View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running 8.04 LTS on a Dell Inspiron 1525. Update Manager lists a bunch of items that just stay there forever - they never update, they never go away and the check boxes cannot even be checked.
Alot of these are "language-pack-gnome-xxx" updates. I also have one "skype" update that never goes away and can't be checked.Something's wrong and I don't know how to fix it.I want to eventually upgrade the entire OS but I am afraid to do so if my system has problems. I want the update manager window to be completely empty. I want these items to actually update or go away.
I don't have a degree in computer science so please be easy on me when it comes to terminal commands.I tried searching for this problem and, although I'm sure the topic has come up before, I can't seem to find a set of search terms that puts the topic within the top 10 results.
i know i have been having a lot of problems, but i keep having more this time, i ran update manager, and noticed that i was getting a new image, but i quickly forgot this. then, while installling the updates, it asked me if i wanted to keep my old menu.lst. i told it to keep my old one, since it worked fine. it then told me that i needed to restart, so i did. it got to where it would normally start loading grub, but my computer wouldn't go any farther. (would not load grub) i would think that it would still load my old image. i am writing this while running a liveUSB.
i ran the boot info script, and attached its output. i know this should be posted under installation&upgrades, but general help seems to be much more active. because of this, my father doesn't want me updating any more.
I am running Slackware64-current(multi-lib) and I have stumbled across something that I don't fully understand.I have read that the kernel-headers should not be updated as glibc is compiled against them and therefore requires that set of kernel headers. Recently the kernel version has been bumped a couple of times but glibc has stayed the same.Should glibc be re-compiled each time there is a kernel update?
Perhaps someone can explain, in very simple terms, the relationship between the kernel, the kernel headers, the kernel modules and glibc.
I havent used Linux in a long time. I dug up an old copy of Suse (version8.2), and installed it on an old 599MHZ PC. Ive been trying to update the various libraries to be able to get a updated version of Firefox installed. Is there any chance that this can work? I need to know if Im wasting my time and should just put winxp on this PC. Also, I cant get any repositories working. I assume the default ones I have on the Suse installation are bad and the ones for the later versions will not work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am creating custom install media using the Fedora Core 14 DVD as a base and I have gathered all of the packages and their dependencies I require using the yumdownloader command.I made sure to download the @core group along with the ones listed above. The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to update the media's repo information to reflect some of the updated packages I have downloaded. So when I go to install on the device, it's saying it can't read/open a certain package and you can see that it's looking for an older version because I'm guessing its repo is telling anaconda that this is the specific version to look for. I'm looking for a way to "update" the repo found on the installation media.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get RHEL5.3 booting on an IBM Blade off a SAN disk, but it refuses. Our storage is presented on LUN 1 as due to the IBM XIV SAN, we cannot use LUN 0 when presenting volumes. We believe that when the installer tries to configure the boot LUN, it expects to see it on LUN 0 but we can't use that. This leads to a problem where after installed Red Hat, it asks me to remove the CD and reboot, but doesn't load anything other than a cursor blinking at me on the monitor.I currently can't change the LUN ID on the SAN, so I've been trying to amend things to get it to work with no joy.
