Software :: Ubuntu 10.04, No Menu Nor Status Bar
Aug 23, 2010
I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04LTS on a Dell Optiplex GX150, from 8.04LTS. The 8.04 has worked flawlessly on this PC, which is a secondary one. This machine is not dual boot, and the 10.04 was installed, not updated, so the HDD (300GB) was repartitioned and reformatted. 10.04 has all updates to 23Aug2010 installed.
10.04 has problems, at boot 2 msgs are displayed: error:no suitable mode found error:unknown command "terminal" At end of boot, and after entry of password the main GNOME screen is presented but without the menu bar at the top and without the status bar at the bottom. Alt-F1 will give Applications/Places/System at top left but of course no status bar to retrieve minimised apps. If restart or closedown is used a dim purple screen is presented and the caps and scroll lock keys flash and the machine freezes. The hard stop causes the "Shut Down, Restart, Suspend" etc to be presented and Shut Down will do just that.

Is there a keyboard shortcut, or can a keyboard shortcut be defined, to open the GNOME 3 "status menu" (the one in the upper right corner with your name on it that you use to log out, restart or shut down the machine)?
I want to be able to reboot or shut down the machine without using the mouse. In GNOME 2 I could do Alt+F1 and a short arrow key sequence, and now I want something similar.
Terminal is not an option - the GUI already has the necessary permissions and I want to take advantage of that, not sudo shutdown -h.

I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).
Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).

After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?

I installed the Global Menu Bar applet for my top panel, thus removing the menu bar from most, if not, all of my apps on Ubuntu. I removed the applet, mainly because of how God-Awful and inconvenient it was. Now, I don't have any menu bars on my apps!

I'm brand new to Linux and Ubunto 10.04.On the menu bar at the top of my desktop I seem to have attracted some kind of bug!The Log Out Symbol repeats itself across almost the entire menu bar and I cannot remove it. If I remove other buttons from the menu the space is immediately replaced by more Log Out Buttons. When I hover on the icon I get the message 'Log out of this session to log in as a different user' and when I right-cllick to click on 'Remove from Panel' or 'Move' nothing happens. It is not possible to right-click on another part of the menu bar to change the Menu Properties.

I'm looking for a way to hide the icons in the Gnome menu bar.
The only thing i've found is the gconf-editor and unchecking /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons, but that only affects the System menu and not Applications and Places...
Example:
Must be like:
How to disable them ?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04LTS with Gnome 2.30

9.10 has no menu.lst file and hitting ESC to does not bring up the grub menu. How can we set bootup options or boot an alternate kernel? I would really like to set the resolution at boot time so that my console (Ctrl-Alt-F5, for example) has 80 columns instead of 40. (What a stupid default, gigantic Commodore-64-like text!) It would also be nice if the Login screen could be set to the resolution that I want.
In previous releases, there were ways to do this. In 9.10, I haven't been able to figure out how.
Is there a document explaining all of the radical changes?

Netbeans menu doesn't go on global menu. It stays in application. Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

In Windows Explorer, if a file is focused, press Menu Key on keyboard, context menu will show on top of the file. But in Nautilus, the same action shows context menu where the mouse cursor is. That's a bit annoying. Is there anyway to make it work like Windows?
