Software :: X-based Alternative To Partclone?
Aug 31, 2010
Partclone works fine, but since it's written in Curses, it's unrealistic to expect non-techies to use it to clone a hard-drive.
I was wondering if there is an X-based alternative, preferably in GTK+.

I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?

I've got some source code that loads and plays WAV files through the OSS drivers (and USB audio). The code works even under 2.6.34. Is there any benefit to rewriting the code using the ALSA system?

I am working on a set up, and I like to be able to toggle compiz on and off, or toggle dualscreen on and off. The thing is, I also have conky on my desktop as well as a terminal window embedded in my desktop (that requires compiz). So, when I turn comiz off, or resize my desktop, I want to be able to reposition conky/embedded-terminal and the terminals position is relative to my conky position and the size of my virtual desktop.
I can do this all fine, except that to reposition the terminal I need to kill it then reopen it. But if I kill gnome-terminal it kills ALL gnome-terminals instead of just my embedded one. How can I specifically close my embedded one and leave any others untouched? Lets say that the title of my embedded terminal is "trans777"Also, the trans777 titled gnome-terminal will be killed when compiz is not running.

Can someone indicate me a good software for these purposes, preferably an official Debian package?

I use dual monitors and it's extremely important to me to arrange them and keep 'em reliable. So I have been looking for an alternative for DisplayFusion on ubuntu since 1 year but I couldn't find any good result, if you know any sort of good drivers or programs to arrange the desktop and scale backgrounds perfectly.

I'm fairly new to the Ubuntu community, having dl'ed Ubuntu 11.04 little more than a couple of weeks ago, deleting my Windows completely. I'm sure this has been said before, but I'm trying to find a good VoIP I can use to call my Windows using girlfriend who is currently very far away. Skype for Linux just crashes for me after a minute or two, Ekiga only allows me to make a call to any contact ONCE, then I can never do it again, tried Faceflow and couldn't even see or hear her. I'm running out of options, it seems. Will I really have to go back to windows just to see her?

I know that SSHFS is the way to mount the file and directory on remote server. It has many advantages such as security, convenience, fast and so on. I wonder if there is disadvantage of SSHFS and the alternative to it? I am looking forward to your reply.

Over the past few months Nomachine's NX Server has deteriorated to the point where it's unusable, as detailed in this thread for one machine. On my other machine it works, but I cannot do apt-get dist-upgrades as it spews forth messages like, "insserv: Starting nxsensor depends on stop-bootlogd and therefore on system facility `$all' which can not be true!". So I give up on them.

I want to create some scheduled jobs in a CentOS server. These jobs are simple and repeatable, but the scheduling is complicated. I want a series of jobs to start every day but Monday, and not on the last day of the month. These jobs depend on software execution outside the server ( a Windows application) so if the Windows app fails, I need to temporarily suspend the cron jobs so I can straighten out the Windows server.
I've looked over some cron alternatives and nothing seems suitable. Am I stuck with cron and the limitations of crontab, or are there some programmatic things I can do in cron that I don't know about?

I am wondering if there's a better alternative than jigdo. I was trying to help out and choose what is recommended but this jigdo crap is ridiculous. Didn't work for me and the primitive bad design of it is a waste of time.
Maybe Debian should consider joining today's technology. There are supposed to be hybrid isos you can download and even Ubuntu is finally joining the camps doing that. But, there's nothing on Debian web pages mentioning 'hybrid isos.' Who uses jigdo anyway? There's no way of entering the url or any instructions that make it intuitive. Get rid of the jigdo and do something different....

SPICE has been getting there for a while now and seems to be a very capable mechanism for running remote desktops. (You see where I'm going?) Virtual desktops have a good chance of becoming all the rage if SPICE gets a low enough latency implementation. But what about applying that low latency implementation to running over a physical layer? Who says the host machine has to be a virtual box? (See where I'm going now?) Does anyone know if I can start using SPICE as an alternative to NX for example?
