Finally I managed to install my printer/scanner drivers.The last thing I need to do is to add the following two lines to 40-libsane.rules (which is a read only file):# Brother scanners ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes".How can I change permissions for this file or add these lines without changing permissions?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :

The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.
I noticed that slapt-get excludes a lot of package titles based on aaa, glibc, and kernel. I've been wondering why, and haven't been able to find any definitive answers... Anyone here have any ideas on why that is? My Slackware installation is currently kernel 2.6.29.6 (I think) and the newest available on the official repositories is 2.6.32.5 (or something like that).
When I put in slapt-get --upgrade it spits out about 15 packages that are excluded that it won't upgrade. Now, I know I can remove the exclusions by editing the slapt-get configuration file, but I don't want to if it's going to screw something up. So my question is: Is there a reason those are excluded? Is it unsafe to upgrade the kernel with slapt-get?
some info on the drive - it's a USB 2.0 portable hard drive (PQI H560), one partition spanning all 640GB, NTFS. Used almost exclusively on Linux (arch and ubuntu), but initially formatted on Windows 7.The hard drive has quite a lot of hard links on it, as it was a timemachine-like backup system.And now the issue itself:Today I made the mistake of taking out my portable hard drive from my Linux system and plugging it in a Windows 7 box. Everything worked nice, I took a movie from the drive, and it lay dormant for an hour or so. After that I took the drive out (forgot to unmount :/) and put it back in my Linux.
Any idea why did it break so bad? I thought NTFS was kind of durable.Best if there would be something nondestructive (be able to get the data while preserving every bit of the drive in it's current state - just to be sure it doesn't break anything)

This program is known to use an unsafe operation on system memory but so are a number of malware/exploit programs which masquerade as wine. If you were attempting to run a Windows program your only choices are to allow this operation and reduce your system security against such malware or to refrain from running Windows applications under Linux. If you were not attempting to run a Windows application this indicates you are likely being attacked by some for of malware or program trying to exploit your system for nefarious purposes. My concern is if i hide this attempt, it will not stop wine to from trying to do it, only hide security alerts. This alert is occurred already nearly 5000 times in last 30 min and counting. Wine server is using 10% CPU on this, so only to hide alerts is not a solution, isn't it?

I do not want to reformat it from what it is, apparemtly NTFS.
Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.
I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.
I have system at work I am setting up that runs on linux, it was powered up back in september but we didn't get the details to configure until this week, unfortunatly var filled up with 100% spaced used due to a log file that keeps being written to until its intizilized, I can't just delete the file so (will not be recreated), I pulled it off and took it home and split it into a smaller file (from 740mb down to a 15mb chunk)I'm really just a linux newbie so can someone explain to me what the permissions are on the current file and then what chmod would make smaller file the same. clusternet.log is the orginal and clusternet1.log is the one i made from split. I know its read, write and execute (whats the r write after x on clusternet.log?) but I'm not sure on what it means in the position its in, the clusternet.log should have permissions only for root correct?

i am trying to set the file permissions for the log files "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and "/var/log/gdm/:0.log". These files seem to be created when a user logs into a whokstation (my guess so far). I am trying to comply with a security mandate that all log files in the directory /var/log are set to 0640. The two mentioned files always seem to have the permissions 0644, does anyone know where and when these filea are created and how I might set the permissions when the files are created

First I made myself the owner of the smb.conf file. Then I tried to rename the smb.conf file to smb.conf.master. When I try to do this with: rename smb.conf smb.conf.master the result is: Bareword "smb" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1.Bareword "conf" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (eval 1) line 1.
Can someone tell me what this means, (why it is happening) and what do I need to do in order to rename the smb.conf file to smb.conf.master.
Since the computer does not have xorg.conf, can I have the computer generate that file because I need to work on it and so I need to create it. That is why it would be useful to have a xorg.conf file still.

What drives me crazy is that I can't find this directory listed in /etc/samba/smb.conf, in a "path" line. View 5 Replies View RelatedAll I need to do is get my screen resolution to 1024x768, I can currently only get 800x600 and that's unacceptable for school. I created an xorg.conf file in Lucid and it does in fact refer to and use it. what led me to believe that is when I looked in the mirror and noticed smoke slowly rolling out of my ears! After replacing some of that smoke with a cigarette I decided to make this thread. As I said, I created the xorg.conf.new file with:

And that nested it right where it needs to be. X does in fact use it as confirmed by my Xorg.0.log.
Now I have an xorg.conf file, but am quickly becoming overwhelmed with information as to what to do. I've tried to create mode lines with xrandr, which gave me new settings, but I was unable to use them. Obviously the EDID info. is not being read because there is no mention of clock speed, Vsync or Hsync in my Xorg.0.log either. I have tried many things and really don't have time to spend all day at my computer, at least not with this issue. I'm in school and have to focus primarily on that right now. I will give what info I know is relevant starting with my monitor specs:

Every resource I've found on this subject talks about how you need to make a .conf file, then use wpa_supplicant. Is there a way to establish the connection without having to a create any file whatsoever? What are the steps for establishing the connection?
From what I've read, establishing a WEP connection is as simple as calling iwconfig and then dhclient. Are there similar steps for WPA2?
