Hardware :: Can't Get Movies (dvds Or Files) To Play Properly?
Feb 3, 2010
I just built a new Linux box & cannot get Movies (dvds or files) to play properly.
Xine playback is jittery but audio stays in sync with video.
Xine complains about "Too Many Dropped Frames"
Mplayer playback is ok but audio & video are way out of sync.
Mplayer says my system is "Too Slow"
I think it might be a RADEON driver issue because my Mandriva-2009.1 uses X.org version: 1.6.1 & maybe those drivers (radeon_drv.so) don't fully support the ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU. I know there is a prorietory driver (fglrx) but before trying it I'd like to here what you think. Here is some relevant info about my computer:
Motherboard
Asus M4A785T-M
CPU AMD Athlon II (X2) Soscket AM3
Chipset AMD 785G/SB710
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU (integrated)
[Code]...
Sorry this post is so long. I know it isn't easy to sift thru a long post because that is exactly what I've been doing this past week while try ing to get a solution.

I owned a eee pc 900HA netbook which I installed with Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP on separate partition...
I've been using Ubuntu for almost 2 years now and the thing is, I still got this problem since 9.10.
In Windows, I was able to play an .mkv files fully playable on 480p but not with 720p. In Ubuntu, it have problem even playing 480p mkv files and also with flv 480p. 720p is already out of question. By default, it'll download a codec used to play mkv files when the first time I try to run the video.
I have no problem with playing other format (AVI, OGG) on 480p or lower mkv, flv resolution. Is there a reason why it can't run normally on Ubuntu but perfectly rendered in Windows?
I've try almost all codec (mplayer, totem, vlc) but still have problem running at full speed.

For some reason, audio and video doesn't sync while playing MP4 video files. I have tried many MP4 files to confirm this is not specific file related issue. I have tried both VLC and Mplayer. Sound track doesn't sync with video track.

I was wondering if it was possible to play .bin/.cue movies. I was able to do it with daemon tools in windows and acetoneiso doesn't seem to like the file format. I was led to bchunk but the isos it made seem to be corrupt. Any way to play these movies?

I am trying to set up a new HTPC and at the recommendation of those from this forum I installed MythUbuntu. My HTPC includes an Asus Blu-ray player. However MythUbuntu will not play my blu-ray disks. It will play regular DVDs just fine. What do I need to do for MythUbuntu to play Blu-ray disks?

Well, I have a problem. I can't play any movies (.avi, .mpg, .wmv) with any reproductor. Everytime i open a movie with any player, the player closes immediately. I try with VLC "Tools --> Preferences --> Video --> Display --> Output" and i can see movies, but with a very very bad quality and the films stopped very times.

I can play many of my DVD movies in linux but there are some DVDs that won't play and the Available Devices notifier doesn't show up when I load these DVDs.
The DVDs that won't play in linux works fine in windows and my tabletop dvd player.
I do have libdvdcss2, libdvdread4 and other modules to play both encrypted and non-encrypted DVDs.
Like I said, I can play many of my dvd movies in linux with only a few that don't. Has anyone experience this situation in linux with some of your own DVD movies?

I want to cancel our cable tv. We don't really use it except for the kids and they don't care what's on as long as it's animated.
That being said, we have a ton of kid movies we want to try to burn to the computer and share those to the XBox. I know that Windows has a way of sharing files using Windows Media Player and sharing to the XBox, but I wasn't sure if there was another way.

I'm able to open DVD data discs, it's just playing DVD movies which is the problem now.
I've followed the official ubuntu guide on this and it hasn't worked. Even with all the numerous posts regarding the matter I'm still unable to find a fix.
Thus I'm posting here. If I can't get this to work I'm fooking back off to Windows because I've wasted far too many hours as it is.
I'm running P4 2.4 Ghz, NEC 2500a DVD-RW drive. I've also got two other DVD drives, a Pioneer slot drive which I get the exact same problem and another one which I haven't tested yet as it appears to be a software problem.
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier

Im trying to use my laptops with an external monitor. ThinkPad T60 with Mobility Radeon X1300, and Slackware 13.0 works flawlessly. Unfortunately I encountered problems concerning ThinkPad T40 with Radeon Mobility 7500, Slackware 13.0, and Linux Mint 8. I tried to play movies using MPlayer, Xine, and Totem. In all cases I can watch movies on the laptops LCD but on the monitor instead of a movie I see blank blue video screen.
I found here an old bug report concerning similar problem. Ubuntus users of machines with Radeon 7500 updating systems from Feisty to Gutsy reported problems with playing movies. Some further information I found here.
In the above threads SteveGotthardt and eliza reported that the problem disappears after switching from 16-bit to 24-bit color depth but desperately-trying-to-go-ubuntu reported it doesnt work for him. User anewguy suggested to run two instances of the same player to test whether its an overlay problem and Roy Kimbrell wrote he had to run two different programs to perform that test. User tgwit didnt encounter any problems with MPlayer and VLC, and solved the problem with Kaffeine changing video driver to xshm.
I tried all these methods. In my case changing color depth from 16-bit to 24-bit helped nothing. I was also unable to run two instances of the same or two different movie players to ensure its the overlay problem. I switched Xine to the advanced mode and changed the video driver to xshm but in result the movies dont play smoothly and pictures are visibly pixelizated. I can also use MPlayer with x11 video driver it plays movies on the external monitor but doesnt allow to scale the pictures to full screen. Both these alternatives arent satisfactory.

Since updating to Lucid I have not been able to properly burn DVDs and CDs. I have looked everywhere for a solution to this and have been able to get some functionality but not full functionality. I am using Brasero as I find it nice and easy to use. I read somewhere to get libburn4. Since I did that, I managed to Burn an Audio CD, and today I have managed to Burn an ISO of Ubuntu 10.04, so that is at least some function back.
I cannot burn Data CDs or DVDs. I have a few .avi files I wanted to burn on a Data Disc as burning as a movie to DVD means that I would have to waste loads of discs. I can't seem to burn any Data DVDs. To check that this wasn't just a dodgey blank disk I have tried burning data CDs using lots of albums on the CD. Still no luck. What seems to happen is that it generates a checksum then the box with estimated time remaining, write speed and progress comes up. It hangs for a minute then spits the disk out.

I'm running Fedora 13 on my Toshiba laptop and I cant play DVDs. If I try to play a DVD using VLC player nothing seems to happen. A similar thing happens if I try to watch it in the "Dragon Player" that came with Fedora, except it doesn't play any videos at all (that's why I downloaded VLC). How can I get DVDs to play?

I have used my PC for watching videos for some time. Normalmente with VLC under Ubuntu 10.4. Recently though I have two videos I brought from the States (I am in Argentina) and neither will work. They are ok on my DVD player, but not on the PC. In VLC the control pannel opens, but the video window opens a second and closes. In the Mplayer it says it could not read from source.

I have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?

I can't play movies when I have browsers open. I am not sure if it is the browser, or what. I ran totem, and vlc in a terminal, and it says insufficient resources when I try to open a movie (see snapshot).
I also took a snapshot of my system monitor. I am not sure what resources it is talking about?

I recently got a signal conversion box so I could route my netbooks monitor-out port to my TV. The idea being that I could effectively set the TV up as a separate monitor for watching movies on whilst I worked using the netbooks own monitor. It seemed to work initially, the Monitors dialog box could easily detect and setup the TV as if it were just an external monitor however I can't seem to play any kind of video on either screen when this is set up. All I get in Totem, Mplayer, VLC and skype is just a black area within the applications window. The sound works fine so this is clearly just a video problem.
It only seems to occur when I configure the system to use the TV as a separate monitor. If I tell it to display the same thing on both monitors all video output works fine.

I was wondering if there's another way than gecko-mediaplayer to play divx movies on the web. In chromium gecko sometimes freezes, usually when only 10 minutes are left from the movie and that's just freaking annoying, and you can't fast forward or backward also. Though it has some good things too I would like to know if there's an alternative for it in chromium, something like using vlc as in firefox.
