Is there a way with apcupsd to get current ups status? Like battery percentage left, that kind of thing? I've been struggling trying to get it to work with an old UPS, and after it just made the UPS shut off (causing the server to go down) I decided to just try with my UPS upstairs instead (just wired the management through my patch panel for now). I got it going to the point where it detects a power outage, but is there not a way I can query the status to get more info?
I have it setup to eventually shut down but it would be nice to get status such as how long I have before it does so, and so on. There's a GUI utility that I downloaded but it just says connection refused.
In Windows you can connect your PC to outlet via UPS and configure driver in the way it will power off the computer correctly or push it to hybernation when the UPS battery for example 10% or so. Can GNU/Linux work like this with APC UPSes? So I can leave my PC with some important data in RAM and be sure that in case of electricity problems I will find it in correct hybernation? Does GNU/Linux support this?
I attempted to install the power management package apcupsd-3.14.8-1.el4.i386.rpm on a vortexbox (Fedora 14) appliance and got the following: error: Failed dependencies: libcrypto.so.4 is needed by apcupsd-3.14.8-1.i386 libnetsnmp.so.5 is needed by apcupsd-3.14.8-1.i386 net-snmp is needed by apcupsd-3.14.8-1.i386 How can I obtain and install these items?
Installed gapcmon 3.14.6 on openSUSE 11.2 using YAST. Have a Back-UPS XS 1500 (model BX1500LCD) connected via USB cable. gapcmon cannot communicate with UPS. Get NIS network error. Had same problem previously and was able to get it working, but can't remember what I did to get it to work. I have included technical details from a hardware scan showing that the connection between my system and USP is working as well as the contents of apcupsd.conf and screenshots.
i've got my linux with new ups apc surt 1000 and it have cd install powerchute, i've googling a while and it took me to apcupsd, is it compatible if i use apcupsd with APC SURT 1000 machine using serial line, and which one is more eat resource cpu between apcupsd and powerchute ?.
And this is the first time i use software like this and it is really true that if i use one of this software it can automatically turn of the cpu machine if ups machine on battery position and it can turn off the ups machine too after cpu machine is turn off first ?
Can I use apcupsd to monitor my smart-ups 2200 without it being connected to a server? I have set the TCP info on the APC and can telnet into it, but I'm kinda confused by what I've been reading in the apcupsd documentation.
If someone can tell me about there experience doing this and best practice that would be awesome.
I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).
Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).
After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?
In the Release Notes for Jessie, it is stated that webkit browsers do not receive security updates in a timely manner and so are not secure. It is recommended that one uses a gecko-based browser or Chromium for 'general' web browsing. Yet I haven't read anything about this elsewhere and I'm guessing a lot of people don't read the Release Notes, so perhaps it's only something I would only need to worry about if I worked for MI6?
Anyway, Chromium and Iceweasel are becoming far too sluggish for my computer. I would want to experiment with Konqueror, Midori, Epiphany and Opera, but don't want to do anything insecure. I'm of the understanding that without Mandatory Access Control, exploits in applications often allow attackers to access all of the user's files; I want to avoid that.
On the Opera page on Debian Wiki, it says 'Opera is a non-free (proprietary) software. It isn't supported by Debian. It's probably wiser to use a supported web browser ! '.
I installed fedroa 13 from a USB device to a brand new hard disk. After firsdt reboot, I passed trough the 4 steps: - License Agreement - System User - Date and Time - Hardware Profile the next reboot ended up with no launcher, no status bar, just clean desktop with 3 icons:Trash, the user's home and "Computer".I launched /usr/bin/gnome-terminal to try and upgrade to fedora 14, maybe it will resolve this situation.but it will might take some time.
While copying big folders in ubuntu using cp command,it takes a long time to copy in which no status comes on the console while copying. Is there any way to see the status of copying big file while the system is copying the files?

The text entry box that you can normally type a message into when you click on your name in the top right of the screen is missing. It's there on my laptop, and I set up a couple of broadcast accounts and then noticed it was missing on my desktop. I've uninstalled and reinstalled gwibber and it's still not there.
I booted up my laptop and the boot sequence got stuck at the boot splash screen (plymouth). I did an esc and I saw a failure message, the error I remember in my panic mode is: fsck terminated with status 8
I rebooted, got the same message. Rebooted again and this time, to my relief, it worked.
1) What happened, should I be concerned? Not sure why it worked after 2 reboots.
2) Is there a possibility this could happen again?
3) Are there any boot log files I could look at?
4) Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or a check of some sort?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. No dual boot. The disk is partitioned and I've got my /home folder on the other partition for situations like this.
I have a new install of Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit) installed and I am noticing that on the top right corner where it shows the connection status, specifically the wired connection, it has a white box around it. I have tried changing the themes to something different but it is showing this on all the default themes I choose from. (Specifically Ambiance and New Wave). I am attaching a screen shot to show exactly what I am talking about. I am also using the Nvidia drivers (recommended version).
My desktop using Ubuntu 10.4 (I recently ungraded from 9.04) crashed. That is Ubuntu is not loading. Maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will termainae this shell and re-try. roo@computername-desktop:"# _ How to revive Ubuntu?
I'm using Xubuntu and have lost my bottom status bar so that if I minimize programs they vanish from the screen and I have no idea if they are running or not and cannot recover them, I cannot use web mail notifier either as I cannot get to the icon which is normally at the bottom of the screen. I suspect one of my kids have altered settings some where.
boot fails with the following message:/etc/default/locale: 5: d_fmt: not found init: mountall main process (234) terminated with status 127
if I boot to Recovery, is there any way to edit this locale file or to delete it and replace it with a default one? How can I edit the Locale file to fix this problem without being able to boot?
I am currently running this off my laptop with the issue using a bootable flash version of 11.04. hwclock keeps terminating with status 127 on boot everytime tried anything i could come across, and still nothing checked the hard drive as well.

We have a Dell Poweredge 1750 server with 2 harddrives in RAID 1 running Debian Etch. Yesterday one of the hardrives stopped working but no error message appeared in syslog. The only indication was the amber LED diode. Is there a software way how to check that both disks are OK?
I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04LTS on a Dell Optiplex GX150, from 8.04LTS. The 8.04 has worked flawlessly on this PC, which is a secondary one. This machine is not dual boot, and the 10.04 was installed, not updated, so the HDD (300GB) was repartitioned and reformatted. 10.04 has all updates to 23Aug2010 installed. 10.04 has problems, at boot 2 msgs are displayed: error:no suitable mode found error:unknown command "terminal" At end of boot, and after entry of password the main GNOME screen is presented but without the menu bar at the top and without the status bar at the bottom. Alt-F1 will give Applications/Places/System at top left but of course no status bar to retrieve minimised apps. If restart or closedown is used a dim purple screen is presented and the caps and scroll lock keys flash and the machine freezes. The hard stop causes the "Shut Down, Restart, Suspend" etc to be presented and Shut Down will do just that.
