View 9 Replies View RelatedI do a lot of 3D modeling in blender and I would like a program for creating textures for my models. I have used gimp, and it does the job, but it just does not quite fit for me. I do not need anything too fancy. The things that I am looking for in a program are mainly as follows:Layers Image rotation Paint Fill and brush (add on brushes would be nice) Support for png and tiff Levels, curves, hue and saturation.
In short I would like a free (open source is preferred) alternative to something like pixelmater. I can use a cloud based alternative but I really would rather use a stand alone program as I do not always have internet connection. Does such a program exist? What would you use?
I was wondering, what would be a good, open-source file format for a beginner in the field, like me, to start editing sound files? This file format would have to be well documented, preferibly open-source, lossless and, most of all, convertible to more popular file formats, such as mp3 or wav maybe. I would like to design my own sound effects through directly editing the binary sequence of a sound file. I imagine this editing would have the purpose of adjusting the voltage variations of the sound device's output in time. It would be perhaps something like a PC-controlled signal generator. I'm thinking I might be able to do this in linux with something like
Code:
$ dd if=mysound.raw of=/dev/audio
But then, which book or resource woule be a good and through explenation of the relationship between the bit sequence in mysound.raw and the signal function generated in the output of, say, my computer's sound card.
I have been using Linux for 2 months, specifically Ubuntu, and been wondering where the source code is. Not only do I wonder where the kernel source code is but also where the source code for the installed programs are.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded wine from a windows laptop, but because you have to have a computer running Linux to download it as a .deb package, I had to download the source code as a tar. bz2.
Does anyone know how I compile it and make it executable?
I was trying to install VPN client for my Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. During the installation process the terminal reads:
"Directory containing linux kernel source code [/lib/modules/2.6.31-21-generic/build]"
On that I pressed enter for the default option (in bold). After a few more steps I reached the following error:
Making module
sh: Can't open ./driver_build.sh
Failed to make module "cisco_ipsec.ko".
[/lib/modules/2.6.31-21-generic/build] is the location where the installer expects the kernel source to be (I am guessing). So unless I correct the terminal (by providing the location of the kernel source), I think I will keep on getting the same error message.
So to get the kernel source I visited: [URL]From there I copy pasted the command:
sudo apt-get build-dep --no-install-recommends linux-image-$(uname -r)
apt-get source linux-image-$(uname -r)
Everything went fine, but even now I don't know if at all I have a kernel source and where it exists on my machine.
I am following these instructions to install gnu backgammon. However I am doing this for the first time and I don't know how to get their source code from their site (here). Do I download everything?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been the webmaster of a webpage for a few years and I have always installed Apache and PHP using the source code. The reason is that I wanted to use a recent version of them and I couldn't find it in the repositories.
Now, we are going to purchase a new server with Ubuntu (we were using Fedora in the previous one) and I don't know if install those packages using synaptic (much easier) or install them from scratch using the source code.
Synaptic is great, specially installing modules for PHP, but I am afraid of not having updated versions in a few months.
I was wondering if there are any tools that automate the process of installing from source for example tar.gz or tar.bz2. I have used kludge installer but I am looking for something that doesn't make me install any dependencies for example I want a bash shell script it just runs the commands you normally do but faster.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem installing a program, AudioTester v1.6 and tests FLACs for errors. [URL]. The .zip file has a windows executable '.exe' and the source code. The code was written for Windows. The source code is written in C++ (.cpp) with C header (.h) files, xml (.vcproj) and one '.exe.manifest'(?) file. I tried the usual commands for compiling (./configure, autogen, make) the source code but no luck. Can I compile this code for Ubuntu/linux? Is there anything I can do with the code? And If so what do I need to do.
