Software :: Can't Restart Kubuntu 8.04

Feb 21, 2009

Due to a configuration problem with the NVIDIA video card I deleted the file xorg.conf but from that moment on the only thing I can see is the login dialog box (name and password) that continuously reappears after any login attempt of mine (the password, however is recognized). I thought it was a KDE problem, so, in recovery mode I even tried to solve it by typing this shell command: sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart but unsuccessfully as everything remains as before.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot In Kubuntu After Restart The Pc

Oct 2, 2010

I have a new Dell 3500 laptop with a dualboot Windows 7 and Kubuntu 10.04. Directly after installing Kubuntu the pc was able to restart without problems. However having shutdown the pc once and restart again it fails to boot in Kubuntu.

No error messages are shown, nothing at all. What happens after selecting Kubuntu in OS's, for a couple of seconds a bar ("-") flashes upper left corner of the screen. After that the screen goes entirely black (as if it were shut off).

Ubuntu :: Installed Kubuntu Desktop And No Shutdown Or Restart In KDE

May 11, 2010

I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

Ubuntu Installation :: System Automatically Tried To Restart But On The Restart Got The 'terminal' View

Apr 30, 2011

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.

My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.

I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

"name@name-desktop:...$ "

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

Ubuntu :: Point To Kubuntu CD Instead Of Kubuntu Repository?

Mar 7, 2011

I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.

I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

Ubuntu :: How To Restart Network Adapter (not Service) Without Restart?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Debian Multimedia :: GDM Goes To Tty On Restart / Doesn't Restart

Apr 5, 2010

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

I am trying to use aMule, under 64 bit Kubuntu on KK. I get a low ID. When I try the connectivity test it fails. I am advised to: 'Make sure your firewall or router is allowing/forwarding this TCP service port..I don't have any doubts about my router, since eMule works fine under Windows on my network. So I am persuaded to examine the firewall on my KK installation - except that I cannnot find it.

In addition, how do I find the definition for my network card to be sure it is set to the correct IP address to match my router settings?

Ubuntu :: How To Upgrade The Kubuntu

I changed from Ubuntu to Kubuntu by installing KDE. I'm not sure if I have Ubuntu or Kubuntu now because at login I can choose between both desktops.Anyway, when using Gnome, about once a week it asked for upgrades, and then did this all in the background.

Now with KDE, this doesn't work anymore. At some point there came a screen that was similar to that of Gnome, except if I pressed ok to update and entered my password, it crashed and brought up the KDE crash handler.

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu And Win 7 Run Without A Bootloader?

Apr 29, 2011

Kubuntu and win 7 have their own separate hard drives. The problem showed up when I installed the new Kubuntu 11.04 (disconnected win7 hard drive in hope that it wouldn't affect the win boot loader) . As of now, it's just an annoyance since I can just hit f12 quickly during startup and decide which one I want to boot. I tried doing what other tutorial suggest, but I am a little nervous about their instruction in reference to what number I should jot down since situation may be a little different.

Basically, I want Grub or whatever good working boot-loader to be installed (I heard a rumor that a click-able one was in the making) on my Kubuntu hard drive, and avoid affecting my win 7 hard drive (they research now with the updates to make sure you got their boot-loader running *sigh).

Here is some data I collected from partition editor, hopefully this will assist somebody in understanding my problem better:

ATA ST (where linux is installed)
/dev/sda1; type: ext4; size: 461.76 GiB; Used: 20.77 GiB
/dev/sda2 type: extended; size: 4.00 GIB; Used: 4.00 GiB
/dev/s...; type: linuxswap; size: 4.00GiB; Used: ---;
ATA WDC (Win 7 is installed)
/dev/sdb1; type: ntfs; size: 596.17 GiB; Used: 116.61 GiB

Installation :: Kubuntu 8.10 Keeps Restarting

Nov 30, 2008

I recently did an install from CD of Kubuntu 8.10 on a system. When I first went to boot, my BIOS screen kept saying invalid system disc. Now, I have another HD in there but I thought for sure at the time that I had changed the boot drive appropriately. So, I went ahead and re-installed grub using the instructions from this site. Went and switched the boot drive to the correct one (it wasn't correct after the re-install of Grub which is why it was probably set wrong before) and now the system just keeps rebooting. It gets past BIOS and then black screen and post beep. I don't see a grub screen or anything resembling linux. I'd rather not re-install the whole OS again.
