Software :: (ns)sbackup.conf File Meanings?
Sep 15, 2010
Using NSsbackup on Ubunu 10.04 desktop. Generally all is successful - except for two things.First: If my USB WD Passport destination drive is not awake at the time the backup is started, the backup fails. But if I run ls -al on the drive, that wakes it up enough to take the backup. How to deal with this problem?Second, I have a question on the meanings of one of the commands: "format". In some examples I see "format = none", in others "format=1".What do these mean? Is this related to what type of compression might be being used after the tarball is created? Compression typethat name) is not mentioned in the/etc/nssbackup.conf file, for instance.

I've just done a fresh install of Lubuntu 10.10 on an older Sony Vaio laptop. Having learned the hard way about editing xorg files, I wanted to create a backup of the xorg.conf file so that I dont have to do another install when I screw everything up. In a terminal, I typed

This is prolly a quickee, but I not able to figure it out.
I am using sbackup installed on karmic 9.10.
I am using the gui driven sbackup, and the field below needs a passwrd:
ssh://usernameassword@192.168.1.201:/usr/home/username/BAK/
This is a remote backup to a backup storage server.
Nothing fancy, just need to know how to escape a assword@ were the real password uses non numeric/alpha characters.
my passwd includes an "@" so would i use quotes? backticks? backslashes?
Using a passwd like ab34f67 will not work, i use shift'd chars like ^&*@ so forth in my passwrds.

I moved up to 10.4 which is working great. I backed up my files with Sbackup so now I'm trying to restore my Home folder but it appears that not all files are restored. I'm restoring from a "full" backup on an external drive. Dumb question: Do I need to restore all the directories (etc, home, usr, var) to get all my home folders/files restored? Or why don't all my Home foldersfiles show after restoring "Home"?
EditPerhaps I have an answer. It appears that I have to install individual folders/files. I assumed that if I selected the Home folder that all sub folder and files would be restored. Apparently not. I have restored individual sub-folders but not parent plus child directories.

It appears that backing up files is working, but when it comes torestore, with some files it works and with others it does not. When t does not, the message (Unable to finish successfully. TAR terminated with errors..) appears. It happened when usingoth compression formats of gzip and bzip2, so I tried no compression and got the same message. There was never a problem restoring the files in /home/bob/ but /usr/bin/dother directories did not work. The problems occurred in both a Dell and an HP netbook

I use subversion to check out some small projects and small games from time to time. Sometimes I see the 'U' which means upgrading coming in different places or even coming twice 'UU' . Now I always wondered if there is some specific reason why it comes out that. Here's an example of the check-out done from a game called dawn-rpg. As the name suggests its a role-playing game . dawn-rpg.sourceforge.net Anyway here's the checkout :-
[Code]...
Now see that all the deviations of U from third line as to how they appear ? Put simply 'A' is for addition of new files and 'U' is for upgrading/new version of somefile but do not undertand why it behaves/d that way. I have seen this in some others svn also.

There are several boot parameters shown when pressing the F6 key on the Ubuntu Maverick Alternate install CD. For example: ACPI=OFF
NOAPIC
NOLAPIC
NOMODESET
EXPERT MODE
Where do I find a "complete" explanation of what these parameters do, when it is appropriate to select them and HOW to select them?

I'm trying to get this rather troublesome (and poorly made, I might add) game to work correctly, and right now it has frozen to a black screen with a frozen cursor. I can't figure out how to shutdown X, but while this game is frozen as it is, I might as well figure out what the process status SL+ means. If anyone has a link to a list of process status codes and their meanings

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :
Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds
The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.

I am trying to follow the instructions in the smb.conf file which says, "name original file smb.conf.master and create the "real" config file with test parm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf".
First I made myself the owner of the smb.conf file. Then I tried to rename the smb.conf file to smb.conf.master. When I try to do this with: rename smb.conf smb.conf.master the result is: Bareword "smb" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1.Bareword "conf" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1.
Can someone tell me what this means, (why it is happening) and what do I need to do in order to rename the smb.conf file to smb.conf.master.

My sample rates are out of whack and I need to edit the daemon.conf file.
However if I use
Code:
It will open the file but will not let me edit at all. If I just navigate to it I can edit it, but I can not save it!
I tried going in as root from the terminal and using the code above and I get a weird error.
Something like:
Then it says core dump.
Am I missing something to be able to edit the daemon.conf ?

What drives me crazy is that I can't find this directory listed in /etc/samba/smb.conf, in a "path" line. Please tell me where is this directory specified, since smb.conf seems to be the only samba config file.

On a production Centos 5.3 system, I want to raise the hard & soft limits of open file handles from 1024 -> 8192 (not a "biggie", I'd think) Right now, "sysctl -a | grep file" shows fs.file-max=463144 (a default, I'd guess) I'm guessing file-max is the maximum number of open file handles on the system, vs the per-user limits seen with "ulimit -Hn" and "ulimit -Sn". Right? If so, I shouldn't think I'd have to touch this on a server with few users.
Also, after doing a lot of reading, I still don't understand the mentions of needing to also add: "session required pam_limits.so" to /etc/pam.d/loginor adding "session required /lib/security/$ISA/pam_limits.so" to /etc/pam.d/system-auth Maybe I've gotten off into the deep weeds in goggling about raising file handle limits.
