I am trying to fix a perl script, and I really suck at perl. But I think this problem will be easy for people who know it.
The problem is, I have an old setup script someone wrote many years ago. It fails if the standard shell is dash and not bash. The only way I've gotten it to work is to point /bin/sh to bash. I looked thru the script and it uses "system" many places, and I think that's the problem.

My plan is to include this function:

The parameter to the system calls is usually some variable. What if the parameter is a list already? Do I need to test for it somehow, and if it's a list, prepend "bash" and "-c" to the list? How do I do that?
In the script there are lots of places like this:
my $error = system($cmd); if ($error) { die/warn "some error message"; }
Shouldn't there be a return in the system_bash function?
I've been dual-booting win7 and ubuntu on my comp for a while, but didn't bother updating grub. I just updated to grub 2, but it wouldn't let me boot and said my hard drive was missing, also giving me a grub safety command line.
I have a text file called namelist.wps. In this file there is a line that reads:Code: start_date = '2010-12-26_12:00:00', '2010-12-26_12:00:00', I have to automatically update the year, month, and day of month. I set values for the year, month, and day of month using the following code in a c-shell script:Code: set y1 = `date +%Y`set m1 = `date +%m`set d1 = `date +%d` After I do this, how do I update year, month, and day of month, without changing any of the other lines in the namelist.wps file?
Id like to share with you a strange behavior I�ve been seen with the printf C language function running in Fedora.The code opens a file as showed:descString = fopen( strcat( stringName, txt), a+);There are also some printf functions in the code.However, instead of the printf functions to print their content at the screen, theyve been printing them in the file with the descString file descriptor.Have you ever seen something like that?To print something to the file I use the fprintf function. I didn't make a mistake to confuse printf with fprintf. I'm sure.
$cmd If this script is executed, an error is generated. The reason written was that "The execution fails because the pipe is not expanded and is passed to date as an argument".What is meant by expansion of pipe. When we execute date | wc on the command line, it goes fine.then | is not treated as an argument. Why?
I am trying to learn how to pass more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal.
I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:
Code: #! /bin/bash # #TODO write this for gnome and xterm USAGE=" ${0##*/} [-x] [-g] code....
However, running with the -g option to invoke gnome-terminal, I get a "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" error.
This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to
Code: gnome-terminal -e mcTerm
Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.
For eg: $NUMBEROFPASSES=6.19 to round up I use NUMBEROFPASSES=$(printf %.0f $NUMBEROFPASSES) What I need to do is round up from eg: 6.10 to be 7 and if lower than 6.10 round down to 6
I got curious during the construction of my program to search for blocks of text that contain certain words, and wanted to print out blocks of text with the words I was searching for, initially, in ALL CAPS and seperated by tabs for easy identification. I am trying to port some "C" code from Solaris to Linux. I have a Dell PowerEdge R610 with an Intel Xeon E5504 quad core processor running Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.3. I am compiling in 64 bit mode. I have managed to get the code compiled and linked, but when I attempt to execute it, I get a core dump in one of the C library calls (like strcpy or printf.)
I have a static library that contains our own code that makes the call to the C library. If I move the library method into the source file with the main method and rename it to be certain that I am executing my method instead of the method in our library, the call succeeds. Eventually another static library call is made that results in a core dump in the shared object. I compile my library code into a static library with gcc as:
Have this script which is reading in a series of files, one at a time with while-do-done loop, each file goes through various greps/awk's where this info is then saved to various files for later use. i.e....

In one of the grep/awk's the output (currently) are 2 columns (min max), i.e....| awk '{print $1, $2}' | sort -u which outputs (e.g.)
The number of "min max" pairs varies from file to file. Want to output a single column of unique numbers from the min max pairs & get the number of them for input to a file...i.e...
Where <PROCESS> is some process/technique that will generate a single column of integers (increment of 1) to pipe into the next one (sort -u)

Have tried command seq - only works for single pair input i.e.
Is there any command like seq etc which will output a single column based on a input of min max numbers (increment 1) to pipe onwards to next command?
I am using openSUSE 10.3.When I install software from tarball then to record time required I send output of date to beg.txt(when installation begins) and end.txt (when installation finishes).How can I append output of date to a file so I don't need two files?
I'm building a script for my place of employment. The next step in it is checking what the user input was. Determining if they added a part in there or not. The script prompts for a hostname. Hostnames are localhost.localdomain. Now, I want the script to check to see if they put localdomain and if they did, not to add the domain to the /etc/sysconfig/network, but just what they entered. I need to write a script that will take 1 command line argument. The argument will be a username. The script will determine if the user exists on the system and will print an error if it does not. I am wanting to write a program that runs a program or command-line. Is there are way of making a program that activates a command-line (for example executing 'ps -a -f' or '/home/shared/fah').
In addition to that, I want the program to do a 'ps -a -f' and put the results in a buff, how could I do this.
I'm troubleshooting a batch of scripts I'm modifying, including an IDL script called by a .csh script. the IDL scripts were provided to me by a coworker and my .csh script is intended to automate a lengthy set of extremely tedious and time consuming processing tasks.
I am currently in the process of debugging, and can't get the IDL to print any messages other than critical failures to the screen. Is there any easy way to redirect the stdout to either a logfile or the screen?
I am taking an argument from the command prompt for my shell script ie $1 and i need to use $1 in my awk part of the script.But it actually doesn't get any value when used in awk. accessing this command line argument in awk?
