Security :: Unable To Decrypt Data?

May 6, 2010

I need to be able to decrypt data, like simple text files, that have been encrypted and base64 encoded with my public key.I need to use openssl so i do:

Code:
$cat encrypted | openssl enc -base64 -d > ./answer.txt

and i get exactly the same data as before the command was run. Am i right in thinking that i need to decode before decrypting? I tried decrypting, before i realized that i had to decode first, using this command:

However when I try and vi the encrypted file it does not prompt me for my pass phrase. I just get this:

Ubuntu Security :: Small Portable Encrypt/decrypt Programme ?

Mar 31, 2011

I was wondering if any free, small, portable, cross platform programme exists for encrypting/decrpyitng simple txt files?

I know a couple of small ones for windows systems (nosee, dscrypt) but i wonder if there is any i could use on both linux and windows OS. the idea is to be able to carry it on USB key and the programme (or probably there will have to be 2 versions of it) would run either on windows or linux os and i could decrypt and encrypt the file if i needed to. no matter on what system i plug the USB key to.

Ubuntu Security :: UNABLE - Access Private Data Desktop

Oct 12, 2010

I have a seperate partition for my "/home" folder. Whenever I install a new distro I format my "/" folder.

This way I was able to access my old home data files since I install using a different username. Everything worked fine until last Sunday.

10.10, unlike other versions of ubuntu, has encrypted my old username in my home folder.

Then using this document [url]

I was able to mount my hard drive again. But all the file and folder names are like this.

Btw I don't remember selecting an option to encrypt my old home directory in the first place, what is this ?

Ubuntu Security :: Ecryptfs Doesn't Auto-decrypt With Auto-login

Jan 6, 2011

I recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.

However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):

1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc

and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).

Security :: Unable To Use Windows To Change The Security Of The Samba Share?

Mar 19, 2010

I've got a samba share on a linux server, connecting to it with a windows 2k3 server via tools > map network drive. The goal is to be able to use windows to change the security of the samba share. The good news is it works! The bad news is it's not QUITE perfect:

The share is called /company. I started with the following to give everyone access to everything, set the owner of the share to administrator (my domain admin on the Windows domain), and set the group owner to domain users (group that everyone on the domain is part of):

Code:
chmod -R 777 /company
chown -R administrator /company
chgrp -R domain users /company

I then mapped the drive as a regular user, and of course, can access/modify/delete/rename/create anything I want. Then I picked a folder to lock down. Let's call it /company/myFolder. I did this on the Windows server by mapping the drive as administrator (the owner), right click > properties > security tab > advanced > highlight "domain users" and "everyone" and click edit > clear all (i.e. remove all access). Go back to Linux and

[Code]..

The only issue that remains is that I am able to rename/delete "myFolder" as a regular user. I thought this was coming from the "acl map full control = true" parameter in smb.conf, but I changed it to false and verified the change and it still happens. If I remove group and world write access to /company, I am no longer allowed to rename/delete myFolder, but then I can't create a new folder. If I add group write access back in I can create files but can also rename/delete folders within /company that have --- specified for group access. Any ideas what I need to tweak to make this right?

Security :: Data Recovery Crashed ATA HDD

Jul 14, 2010

A friend has a embedded system (korg recorder) with a ata drive in it, that crashed. We are trying to come up with ways to retrieve the data off of the drive. I'm asking in security as this seems like it would be close to forensics, hence security. Hints on software for linux to help either recover files, move files, copy/clone the drive? I'm not so concerned about the korg's os on the drive, as we can create a new blank drive and install that, its the data that is critical, that needs to be recovered. The original korg os was only recognizing drives up to 100gbs so I'm guessing this might be a fat16 filesystem if that helps. Well, that and the program installed to the drive to run it in the korg is an exe.

Fedora Security :: Turn Off Ordered Data Mode?

Dec 8, 2009

I am currently trying to turn off ordered data mode for ext3 filesystem. I want to shred some files and apparently this won't work with journaling on.

I can't seem to find any good explanations of what exactly "ordered data" means in terms of data recovery/security...or at least none that are written in simple n00b terms. It is all written in terms of disk crashes and whether old data will mix in with the new. It doesn't say whether one's cousin will be able to poke around and find some thought-it-was-deleted porno if he's on the computer.

Can someone step me through the process of turning this off using tune2fs? (if that is the best way to do it!) Do I have to revert to ext2? Can I turn it back on later? Will I lose data (for example, does the drive need to be reformated?) once this change is made? And how does one find, read, and delete/shred the journal itself? Is "ordered data" even a real problem for data recovery?

Does anyone know of any software that can monitor the Apache logs for certain phrases or keywords then send an alert when found? For example I know an attempt to hack has been made when I see log entries like this....

But by the time I see it, the attempt has long since failed or succeeded. What I need is a way for my server to alert me WHILE someone is entering these phrases. I realize there may be a "hit" to performance but my server is not that busy anyway (except for hackers).

Security :: Connect To Another Server (B) To Transfer Data Everyday?

Apr 13, 2010

I have a server A that needs to connect to another server (B) to transfer data everyday.[A] ==SFTP==> [B]

I am using SFTP for the data transfert between A and B. I configured B to allow authentication only with a key, not with password. However, anybody who acccess the filesystem of A, could steal the password.

So I thought I could password protect the private key from A. But in such a case, I need to store the password somewhere on A, so the server A can access the private key to connect to B. Finally, it is endless: i always have to store somewhere a secret on A. Is there another solution that allow to have an authentication between A and B without storing plain text secret on the server A ?
