View 3 RepliesI was wondering if anyone knows of an upload manager, either native or wine, that allows the control of upload speed? I have one of those broadband plans that severely restricts upstream bandwidth, and while I'm uploading there is no room left for upstream communication, so I can't do anything else online but upload (boring). If I can limit my upstream speed to, say, 20KBps, it essentially frees all my downstream bandwidth and I can actually use my computer.
Currently, I've only tried plowshare for uploading, and though it seems to work well, it doesn't allow shaping...
I'm probably doing something stupid, but I thought I'd ask here, because I'm stumped. I'm on slackware 12.2, KDE 3.5 and AIR 2.02.When Echofon abruptly stopped linux support, I switched to tweetdeck (v. 0.34.3.2). It worked great, and they recently pushed a new update. I installed it, deleted the ELS directory in ~/.appdata/Adobe/AIR, and it was unable to find any stored data in kwalletmanager. (I got the error that it wasn't able to find any stored data and that AIR isn't installed properly--the error one gets when tweetdeck is started without kwalletmanager running.)
I deleted the entry in kwalletmanager for AIR, deleted the ELS directory again, and restarted it. Same error, and no new entry in kwalletmanager was made. I downgraded to the previous version (0.32.3.2), and it worked perfectly once more.
Yesterday I adjusted the position of the windows controls back to what it was before, by using the configuration editor to set apps / metacity / general / button layout to "menu:minimize,maximize,close". At the time everything seemed good, the buttons moved, and it all worked. This morning I rebooted back into Lucid Lynx Ubuntu 64 bit, and now I find there are no controls on the windows, and I cannot even click and drag them, or double click the title bar to maximize! I checked, and the string I altered is still the same. I can still move windows with Alt-F7 and the mouse, and can resize by dragging out the bottom right corner.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have embedded a video into one of my website's pages but when I go to the page, using Firefox, the video, which plays automatically, has no controls for play, pause, stop etc which means you have to exit the page to stop the video (if you don't want to watch at the time) It is also the same where it is uploaded to [URL] or Hideho Takagawa When viewing through either Seamonkey, Opera or even Konqueror the controls are visible on both places. here's the embedding code I used.

Edit: I've actually found the solution, I had more than one mozilla plugin installed and as soon as I left myself with the gecko plug in everything works fine
My DVD player attached to my TV is picky. Burn CD's (with avi files) at 8X and it plays them. 16X and it complains about bad disk. Every time. In karmic, I can only get cdrecord to burn at 16x.
Here's the command:
cdrecord -dev=/dev/scd0 -speed=8 -dao -pad -v something.iso
And it burns at 16x instead of 8x. Command issued with root privilege. Identical hardware under CentOS 5.x and it burns at 8x, like I asked it to. I'm all SATA if it matters. What do I need to do to get the version of cdrecord with karmic to burn a data CD at 8x? For whatever reason, CDs burned at 16x just don't work in the DVD player attached to my TV.
My machine has 4 SATA 2 West Digital 1TB disks. I made 2 partitions on each of them, 500GB for each partition. When I started using them I check their I/O using iozone. The first partition has 100MB/s for read, 70MB/s for write. And the second partition has 80MB/s for read, 55MB/s for write. All 4 disks has the same result.
As I use on, the I/O speed on each partition decrease, to different extend. For example, for the 4 first partitions, the write speed varies from 69MB/s to 56MB/s. And I have same amount of data on each of them, all used 11%.
My guess for this is the disk block allocation policy. This is caused because some disk starts writing from inner location while others writes on the outer edge, even though amount of data on each disk is the same.
I have a need of a database, and the information to go into it. I know how I want to organise my data for optimal cross referencing, but what I know is merely what I know and I do not know if what I know is what is known...
Madness to say... looking at my database I see this is the best way to organise the data, but what I do not know is how the computer will respond to my methodical madness.
Is it quicker to have one table with many fields or many tables with few fields?
We've got information for 10 users with 17 idiosyncrasies.
So, would one table with 17 columns and 10 rows... or... a group of 50 tables with one column and 3 rows and one table with 4 columns and 5 rows...

The queries and modifications will be daily, and constant. These numbers are really much larger but the math is easier for me to articulate on a smaller scale. I use Perl, php, and C with SQL for management.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am installing a custom 8.04 live disk (basically, a mirror of my whole system with user data intact, sans all non-OS files) from a USB key with remastersys for the .iso creation, and UNetbootin for the bootable USB on a brand new 120GB PATA WD HDD. Both do nicely so far, so I have a working livedisk to use until I need to install Ubuntu to the drive.
I had a pure linux box, but I need to add XP with dual booting now- I have to use Autodesk Inventor 2010 software for my college class on my laptop, so I don't drive 30 miles to use the 1 computer lab equipped with that software. I'm not new to Linux, but I am new to more in-depth partitioning. I've taken the lead and looked into things- read this good guide, among others:

Problem is, until now, I've put everything on a single partition because I didn't know better. Now I do, but am a bit confused with all the guides as to what's most efficient, especially in my case where full RAM speed is crucial to running a single program.
Here's what I know I need to do: 1. The Windows XP install I know needs from 20-30GB for Inventor 2010 LT to work well. I don't need anything else in XP spacewise- it's just being added for Inventor. 2. I'd like to create a separate /home partition for Ubuntu this time to save my user data, making future upgrades much more painless (I will be getting Lucid soon). How that works when upgrading, though, I don't know yet..
3. I'd like both OSes to share all my personal files (docs, pics, music, Inventor design files) if it is an efficient choice that works without problems.
4. Finally, because 2GB is minimum for Inventor to run decently, I need to maximize the speed of my RAM for it- from my reading, these so-called "swap" partitions can somehow be added for buffering this- people seem to sugguest the swap be half the size of the RAM for fastest speed, and some say add separate /usr or other partitions. I'm not clear on what would be most efficient for me.
I have limited HDD space- because of my laptop's BIOS, this single 120GB drive is the biggest I can get on my laptop, so efficient partitioning would make a huge difference for me. Before this, a 60GB HDD was in this. I'd like to see some added space for my data storage, but still keep things as fast as possible for Inventor when I use it, and Ubuntu.
i am trying to figure out what my real internet connection speed is. when testing in speedtest, speakeasy and similar sites i get from 5 to 7,5 mbps in downloading (my line is 8 mbps). but when downloading something from the net the max speed i get is 900 kbps

It sounds weird but on Linux I can't find a browser that allows to set a download speed limit. I found an extension for Firefox but it works only on Windows. I know the existence of download managers like d4x, wget, jdownloader, etc... but some downloads can only be done by browser. I know trickle too but if I want to change the speed limit I have to 'restart' the command (interrupting the current download). Then I didn't find an extension for Chromium.

Similar is the case with upload speed. I'm trying to recover my Western Digtal 500GB hd (connected through IDE), I've already succesfully recoverd 80GB with copyr.dma (didn't have a bigger IDE drive laying around). and want to do the rest of the drive with GNU ddrescue. I use the Parted Magic live cd to do this. The problem is that I can't find my HD, although it is listed when I look in the Hardware info app. How can I access it as /dev/hda or /dev/sda or whatever it wants?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

Sometimes I notice that there is high upload speeds for 10 minutes or so. At the time of the screenshot I was sitting in a public wireless place, only chromium was open and I don't see any reason why there should be sustained upload speeds.Is there a GUI or CLI so I can find out which process uses the internet?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

i both have the same problem, i'm trying to burn my images at 4 or 8 speed, but ubuntu 10.04 says that the hardware does not support that kind of speed and switch up to 16 speed and more. i know it can burn at low speeds, at least in windows, it is a bit strange that fast burning is okee, and slow not, what can i do to prevent this? i don't wanna burn to much errors on my discs

Now, for the first time in many years, I find it necessary to extract specific data from received .pdf files. According to OpenOffice, editing of these files is only possible from version 3.2. My concern is whether this later vesion will be compatible with 11.2.OpenOffice installed is 3.1.1.4-1.1.4-i586. The same question has been directed to their Forum.

I am unable to burn data cd's. I tried both k3b and Brasero. Both of them seems to be burning but about 70% through both say unknown error and ejects the cd. I am using cd-rw. I tried different cd's but the error is the same.
