May 2, 2011
I am trying to get TightVNC to work on my laptop running slackware 13.1 32Bit but I am having a problem. Basically, tightvnc starts correctly, but when I login with the vncviewer from a remote machine, I see this error message on the virtual desktop:
Code:
Unable to contact settings server. Did not receive a reply.Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. Then I click "Close" and another error message appears:

I'm using Slackware 13 on my laptop, but when I remove the AC power adapter and try to boot slackware my X server doesnt start. I had the same problem with Slackware 12, but I fixed it with adding a line in xorg.conf. Something like this:
Option "PowerAdaptor...." Now I dont remember the exact line... I'm not so sure about this line in xorg.conf.

I've recently upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 13.0 and so far everything works fine with one exception: the TightVNC package that comes with Slackware-13.0 (in /extra) produces a garbled desktop. Applications look fine, but the default desktop of 13.0 is corrupted. Restarting the VNC server doesn't solve the problem. Before the upgrade, I had 1.3.9 compiled from source. I have just installed the 1.3.10 package that came with Slack-13.0 on top of what was there, hoping it would overwrite old files as needed (couldn't find an automatic uninstall procedure for 1.3.9).
I have attached a printscreen. Notice the taskbar and the top left quarter of the screen. Firefox seems to be rendered properly though. Has anyone encountered this before or may have a clue what could be causing it?

When either of the proprietary Nvidia drivers are enabled, viewing the desktop using a remote client (Windows TightVNC) does not work. The initial remote screen display is ok, but no updates to the remote display occur. Reverting back to the non-proprietary driver solves the problem. I have also tried using a 10.04 Live CD and used Remote Desktop Viewer on the client machine, and it behaves the same way.

I am getting a problem to run hugin 2010.2.0 in Slackware 13.1. After I installed all require programs (I hope that), I run hugin, but the error message show that:
bash-4.1# hugin Fatal Error: Mismatch between the program and library build versions detected. The library used 2.8 (no debug,Unicode, compiler with C++ ABI 1002,wx containers, compatible with 2.6),
and your program used 2.8 (no debug,Unicode, compiler with C++ ABI 1002,wx containers, compatible with 2.4,compatible with 2.6)." Is there anyone know how to fix this problem?

I am playing with SalixOS which is supposed to be entirely compatible with Slack. I've never put Slack proper on this laptop. It's run Ubuntu and Mandriva both and the volume wheel always works. It does not seem to be recognized in Salix. I figure the fix will be the same in Salix as Slackware so I'm asking here. The laptop is an A205 Toshiba Satellite.

I'm trying to run a library compiled in a 32bit Linux (CentOS) environment on my Fedora11 64bit image. I ran into a few issues with dependencies such as gcc, xml2, ssl plus a whole stack more that existed in /lib64 and no/lib where the binary was expecting them. After a bit of reading around, I found I needed to install the .i586 version of each of the dependencies. After adding most of them, I was left with libssl, libcrypto and libxml2. When I tried to do the following
Code:
yum install openssl.i586
I got an error stating it could not be copied due to a conflict with the i686 version. I was going to erase the i686 but it was going to remove a ton of other stuff so I created a symbolic link in /lib to point to 64bit version. Eventually, ldd had no missing dependencies so I figured I was good to go. I now get the following errors when I call my library
./SupervisionServer: /usr/lib/liblber-2.4.so.2: no version information available (required by /lib/libphp5.so)
./SupervisionServer: /usr/lib/libldap_r-2.4.so.2: no version information available (required by /lib/libphp5.so)
./SupervisionServer: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libpalo_ng.so.0: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied
PHP is installed and working and the libpalo_ng.so.0 is in the /lib folder

I'm currently running 32 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. Apparently, my computer can support 64bit OS. My / and /home partitions are separated and exist on different physical hard drives. Is it possible to just install 64bit ubuntu over my 32bit existing installation? Could I preserve the customizations I've made? what about application settings like chrome, firefox, compiz, etc.? Would I have to meticulously reinstall all of the little things I've done to my ubuntu installation?

Please tell me what I exactly have to type in the command prompt.

My pc has 4GB ram and I want it to use it entirely. With Slackware's 2.6.33.4-huge-smp kernel my system is only able to access 3287MB. So I built a new one (2.6.35.4) and used the Slackware's 2.6.33.4-huge-smp config as template. I kept High Memory Support with 4GB because I only have 4. Now I found out that I have to set High Memory Support to 64GB to activate PAE.
What's the sense about it? Should I really use this option? Although I only have 4GB memory I don't see disadvantages.

When I alter the acceleration or sensitivity within the pointer speed section of gnome-mouse-properties, my mouse does not act differently. Has anyone else encountered this problem? How can I change my mouse sensitivity? I have installed Debian Lenny previously and I recall that I was capable of changing the sensitivity.

I have a Debian Squeeze x64 VPS that I have been renting and I'm having some trouble getting the 32bit version of the Ventrilo server to run. I found alot of people with this problem since Ventrilo only has 32bit Linux servers and this solution seems to work for everybody but me. URL...t=798157 Could it be because of a newer version of ia32-libs is not providing a library that is considered obsolete but Ventrilo still needs?

i upgraded my netbook to slack-current (32bit) and now When booting up dmesg shows these errors:
Code:
[ 10.770199] [drm] detected 63M stolen memory, trimming to 32M
[ 10.770267] i915 0000:00:02.0: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X

[Code]....
This happened with generic stock kernel and is also happening with 2.6.36.2 zen kernel. Is it something serious? Kde compositing still works, except it locked up few times when i was testing how windows wobble in kde, but not recently.

I've done some investigating on the threads, but none of the normal fixes for this permission problem work. I've added myself to the scanner and lp groups. I've also added the right device code to the epson configuration file under /etc/sane.d/ . Scanner is recognized and works under root.
When I "scanimage >somefile" in the console I get a permission error when I'm a regular user; when I do the same under root, it works. Likewise, my graphical scan frontends report that they cannot find the scanner when I am a regular user. I see alien bob had an old workaround at [url] but I don't think 13.1 has hotplug set up the same way anymore.

Looking for moral support and guidance. Currently have 13.1 running nicely with the following partitions:
/swap
/
/home
/var
/usr/local
/notlinux (my name for a storage partition when I want to start all over again)
I have decided to tinker with Slack64-current with multilibs. My intent is to shrink /notlinux an add a new partition for 64's / . Then dual boot the system.
/swap and /usr/local
I see no problem with mounting these partitions in Slack64. I would have two 'tgz' directories [ tgz & tgz64 ] in /usr/local where I would seperate SBo packages (for my benefit). Don't know what having separate /tmp directories would have on sbopkg but that's not a material issue. confirm I can share these partitions.
/home
99 & 44/100 % sure if I changed/added my name from 'dad' to 'dad64' it would not be a problem sharing the /home directory. But what about keeping the same name/uid#, would things get fubared when I jump back and forth between 13.1 and current-64. Comments?
/var
Think I might be getting into trouble here. Suspect pkgtool, installpkg, upgradepkg ... would all continue to work because /var/log/packages would actually have different names [_64] for the 'same' package. At a minimum I want to share the mysql database so might have to create this as its own partition. Other than it would be a mess reading log file would sharing this directory be a major issue.

Why is it reading specs from lib64? code...

Short of the story is I have an AMD64bit system for my 'server'. I find that there is lacking package support for ubuntu 64bit. Some apps I want to install work fine on 32bit ubuntu but not in 64bit ubuntu. More importantly the 64bit package for my ati drivers don't work, however they do on a 32bit version of ubuntu.
It would make sense to do a fresh install of ubuntu 32bit to avoid problems like this in the future. However my server has been running for years.. since ubuntu6. And it is highly customized. It would take too long to configure my server from scratch, I really want to avoid that. So I'm wondering, next time I do a dist upgrade.. say from 9.10 to 10.04. Is there a way I could trick the update manager in to upgrading to 32bit packages/kernel etc?

I am thinking about upgrading to 64bit Ubuntu 10.10 because I have heard it's good for gaming and makes things run smoother. Also, I know it's the new thing and I'm going to have to switch eventually. Point is I don't want to loose my data with the clean install and I was wondering if I backup my current system, which is 32bit (assuming there is a backup utility, I thought I saw one) will I be able to load that on my new 64bit install?

What would be the advantage of running a 64bit system over a 32bit system? I only have 3GB of ram but plan on kickin another 1GIG into it. But i wanna try 64bit Linux(probably slackware) on it. But first im just wondering what the advantages are people have seen who have used both 32/64bit linux. Speed? Smoothness? And also what are major disadvantages such as compatibility, configuration, etc.
