about deleting all references to it in Packet manager. Would this work? And if so, why?
This was one of the lines of an LSPCI command in terminal...

I searched and found several solution but those are distro specific. I need to find out if distro is running in live mode (from CD, USB) instead it's installed on hdisk. The solution should be independent of distribution.

I'm currently working on a workaround for a problem I'm having. After I resume from suspend, sometimes I get an error that stops me from getting back in correctly and I get dropped to a terminal. If I hot Control-Alt-F1, I can login via text. If I run startx, I get an error saying that X is already running. I'd like to either via a script or some command, get back into my existing X session. I've done some Google searching but I can't seem to find out how to do this. As it is now I have to kill KDM and restart X, which isn't quite as elegant as I'd like.

I have both a mac and ubuntu box sitting on my desk. I work on the mac and access the ubuntu box over ssh.Often I need the point-and-click interface of the ubuntu box, at which point I run gnome-session. The problem is that the top and bottom menu bars fill the full size available to them, which can cause me problems (I use two different-sized screens and the barsget hidden), and overall it looks very messy. I would therefore like to confine the gnome-session to a window, much like you get with vnc (or parallels if you're running a virtual ubuntu session).

My University gives us access to a Linux server, named stud1.
Code:

<snip>
me pts/58 Dec 30 19:13
but when trying to find out why I'm still logged in, I can't find it:
Code:
me@stud1:~$ ps faux |grep me

how can I logout this unused session?

I frequently access my home computer throughout the day in two ways: either locally, or remotely using nxserver/nxclient. That is, I want all the active windows related to the app to disappear from one desktop,

After doing the above again, three instances of Skype are starting up every time.

How do I obtain information about the running x-server from a remote shell session? I want to know things like resolution, color depth, etc. My xorg.conf is basically empty. The only thing I can think of doing is to read the Xorg.0.log file which seems inefficient.
I thought that 'xrandr' displayed some text output but that behavior has changed (?). It seems to require an X display. Is there another way? Something I could incorporate into a shell script? (This is Fedora but that shouldn't really matter)

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

I used to use kubuntu last years, but I decide to give Ubuntu a try instead.A thing that was working on kubuntu's KDE by default, is that when you close your session, the system remembers what applications was you using, so in the next boot up they will be open exactly as it was.I would like to have this feature also on my Ubuntu 10.04, but I've been not lucky searching for the option to enable it.

I have ubuntu 10.04 & I telnet to windows vista. Even if I create a hidden process [URL].. from batch file . It seems the process gets killed when I end connection at port 23 to host. Maybe , the hidden process created is still child of current telnet session so tree is killed as session ends. Is there a way to keep process running even after telnet session has ended ?

Running Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.04 over LAN; I can SSH -X into my server just fine, and am able to launch various applications (Nautilus, Gnome-Terminal, Disk Utility, etc) but I'd really like a Gnome desktop. When I've tried the various StartX commands and gnome-session, but something just isn't clicking. Is there a way to have a 'second' Gnome session running on the client over the first?
To pre-empt some obvious solutions; I don't wish to use VNC, the lag drives me nuts, and I'd like to keep my gnome session running on the client machine if possible. If it's not possible, that's fine; it just seems like there'd be a way to do it?
