Software :: Image Editing Program - Open Source
Jun 22, 2011
I do a lot of 3D modeling in blender and I would like a program for creating textures for my models. I have used gimp, and it does the job, but it just does not quite fit for me. I do not need anything too fancy. The things that I am looking for in a program are mainly as follows:Layers Image rotation Paint Fill and brush (add on brushes would be nice) Support for png and tiff Levels, curves, hue and saturation.
In short I would like a free (open source is preferred) alternative to something like pixelmater. I can use a cloud based alternative but I really would rather use a stand alone program as I do not always have internet connection. Does such a program exist? What would you use?

I was wondering, what would be a good, open-source file format for a beginner in the field, like me, to start editing sound files? This file format would have to be well documented, preferibly open-source, lossless and, most of all, convertible to more popular file formats, such as mp3 or wav maybe. I would like to design my own sound effects through directly editing the binary sequence of a sound file. I imagine this editing would have the purpose of adjusting the voltage variations of the sound device's output in time. It would be perhaps something like a PC-controlled signal generator. I'm thinking I might be able to do this in linux with something like
Code:
$ dd if=mysound.raw of=/dev/audio
But then, which book or resource woule be a good and through explenation of the relationship between the bit sequence in mysound.raw and the signal function generated in the output of, say, my computer's sound card.

Is there anything like burning rom from nero or roxio cd/dvd copier. Do you know of any dvd copying program? like without making the image and then burning with just one process just copy the disc sorta program like roxio dvd copier? I wanted to make copies of movies I made a dvd of but aside from image burn which is a hassle to make the image first. is there something for burning on the fly or dvd/cd copying? infrarecorder and cdburnerxp do not work for me at all.

My sister works a lot with boating frame design, etc. and she needs a program that calculates all the measurements for you, but the program she wants only runs on Windows and costs $275.
Here is the website to the program: http://www.clearwatercanvas.com/ and/or http://www.kingrichardco.com/FrameBenders/EZFrame.htm
Is there an open sourced alternative to this program that is free, or is there a simple way to make an open sourced alternative?

Anyone know of an Open Source ID/Badge Program? I'm looking into using it in a future business. I'm not worried about all the parts that go to it, just the program, for now.

The song book that we use at our church is rather pieced together, and I am looking for software that I can use to scan it all in, and set all the songs to the same font. The only thing I know of is Photoscore, but that is a little out of my budget. If you know of anything open source for Linux, that would be great.

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10
When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...
relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)

We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

create documentation with screenshots that have stuff on them indicated with arrows, circles, highlighted areas and the likes. I attemped to use the Gimp for this, but found out the app is clrealy not intended for such use. Then I tried LibreOffice draw, but it seems page-orientated, saving a whole bunch of whitespace I don't want after I imported an image and put stuff on top of it. A few quick searches did not yield anything looking very promising. So I'm looking for image editing apps in which doing these kind of simple operations is trivial, or even apps geared towards such tasks.

I want to be able to open a file (support for .mp3 and .ogg a must) and add effects, change pitch and tempo, add beats (either default or midi created), mix with other songs (or clips from), be able to change levels of the high/mid/low, alter gain and frequencies ... all that fun stuff.
programs I already have are:
MixXx
LMMS (Linux MuliMedia Studio)
mhWavedit
-and-
gAlan
And it doesn't seem that any of those have the features I am looking for. I am running Zorin OS 4 (ubuntu 11.04 based) and Dreamlinux 3.5 (debian- unsure which release) on a fujitsu lifebook 5 series - S6240 (it's kinda old 2005).

Stupid browser froze up when I tried to submit this before... *sigh* Anyway, is there a simple midi editor that that isn't Rosegarden and doesn't require JACK? Something would simply let me load a Soundfont, and then edit and export a multi-track midi file without a bunch of other stuff you have to do?

I am trying to find a way to get/read the C source code from a JFFS2 image file. All I have is the jffs2 file and nothing else. I was looking for some kind of converter or reader that would allow me to do this. I know very little about Linux. I need to give the source code to a developer to save time on a new version/redevelopment of the original application.
