I have a problem with my ubuntu linux, the first thing I accidentally delete a status bar on linux. but after that I ca to restore it. the status bar is there again, but strangely , now status bar can not keep a WORKSPACE. if meminimaize window, the window will disappear by itself and did not return. anyone can help to solve it?
View 1 RepliesI'm using Xubuntu and have lost my bottom status bar so that if I minimize programs they vanish from the screen and I have no idea if they are running or not and cannot recover them, I cannot use web mail notifier either as I cannot get to the icon which is normally at the bottom of the screen. I suspect one of my kids have altered settings some where.

I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).
Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).
After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?
I need to know where the /usr/bin/X11 link goes to. If someone can post the ls of that directory that would be just as helpful. It is currently referring to /usr/bin/ which means its a recursive link and I do not think that is correct. A speedy response would be nice
I wish to have this resolved before I need to reboot.
I was in the wrong directory when I did a chmod +x *.bin, so now all of my commands in the terminal come back with the error "Cannot execute binary file." From ls, to cd .. I get this error. I seem to be able to do things with sudo, but does anyone know how to fix all of my permissions so that basic terminal commands come back?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've a little experience about Ubuntu. I'm using Ubuntu with Windows 7 as dual boot for 1 year. Three days ago I decided to upgrade my Ubuntu version to 10.10. I've created a live version of installer on my USB stick and I've successfully logged into live version.After some time I clicked install and accidentally I gave a command like install Ubuntu to all hard drive. Installer have given error and denied to continue but it has removed the partitioning records from hard drive. So as you guessed everything within hard drive have got unreadable everything until here is the story part. I've written in order to inform the reader.
After a few hours of searching around, I've discovered a miracle called Testdisk. Following the instructions carefully I've managed to return partitions except the System Allocated space of Windows 7 which exists on the starting 100MB of memory. But I'm able to see my files within C: drive of Windows 7Then my problem has became logging into Windows. Somehow I skip following the instructions on the website of Testdisk and I've used the command called 'Write TestDisk MBR code to first sector' so at that moment my first sector was the C: drive of Windows 7 where OS was originally installed and where my files are kept. So I cannot see the files within C: because the starting bytes set to something else and I want to undo what I've done so far.
Just like the title said, I was fooling around with different workspaces - seeing if I could close a program in one workspace while working in another - and I seem to have either deleted or hidden all of my workspaces!I've already tried the gconf commands and they don't seem to work at all.I'm running 11.04.TYOK... a quick update. I can get to my other workspaces using ctr+alt+ right arrow, so the workspaces are still there, I've just hidden or removed the switcher applet!

I recently started messing with the desktop environment, going from GNOME to Ubuntu Studio to Netbook Remix... and then I decided to remove the Netbook look and go back to Studio, by removing it through the Software Manager. But this seemed to remove any and all desktop environments present. So now I just have the xterm. This was not part of the plan. I can get the Software Manager up and running, but I cannot get packages. I could try to provide the exact error message I get when I try, though I'm not entirely sure how to bring it to you. Is there a way I can get a desktop environment back after such a screw-up?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did something stupid and i don't know what i did or how to fix it. For some reason every time i click within the contents (not the title bar) of a window (for example; firefox, transmission, nautilus, terminal, basically any running application) and drag the mouse while holding the left mouse button down the entire window moves instead of the expected behavior (selecting text in firefox, moving a file in nautilus, selecting a torrent in transmission, clicking checkbox in system preferences, etc).
This is the expected behavior you would get from clicking on the title bar but not the contents of the window. Right before this happened, i had installed Xephyr and Sugar emulator (for XO OLPC). In the title bar of the Sugar emulator it said to push "ctrl + shift" in order to grab/release the mouse - I had issues getting the mouse successfully grabbed and released - this is around the time all of the problems started.
I have since removed Sugar and Xephyr yet this problem remains. It appears that i have somehow toggled a setting to make moving windows the default behavior when clicking.what i did to cause this to happen and what i can do to fix it? I don't want to have to reinstall. p.s. its not a stuck key - i have rebooted multiple times and the problem remains passed reboots.
p.p.s at the login screen the behavior is not present, you must hold ALT while clicking on the login window in order to exhibit the behavior. However. once Gnome is loaded you no longer need to hold ALT to window the move, it just defaults to that behavior.
i was trying to remove the flash plugin 32bit wrapper (don't remember the exact name of the package),using the command apt-get -y remove --purge and i saw somehow uninstalled a bunch of other programs like the gnome-network manager,emphaty...Now i rebooted and can't log on anymore .Is there a way to repair this,like running an upgrade from the livecd to restore the missing parts without wiping out my conf & other programs ? Using kubuntu 10.04, I accidentally disabled networkmanager on startup for one of the users of my system. This user now has to manually start networkmanager each time after logging in. How can I make kde run networkmanager automatically again?How this happened: when I started a parallel session as an other user, while already connected via networkmanager in my own profile, kde detected this and asked something along the lines of "There's already a networkmanager running, run networkmanager automatically in the future?" Since I was a little confused, I clicked "no", and that's how things are ever since. I thought there would be some system setting that would allow me to restore this setting, but I haven't found it yet...

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine, and it's working quite nicely.However, when booting windows, I have to go through a second, extra bootloader to get there.The first is less pretty, and has lots of options (grubv1.98+ 20100804- 5ubuntu3), the second is prettier and has just 2 boot options, Windows and Ubuntu. It's not crippling, but it is annoying to have to go through two, and I'd like to get rid of one.I think I know why this has happened; I installed Ubuntu from Windows using the wubi installation program, then decided that wasn't what I really wanted to do (I'd cleaned out an entire hdd partition specifically for Linux, so having it embedded in a Windows file seemed unnecessarily complex). I deleted the install manually - NOT with the windows uninstaller, stupidly, as I didn't realise that was possible. Presumably, this did not remove the bootloader. I then installed ubuntu from CD on my empty partition.I haven't tinkered with it too much, as it works currently and I don't want to risk make things worse by not knowing what I'm doing. Firstly, has this happened for the reason I think? Is there a way to delete just the second, presumably obsolete bootloader without damaging the first? I was considering doing a quick reinstall from Windows to allow me to do a proper uninstall, but I really don't want to risk ending up with 3 bootloaders!The obvious, long approach is to start fresh by letting Windows rewrite the MBR with a rescue disk, and then install ubuntu just once - is this the best option? Would this even work?

View 8 Replies View RelatedAlright, so, I booted using linux live, and was poking around Gparted, and was going to test some things on my extra hdd (80gb, IDE) -I thought that extra hard drive was selected, what I clicked Create Partition Table. Apparently, it was my primary hdd, (250gb Sata, Windows Vista x64) that was selected. I think I may have tried to cancel it after a few seconds, realizing what was happening, but yeah, it now shows the entire hdd as unallocated space. I immediately shut down the computer, pulled out linux live and tried to boot to windows, but I immediately got an error saying the disk couldn't boot, asking for a system disk.
There was a thread with a guy who had a similar thing happen to him, but the thread dropped off... [URL]

Opened testdisk for me, but now that testdisk is open, I'm not really sure what I need to do. I'm guessing that the boot sector on that hdd is gone. Are my files gone forever? There are some files that I don't have backed up on there, that I'm hoping are not gone. I would love it even more if I could somehow just repair that boot sector, and not have to reinstall everything on my machine.
